Foreword
This document is in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Guidelines for standardization work Part 1.Structure and drafting rules for standardization documents"

This document is Part 1 of GB 5768 Road Traffic Signs and Markings. GB 5768 has been published in the following parts.
--- Part 1.General;
--- Part 2.Road traffic signs;
--- Part 3.Road traffic markings;
--- Part 4.Working area;
--- Part 5.Speed limit;
--- Part 6.Railway crossings;
--- Part 7.Non-motor vehicles and pedestrians;
--- Part 8.School areas.
This document replaces GB 5768.1-2009 "Road Traffic Signs and Markings Part 1.General Principles" and is consistent with GB 5768.1-2009.
In addition to structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows.
a) The scope of application has been changed (see Chapter 1, Chapter 1 of the.2009 edition);
b) The general principles of road traffic signs and markings have been changed (see Chapter 4, 3.1 of the.2009 edition);
c) Deleted the requirements for the color indicators of road traffic signs and road markings (see 4.1.3 of the.2009 edition);
d) Deleted the requirements for maintenance of road traffic signs and road markings (see 4.2.1 of the.2009 edition);
e) The requirement that the finished products and materials of road traffic signs and road markings must be tested and qualified by a nationally recognized testing agency before they can be used has been deleted.
See 4.2.3 of the.2009 edition;
f) Added temporary signs and markings, signs and markings on the road, variable information signs and static traffic signs to display information.
Requirements when information is inconsistent (see 5.5);
g) Added the requirement for replacement during the service life (see 5.7);
h) The requirement of “application of road traffic signs and markings other than those specified in GB 5768” has been deleted (see Appendix A of the.2009 edition);
i) The name, scope of application and some graphics of "Basic Graphics of Road Traffic Signs and Markings" have been changed (see Appendix A,.2009 Edition).

Introduction
Road traffic signs and markings are used to guide road users to use the road in an orderly manner, to ensure road traffic safety and to improve road operation efficiency.
GB 5768 "Road Traffic Signs and Markings" is a basic and universal standard guiding the use of road traffic signs and markings in my country.

4 General Principles
Road traffic signs and markings shall comply with the following principles.

---Convey clear and concise meaning;

5 General requirements
5.1 The color, shape, line, character, figure and size of road traffic signs and markings shall comply with GB 5768.2 and GB 5768.3.

5.3 The information conveyed by road traffic signs and road markings should be consistent in meaning, complementary to each other, and should not cause ambiguity.
5.4 When there is a discrepancy between the meanings of road traffic signs and road markings, the information conveyed by the traffic signs shall prevail.
5.5 When temporary signs and markings are inconsistent with those on the road, the contents of the temporary signs and markings shall prevail.
