Foreword
This standard is identical to ISO 5508. 1990 Animal and vegetable fats and oils —
Analysis by gas chromatography of methyl esters of fatty acids (English Edition).
In order for ease of use, the following editorial changes have been made in this
standard to ISO 5509. 2000.
— Delete “Foreword” of the international standard;
— Change “this international standard” to “this standard”;
— Replace the comma “,” that is used as decimal point to “.”
This standard is the revision of GB/T 17377-1998 Animal and vegetable fats and
oils--Analysis by gas chromatography of methyl esters of fatty acids.
Main differences between this standard and GB/T 17377-1998 are as follows.
— Delete “ISO Foreword” in previous version;
— Change “Annex A” in previous version to “5.1.2” in this standard.
This standard shall replace GB/T 17377-1998 from the implementation date.

Animal and vegetable fats and oils —
Analysis by gas chromatography of
methyl esters of fatty acids
1 Scope
This standard gives general guidance for the application of gas chromatography, using
packed or capillary columns, to determine the qualitative and quantitative composition of a
mixture of fatty acid methyl esters obtained in accordance with the method specified in
GB/T 17376.
The method is not applicable to polymerized fatty acids.
2 Normative references
The articles contained in the following documents have become part of this standard when
they are quoted herein. For the dated documents so quoted, all the modifications
(excluding corrections) or revisions made thereafter shall not be applicable to this
standard. For the undated documents so quoted, the latest editions shall be applicable to
this standard.
GB/T17376 Animal and vegetable fats and oils — Preparation of methyl esters of
fatty acids (ISO 5509.2000, IDT)
3 Reagents
3.1 Carrier gas
Inert gas (nitrogen, helium, argon, hydrogen, etc.), thoroughly dried and with an oxygen
content of less than 10 mg/kg.
NOTE 1 Hydrogen, which is used as a carrier gas only with capillary columns, can double the speed of
analysis but is hazardous. Safety devices are available.
3.2 Auxiliary gases
3.2.1 Hydrogen (purity ≥ 99.9 %), free from organic impurities.
3.2.2 Air or oxygen, free from organic impurities.
The test report shall include all information necessary for the complete identification of the
sample.
