Road traffic signs and markings - Part 2: Road traffic signs
1 Scope
This document specifies the requirements for the classification, color, shape, character,
size, patterns, setting, use, maintenance, production of road traffic signs.
This document applies to all kinds of road traffic signs on roads, urban roads, places
under the jurisdiction of the organization but allowing social motor vehicles to pass,
including squares, public parking lots and other places used for public passage.
2 Normative references
The contents of the following documents constitute essential provisions of this
document through normative references in the text. Among them, for dated references,
only the version corresponding to the date applies to this document; for undated
references, the latest version (including all amendments) is applicable to this document.

3 Terms and definitions
There are no terms and definitions, that need to be defined, in this document.
4 General
4.1 Basic requirements
4.1.1 Road traffic signs convey traffic control and guidance information to road users,
through colors, shapes, characters, patterns, etc.
4.1.2 Road traffic signs shall comply with the following principles:
a) Meet the needs of road users;
b) Cause the attention of road users;
c) Convey clear, concise meaning;
d) Obtain road user's compliance;
e) Provide adequate time for a reasonable response by road users.
4.1.3 The phenomenon of insufficient or overloaded information shall be prevented.
4.1.4 Important information may be reasonably repeated.
4.1.5 When the signs and markings are used together, they shall have the same meaning,
complement each other; they shall not cause ambiguity; they shall be coordinated with
other facilities; they shall not contradict the signal lights.
Note: The road traffic markings, in the example in this document, are for illustration only.
4.2 Classification
4.2.1 The road traffic signs are divided into primary signs and auxiliary signs, according
to their functions:
a) The primary sign consists of:
1) Prohibition signs: The signs prohibiting or restricting the traffic behavior of
road users;
2) Indication signs: The signs indicating that road users shall follow;
3) Warning signs: The signs warning road users to pay attention to roads and
traffic;
4) Guide signs: The signs that convey road direction, location, distance
information;
5) Signs of tourist attractions: The signs that provide directions and distances of
tourist attractions;
6) Notification signs: The signs that inform off-street facilities, safe driving
information and other information.
b) Auxiliary signs are signs, which are located below the primary signs, to provide
auxiliary explanations.
4.2.2 Road traffic signs are divided into roadside signs and overhead signs, according
to their display positions.
4.2.3 Road traffic signs are divided into static signs and variable information signs,
according to the display method of layout content.
4.2.4 Road traffic signs are divided into three types: retroreflective signs, illuminated
signs, luminous signs, according to their optical characteristics, among which the
illuminated signs are further divided into internally illuminated signs and externally
illuminated signs, according to the installation position of the light source.
4.2.5 The road traffic signs are divided into permanent signs and temporary signs,
according to the setting time limit. Road traffic signs, which are used in areas where
road conditions have changed, due to construction work or traffic accident management,
are temporary signs.
4.2.6 Road traffic signs are divided into compulsory signs and non-compulsory signs,
according to the mandatory degree of the information conveyed by the signs.
Prohibition signs and indication signs are signs that road users must follow; other signs
are only informational, such as guide signs, tourist attraction signs.
The stop-to-give-way signs and the deceleration-to-give-way signs, in the prohibition
signs, shall not be superimposed. Other prohibition signs and indication signs should
not be superimposed. For other prohibition signs and indication signs, than the stop-to-
give-way signs and the deceleration-to-give-way signs, which are superimposed on
white frameless bottom plate, they are mandatory signs.
For the stop-to-give-way signs and the deceleration-to-give-way signs, which are
superimposed on other signs, to provide the information only related to prohibition,
restriction, compliance, as a supplementary description or prediction, they are non-
mandatory signs.
4.3 Color
4.3.1 The basic meanings of the colors of traffic signs are as shown in Table 1.

4.6.8 The height of the guide signs, which are set in the tunnel, shall be selected,
according to the design speed or speed limit. When the headroom is limited, the
information can be reduced, OR the content of a piece of sign can be reasonably divided
and set, after demonstration.
