National Standard of Food Safety - General Rule of
Designation of Food Additives
1 Scope
This Standard is applicable to the designation of food additives. The designation of food
nutritional supplements shall be implemented with reference to this Standard.
This Standard does not apply to the designation of storage and transportation packaging labels
that provide protection for food additives during storage and transportation.
2 Terms and Definitions
2.1 Label
Text, graphics, symbols and other instructions on the packaging of food additives.
2.2 Instructions
Explanatory materials, other than the label, provided when selling food additive products.
2.3 Date of Production (date of manufacture)
The date when the food additives become the final products, that is, the date when the food
additives are packed (filled) into the packaging or container to constitute the final sales unit.
2.4 Shelf Life
The period during which, food additives maintain the quality under the storage conditions
specified by the designation.
2.5 Specifications
When the same package contains multiple pieces of food additives, the expression of the
relations between the net content and the number of items included.
3 Basic Requirements for the Designation of Food Additives
3.1 It shall comply with the stipulations of national laws and regulations, and the stipulations
of corresponding product standards.
3.2 It shall be clear, conspicuous and durable, and easy to identify and read.
3.3 It shall be authentic and accurate. The food additives shall not be introduced in false,
exaggerated, misleading or deceptive words or graphics, nor shall font size or color differences
be used to mislead the users of food additives.
3.4 The food additives shall not be introduced using language that violates the principles for
the use of food additives in GB 2760; language, graphics and symbols that are directly or
indirectly suggestive shall not be used to mislead the use of food additives.
3.5 Directly or indirectly suggestive language, graphics and symbols shall not be used to cause
the users of food additives to confuse the purchased food additives or a certain function of the
food additives with another product. It shall contain no content that disparages other products
(including other foods and food additives).
3.6 The content of disease prevention and treatment shall not be labeled or implied.
3.7 The text requirements for the designation of food additives shall comply with the
stipulations of 3.8 ~ 3.9 in GB 7718-2011.
3.8 The marking format of the label of multi-packaged food additives shall comply with the
stipulations of 3.10 ~ 3.11 in GB 7718-2011.
3.9 If the label of food additives covers all the content that shall be declared in this Standard, it
does not need to be accompanied by instructions.
4 Designation Content and Requirements of Food Additives
Provided to Producers and Operators
4.1 Name
4.1.1 The words “food additives” shall be clearly marked in a conspicuous position on the label
of the food additives.
4.1.2 A single variety of food additive shall be marked with the Chinese name of the food
additive in accordance with the names specified in GB 2760, product quality specifications and
standards for food additives, and food additives approved for use by national competent
authorities. If one or more names of a certain food additive have already been specified in GB
2760, product quality specifications and standards for food additives, and food additives
approved for use by national competent authorities, one of them shall be selected.
4.1.3 The names of compound food additives shall comply with the stipulations of the naming
principles in Chapter 3 of GB 26687-2011.
4.1.4 For food spices, it is necessary to list the Chinese names specified in GB 2760 and food
additives approved for use by national competent authorities. Qualitative descriptions of
“natural” or “synthetic” can be used.
4.4 Date Marking
4.4.1 The production date and shelf life of food additive shall be clearly marked. If the date is
marked in the form of “see a certain part of the packaging”, the specific part of the packaging
shall be marked. Date markings may not be additionally affixed, reprinted or tampered with.
4.4.2 When the same package contains multiple single pieces of food additives with production
date and shelf life marked on them, the shelf life marked on the outer packaging shall be
calculated based on the shelf life of the earliest expired single piece of food additives. The
production date marked on the outer packaging can be the production date of the single piece
of food additives produced the earliest, or the date when the outer packaging constitutes a sales
unit; the production date and shelf life of each single pack of food additive can also be
respectively marked on the outer packaging.
4.4.3 The date can be marked in the order of year, month and day. If not marked in this order,
the order of date marking shall be indicated.
4.5 Storage Conditions
The storage conditions of food additives shall be marked.
4.6 Net Content and Specifications
4.6.1 The marking of net content shall consist of net content, figures and legal measurement
unit.
4.6.2 Based on the legal measurement unit, the net content and specifications of food additives
in the package (container) shall be marked in accordance with the following mode:
a) For liquid food additives, use volume in liters (L or l), milliliters (mL or ml), or mass
in grams (g) or kilograms (kg);
b) For solid food additives, except in the tablet form, use mass in grams (g) or kilograms
(kg);
c) For semi-solid or viscous food additives, use volume in liters (L or l), milliliters (mL
or ml), or mass in grams (g) or kilograms (kg);
d) For food additives in the tablet form, use mass in grams (g) or kilograms (kg), and the
total number of tablets in the package.
4.6.3 When the same package contains multiple single pieces of food additives, the large
package shall be marked with the specifications as well as the net content. The marking of
specifications shall consist of the net content of a single piece of food additive and the number
of pieces, or only the number of pieces; the word “specifications” may not be marked. The
specifications of a single piece of food additive refer to the net content.
4.7 Name and Address of Manufacturer or Dealer
