General Rules for Testing
Methods of Coal Preparation
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the relevant terms and definitions, symbols, test coal sample,
dense preparation, result expression, test record, and test report of coal preparation.
This Standard is applicable to various coal preparation test method standards, norms,
reports, books, teaching materials and manuals.

3 Terms and Definitions
The following terms and definitions and those ones stipulated in GB/T 3715-2007 and
GB/T 7186-2008 are applicable to this document. For ease of use, some terms and
3.8 Dense
Liquid or solution with density greater than water, which is used for coal float-and-sink
analysis. The dense can be divided into organic dense, zinc chloride dense and
inorganic high-density dense.
[GB/T 7186-2008, definition 5.4.1]
3.9 Float-and-sink analysis; float-and-sink test
The coal samples are divided into different density grades with different dense.
[GB/T 7186-2008, definition 3.2.2]
3.10 Test coal’s degradation in water
The test adding water to the tumbling bucket containing coal and its associated
minerals, overturning for different time to measure the degree of its re-crushing,
which includes the test for degradation in water of coal in drum, and assessment of the
liability to breakdown in water of materials associated with coal seams.
3.11 The ratio of degradation in water
In the determination results of degradation in water, the ratio between the mass of
10µm fine clay and total mass of 0.5mm minus sieve.
3.12 Flotation test
The test aims to determine the floatability and flotation process of coal dust (slurry).
3.13 Batch-flotation test
Flotation test performed by the single-tank flotation machine.
[GB/T 7186-2008, definition 5.6.40]
3.14 Timed-release analysis
The unit flotation test with once coarse selection and multiple fine selection process.
[GB/T 7186-2008, definition 5.6.41]
3.15 Natural falling test
The discrete settling test against the coal slurry sample containing no flocculant or
coagulant.
3.16 Flocculant performance test
from the repeated determination in short term performed under the repeated conditions,
i.e. in the same laboratory, by the same operator, using the same instrument, against
the same specimen.
4 Coal Sample
4.1 Collection and preparation of coal sample
Perform as per GB/T 474, GB/T 475, GB/T 19494.1 and GB/T 19494.2.
4.2 Storage of coal sample
The water sample shall be packed in the sealed container; the sample for general test
shall be dried to the air-dry state, then sealed and stored in the sample bag with
waterproof function.
4.3 Analysis test sampling
The coal sample shall be mixed fully before sampling, the multi-point sampling method
shall be taken for the sampling process.
5 Dense Preparation
5.1 Commonly-used dense
The commonly-used laboratory dense is divided into organic and inorganic dense; the
inorganic dense is the high-density dense and zinc chloride solution; while the organic
dense is preparation solution between carbon tetrachloride and benzene, and the
preparation solution between carbon tetrachloride and methenyl bromide.
5.2 Dense preparation
The inorganic high-density dense shall be prepared by dilution method; the diluted
dense can be concentrated by evaporation method, so that improve the density. The
preparation of zinc chloride organic dense can refer to Table 1.