4.7 Patterns
The use of graphic signs, other than those specified in this document, is a trial sign,
which shall be implemented, in accordance with the procedures specified in GB 5768.1;
meanwhile auxiliary signs shall be added, to explain the meaning.
4.8 Settings
4.8.1 Road traffic signs should be set on the right side of the road in the direction of
vehicle travel, OR on the left side of the road in the direction of vehicle travel, OR on
both sides at the same time, OR above the road, according to specific conditions.
4.8.2 To ensure visibility, where more than two signs need to be set at the same location,
they should be installed on one support structure, BUT it shall not exceed 4 at most.
4.8.3 In principle, it shall avoid the juxtaposition of different types of primary signs,
such as prohibition signs and guide signs.
4.8.4 The stop-to-give-way signs, the deceleration-to-give-way signs, the speed limit
release signs, the overtaking prohibition signs, the overtaking prohibition release signs,
the priority over oncoming vehicle signs, the give way to oncoming vehicle signs should
be set up separately. If it cannot be set independently, due to restrictions of conditions,
there shall not be more than two signs on a support structure; the auxiliary signs are not
counted.
4.8.5 Warning signs shall not be set on a support structure, together with stop-to-give-
way signs and deceleration-to-give-way signs. Warning signs should not be set up too
much. When more than two warning signs need to be set, at the same location, in
principle, only the most needed one is set.
4.8.6 For the signs juxtaposed on a support structure, they shall be installed from top to
bottom and from left to right, in the order of prohibition signs, indication signs, warning
signs.
4.8.7 Prohibition signs and indication signs shall be placed at the beginning of
prohibition, restriction or compliance. At appropriate positions in front of the
intersection of the road segment, where some prohibition sign starts, it should set
corresponding guide signs, so that the prohibited and restricted vehicles can take action

2) Ensure that the illumination of the sign board is uniform; there is a visual
recognition distance of more than 150 m, at night;
3) The metal components shall be qualified for anti-corrosion treatment, rain-
proof and dust-proof; the electrical components are durable and reliable, the
maintenance is convenient.
c) For external lighting, the light source is installed at the lower front of the outside
of the sign, OR at other appropriate positions, to illuminate the sign surface. The
requirements are as follows:
1) The color rendering index (Ra) of the external lighting source shall not be lower
than 80; the light source shall be specially designed; the lighting fixture and
its shadow shall not affect the reading of the sign;
2) The illuminance of the light source, on the sign surface, shall be uniform; the
ratio of the maximum illuminance to the minimum illuminance shall be less
than 4; the visual distance shall be more than 150 m, at night;
3) The external lighting source shall not cause glare;
4) The metal components, which support the lighting fixtures, shall be qualified
for anti-corrosion treatment; the electrical components are durable and reliable,
the maintenance is convenient.
4.8.17 The luminous signs work normally and stably. It meets the following
requirements:
a) Devices or materials, such as high-brightness light-emitting diodes (LEDs), can
be used for the luminous parts; the retro-reflective materials shall be used for the
non-luminous parts;
b) It has a visual recognition distance of more than 150 m, at night;
c) If flashing, all luminous units shall be synchronized; the flashing frequency should
be 50 times/min ~ 60 times/min.
4.9 Use and maintenance
4.9.1 From the date of implementation of this document, all newly installed (modified)
traffic signs shall be implemented, in accordance with the provisions of this document;
the traffic signs, that have been set up in accordance with the previous edition of this
document, shall be gradually replaced, within their service life.
4.9.2 The setting (adjustment) of the traffic signs, for the newly constructed (modified
or expanded) roads, shall be completed before the newly constructed (modified or
expanded) roads are completed and opened to traffic; the signs related to the newly
constructed (modified or expanded) roads, in the road network, shall also be adjust
synchronously and set completely; the signs, that cannot be used any more, shall be
removed.
4.9.3 When the road traffic conditions change, the setting of relevant signs shall be
adjusted.
4.9.4 The road number signs and road name signs shall be used as far as possible, to
enable road users to know their route and location.
4.9.5 The signs shall be cleaned and maintained regularly, to ensure visibility. Signs
shall also avoid being blocked by trees; the visual recognition of signs shall not be
influenced by road lighting.
4.9.6 The shape and color of the sign shall comply with the provisions of this document,
during its service period.
4.9.7 The back of the sign board shall not be used for publicity or advertisement; it shall
be gray, black or metallic primary color; meanwhile avoid glare.
4.9.8 When the sign is installed, the relevant information of sign management can be
pasted on the back of the sign board OR on the column. The information, which is
pasted on the back, shall not be colored or reflective; it can be the same color as the
back of the sign board. If it is text, the height of the characters shall be so small, that it
cannot be seen by the driver.
4.9.9 Unless otherwise specified, signs can be used alone OR in conjunction with
markings. See Appendix D, for recommendations on the coordination of traffic signs
and markings.
4.10 Fabrication
4.10.1 The patterns of road traffic signs shall be scaled up, according to the provisions
of this document. See Appendix E, for an example of the fabrication of pattern of road
traffic signs.
4.10.2 Combined with the layout of text or patterns, the sign board, which is installed
on the support structure, can leave a gap of not more than 10 cm, as shown in Figure 9.
However, it shall be noted that the gap should not be left on the text, pattern, etc. It shall
avoid the visual recognition from being influenced by the backlight environment. Other
measures, that are convenient for transportation and installation BUT do not affect the
visual recognition of the signs, may also be adopted.

Part 2: Road traffic signs
1 Scope
This Part of GB 5768 specifies the general requirements for the classification,
color, shape, characters, dimensions, graphics, etc. of road traffic signs, as well
as the requirements for design, manufacture, installation, construction.
This Part is applicable to the production, detection and setting of traffic signs on
various roads such as roads, urban roads and places where social vehicles are
allowed to pass through under the jurisdiction of the organization, plazas, public
parking lots, and other places for public access. Traffic signs installed in other
places where motor vehicles pass, parking lots, etc., may make reference to
this Part.
2 Normative references
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Part
through reference in this Part of GB 5768. For the dated references, the
subsequent amendments (excluding corrections) or revisions do not apply to
this Part; however, parties who reach an agreement based on this Part are
encouraged to study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable.
For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document applies.

3 Basic requirements
3.1 Functions
Road traffic signs are facilities used to manage traffic by transmitting
information to road users in terms of color, shape, characters, graphics, and the
attention to the road traffic;
2) Prohibition signs: Signs to prohibit or restrict the traffic behavior of
vehicles and pedestrians;
3) Indication signs: Signs indicating that vehicles and pedestrians shall
follow;
4) Directional signs: Signs that convey the road direction, location,
distance information;
5) Tourist attraction sign: Signs indicating the direction and distance of the
tourist attraction;
6) Work zone sign: Signs indicating the passage of the road work zone;
7) Notice sign: Signs indicating off-road facilities, safe driving information,
other information.
b) Supplementary signs: Signs provided below the main sign to assist in the
explanation.
3.3.2 Traffic signs are classified, according to the display position, into two types:
roadside and above lane. The corresponding supporting structure is column
type, roadside attachment type, cantilever type, gantry type, attachment type
above lane.
3.3.3 Traffic signs are classified, according to the optical characteristics, into
three categories: retroreflective, illuminating and luminous. The illuminating
type is further divided into internal lighting type and external lighting type.
3.3.4 Traffic signs are classified, according to the display of the content of the
layout, into static signs and variable information signs.
3.3.5 Traffic signs are classified, according to the set time efficiency, into
permanent signs and temporary signs.
3.3.6 The traffic signs are classified, according to the mandatory degree of the
information transmitted, into the mandatory signs and the non-mandatory signs.
The prohibition signs and indication signs are signs that must be followed by
the road users. Other signs only provide information, such as directional signs,
tourist attraction signs. When the prohibition signs and indication signs are used
on the frameless white baseplate, they must be followed. The signs to stop to
give-way and the signs to decelerate to give-way shall not be used on the
frameless white baseplate. The prohibition and indication signs which are used
on the directional signs only provide relevant prohibition, limit, followed
information, it can only be used as supplementary explanation or forecasting,
meanwhile it shall provide corresponding prohibition and indication signs at the

3.7.4 The letter identifier and number in the road number identification are equal
in height. The number and letter in the exit number sign are not equal in height,
the height shall be selected according to the design speed from the Table 4.
The specific requirements for the height of letter identifier and number of the
number identification of the national highway are in accordance with Appendix
B. For the road number or road name which is identified in the arrow bar of the
directional sign of general road, the height may be appropriately reduced, which
generally takes 0.5 ~ 0.7 times the value as specified in Table 2, but the height
of the character of the road number or the road name shall not be less than 20
cm, the height of English letters and Arabic numerals shall not be less than 15
cm. The character height of the directional sign as set in the directional sign
layout may be appropriately reduced, but shall not be less than 0.5 times the
value as specified in Table 2.

3.7.5 The spacing and line spacing of Chinese characters or other texts of the
directional signs shall meet the requirements of Table 5.

3.7.6 The character height of the text warning and prohibition signs shall be
determined in accordance with Table 2. In special cases, the character height
of the text warning sign after argument may be appropriately reduced, but the
minimum shall not be less than 0.6 times the lower limit of the character height
in Table 2.

3.11 Retroreflective materials and lighting
3.11.1 General requirements
Unless otherwise specified, the sign shall be made of retroreflective materials
for the sign surface or be equipped with lighting facilities; or may be luminous
type according to the terrain and sunshine conditions. The color of the sign
during the day and night shall meet the requirements of GB 5768.1.
3.11.2 Retroreflective material
3.11.2.1 The retroreflective material used for the sign surface is mainly a
reflective film. The retroreflective properties of the reflective film shall comply
with the provisions of GB/T 18833.
3.11.2.2 The choice of retroreflective materials shall take into account the
following principles or factors:
a) The sign for the road which has high impact of background environment,
high driving speed, large traffic flow should use materials with good
retroreflective performance;
b) Gantry-type signs, cantilevered signs and attached signs above the lane
should use materials with better retroreflective performance than roadside
column signs and roadside attached signs;
c) For roads of grade 4 and below, roads with a small traffic flow may,
depending on the actual situation, select materials with lower
retroreflective performance than the signs for other roads.
3.11.3 Illumination
3.11.3.1 The illumination of traffic signs shall be white light source, which is
installed inside or above the sign plate structure or at other appropriate
locations.
3.11.3.2 Internal illumination is the illumination method for installing the light
source inside the sign plate structure. It is divided into single-sided display and
double-sided display. The requirements are as follows:
a) The internal illumination signs shall be designed according to the size of
the plate surface, the wind pressure, etc.;
b) Ensure that the sign surface is evenly illuminated and has a viewing
distance of 150 m or more at night;
c) The metal components shall be qualified by anti-corrosion treatment,
rainproof and dustproof, the electrical components are durable and
reliable, the maintenance is convenient.
3.11.3.3 External illumination is an illumination method of installing the light
source above the sign plate to illuminate the sign surface. The requirements
are as follows:
a) The color rendering index Ra of the selected external illumination source
shall not be lower than 80, the light source shall be specially designed, the
lighting fixture and its shadow shall not affect the reading of sign;
b) The illuminance of the light source on the sign surface shall be uniform,
the ratio of the maximum illuminance to the minimum illuminance shall be
less than 4, there shall be a viewing distance of more than 150 m at night;
c) External illumination sources shall not cause glare;
d) The components supporting the luminaire shall be qualified for rust
prevention, the illumination device shall be durable and reliable, with
excellent performance and convenient maintenance.
3.11.4 Active luminating
3.11.4.1 Active luminous parts of active luminous signs may use devices or
materials such as high-brightness light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The non-active
luminous sign's surface portion of the active luminous sign shall be made of a
retroreflective material, the requirements are the same as 3.11.2.
3.11.4.2 The active luminous sign shall ensure a viewing distance of more than
150 m at night.
3.11.4.3 The strobe of the active luminous sign shall be synchronized.
3.12 Supporting method
3.12.1 Column type
3.12.1.1 Column type generally has single-column type and multi-column type.
The inner edge of the column sign shall not intrude into the boundary of the
road building; it shall not be less than 25 cm from the outer edge of the lane or
sidewalk or the soil shoulder.
3.12.1.2 The height of the lower edge of the sign plate from the road pavement
is generally 150 cm ~ 250 cm. When setting it along an urban road with a large
proportion of small vehicles, the height of the lower edge from the ground can
be reduced according to the actual situation, but it should not be less than 120
3.13 Use and maintenance
3.13.1 The setting (adjustment) of road traffic signs shall be completed before
the completion of the newly-constructed, reconstructed, expanded roads. The
signs along the road in the road network which is related to this newly-
constructed, reconstructed, expanded roads shall also be adjusted
synchronously and improved.
3.13.2 When the road traffic conditions change, the setting of relevant signs
shall be adjusted in time.
3.13.3 It shall use the highway numbers and urban road name signs as much
as possible, to enable road users to understand their route and location.
3.13.4 The signs shall be cleaned and maintained frequently, to maintain
sufficient retroreflective performance to ensure visibility. In the use of the sign,
it shall also be avoided from shielding by trees or the recognition being impacted
by street lighting.
3.13.5 The shape and color of the sign shall comply with the provisions of this
Part during its service life.
3.14 Cooperation of signs and markings
3.14.1 Unless otherwise specified, the sign may be used alone or in conjunction
with the marking. The cooperation of the specific traffic signs and markings is
as shown in Appendix C.
3.14.2 When the sign and the marking are used together, they shall be
complementary or identical to each other and shall not be ambiguous.
3.15 Construction
3.15.1 The sign's baseplate and supporting structure should be made of light
materials and structures, using economical and applicable materials and
structures according to local conditions.
3.15.2 The sign's baseplate may be made of aluminum alloy plate, thin steel
plate, synthetic resin plate, wood plate and other plates. The relevant indicators
of the plate shall meet the requirements of GB/T 23827 and relevant national
standards. The backplate of the sign shall be beautiful and generous, the
aluminum alloy plate may use primary colors.
3.15.3 The four end corners of the rectangular sign plate shall be circular arc
end corners. The arc radius of the sign plate except the directional sign is 4 cm.
The arc radius of the directional sign plate is as shown in Figure 5.
3.15.4 The basic wind speed for the structural design of the sign shall use the
maximum average wind speed per 10 min which has a return period of 50 years
at a position 10 m above the local open flat ground, meanwhile it shall not be
less than 22 m/s.
3.15.5 The sign columns may be made of H-shaped steel, channel steel, steel
tube, wood, synthetic materials, reinforced concrete tubes. The column for sign
may also use steel trusses. The cross-sectional size, connection method,
foundation size of various sign columns shall be calculated and determined
according to the wind, plate surface's size and supporting method of the
position of installation. For the sign column, it shall consider the connection to
the foundation.
3.15.6 The connection between the sign plate and the column shall select
various methods based on the size of the plate surface and the connection
method. When designing the connecting components, it shall ensure that the
installation is convenient, the connection is firm, the plate surface is flat.
3.15.7 The depth of burying of various sign columns shall be determined by
calculation according to the magnitude of the external force of the plate surface
and the bearing capacity of the foundation.
3.16 Fabrication of signs
3.16.1 The graphics of traffic signs shall be scaled up according to the
provisions of this Part and shall not be modified arbitrarily.
3.16.2 The fabrication and technical requirements of the sign plate shall comply
with the relevant provisions of GB/T 23827.
3.16.3 The legend for the fabrication of traffic signs is as shown in Appendix D.
3.17 Variable information sign
3.17.1 Use
The variable information sign is a sign that changes the display content due to
changes in traffic, roads, climate, and the like. Generally, it is used as a display
for speed control, lane control, road conditions, weather conditions and other
content. Variable information signs shall not display information that is not
related to traffic.
c) The starting road section of the tidal lane and the position of the variable
guiding lane before it enters an intersection;
d) Road sections with other special requirements.
4 Warning signs
4.1 General provisions
4.1.1 Warning signs are signs to warn vehicle drivers and pedestrians of danger
in front of them, the road users shall exercise caution.
4.1.2 The color of the warning sign is yellow background, black border, black
graphics. The graphics of the sign of "pay attention to signal lamp" are in four
colors: red, yellow, green, black. The "cross symbol" and "slash symbol" are red
graphics on white background.
4.1.3 The shape of the warning sign is an equilateral triangle or rectangle, with
the top corner of the triangle facing up.
4.1.4 The sizes of the warning signs are as specified in 3.8.1.
4.1.5 The pre-position distance of the warning sign is as specified in 3.10.1.
Appropriate adjustments shall be made to the actual conditions such as the
speed limit and running speed of the road.
4.1.6 When the warning signs other than those specified in this Part are
required, in addition to the recommended procedures in Appendix A of GB
5768.1-2009, it shall follow the general principles below:
a) Comply with the provisions of Chapter 3;
b) The content of the sign shall be graphical as much as possible and shall
be supplemented by text description;
c) The text warning signs are yellow background, black border, black text;
the shape is triangular or rectangular.
4.2 Intersection sign (Figure 11)
It is used to warn the driver of the vehicle to be cautious and slow to pay
attention to the vehicles in the lateral direction. It is set at the appropriate
location of the entrance road section of the level-crossing. The pattern of Figure
11 is selected as much as possible according to the actual road intersection.

5 Prohibition sign
5.1 General provisions
5.1.1 The prohibition sign indicates the meaning of prohibition, restriction,
corresponding release. The road users shall strictly abide by it.
5.1.2 The color of the prohibition sign, except for the individual signs, is white
background, red circle, red bar, black graphic. Graphic superimposed on bar.
5.1.3 The shape of the prohibition sign is round, but the “sign of stop to give-
way” is an octagonal shape, the “sign of deceleration to give-way” is an inverted
equilateral triangle with a vertices down.
5.1.4 The sizes of the prohibition sign are as specified in 3.8.2.
5.1.5 The prohibition sign is placed near the start of road section where the
prohibition, restriction and corresponding release start.
5.1.6 For road section where the vehicle is not allowed to pass if it does not
detour in advance, it shall set corresponding notice or detour sign in front of the
entrance of or at an appropriate position of the road section as prohibited, as
shown in Figure 70 Example.
5.1.7 Unless otherwise stated, it is not allowed to add graphics and text on the
prohibition sign.
5.1.8 When it is necessary to use the prohibition signs other than those
specified in this Part, in addition to the recommended procedures in Appendix
A of GB 5768.1-2009, it shall also follow the general principles below:
a) In accordance with the provisions of Chapter 3;
b) The content of the sign shall be graphical as much as possible and shall
be supplemented by text description;
c) When only text is used, the sign is white background, red circle, red bar,
black text, the shape is round or rectangular.
7 Directional signs
7.1 General requirements
7.1.1 The directional sign indicates the guidance of the road information,
providing the driver with information such as the road to the destination, the
towns along the route, important public facilities, service facilities, location,
distance, driving direction, etc.
7.1.2 The color of the directional signs, unless otherwise specified, are blue
background, white graphic, white border, blue lining for ordinary roads; green
background, white graphic, white border, green lining for highway and urban
expressway.
