1 General
1.0.1 This Code has been worked out for the purpose of carrying out the scientific views of
development for the design of wastewater engineering in China, meeting the national laws and
specifications, reaching the requirements to control the water pollution, improving and protecting the
environment, improving the health of people and ensuring the safety.
1.0.2 This code applies to the design for permanent outdoor wastewater engineering that is newly
built, expanded built or rebuilt in urban, industrial district and residential district.
1.0.3 The design for wastewater engineering shall be mainly according to the approved general
planning of the cities, towns, and the special planning of the wastewater engineering, it shall be
proceeded from the whole condition, according to the planning year limit, scale of engineering,
economic benefit, social benefit and environment benefit, the relation of industrial and agriculture,
urbanization and non urbanization district, near future and future, concentration and decentralization,
discharging and utilization in urban shall be correctly treated. After the overall verification, the
protection of environment, economization of lands, advanced technology, reasonable economic,
reliable safety can be reached to fit the local real conditions.
1.0.3ADrainage engineering design shall be based on urban drainage and sewage treatment planning
and coordinate with urban flood control, river way system, road traffic, green space, environmental
protection, sanitation and other special planning and design. Drainage facility design shall be based
on the requirements of urban planning blue line and water face ratio requirement, make full use of
natural storage and drainage facilities; elevation layout of different regions shall be based on the
nature of land used to meet the drainage requirements of different regions.
1.0.4 The choice of the sewerage system (separate system and combined system) shall meet the
following provisions.
1. Determined according to the general planning of the urban, combining the integrated
consideration of the local landform characteristics, hydrological conditions, water body status,
weather characteristics, former sewerage facilities, degree of the wastewater treatment, the water exit
utilization and so on.
2. Different sewerage system can be adopt in different district in the same urban.
3. In addition to arid region with low rainfall, the sewerage system shall set wastewater dam
facilities.
4 Existing combined sewer systems should be required to carry the the implementation of rain
sewage diversion transformation according to urban drainage plan.
5 For the areas that temporarily do not have the conditions of rain and sewage diversion, measures
to closure, a combination of regulation and storage and handling should be taken, to improve
interception ratio, strengthen pollution control in early rainy days.
1.0. 4A Comprehensive rainwater management should be in accordance with Low Impact
Development (LID) concept, using source reduction, process control, end processing and other
methods to control point source pollution, prevent water logging disasters and improve utilization of
2 Terms and Symbols
2.1 Terms
2.1.1Wastewater Engineering, sewerage
Engineering of collecting, transporting, treating, recycling and proposal wastewater and storm
water.
2.1.2Waste water engineering system
Entirety composed of the facilities of collecting, transporting, treating, recycling and proposal
wastewater and storm water in a certain way.
2.1.3 Sewerage system
Way that collects, transports the urban wastewater and storm water in one district. The two
basic ways are combined system and separate system.
2.1.4Wastewater Facilities
General term of the pipes, structures and facilities in the wastewate r engineering.
2.1.5 Combined system
Sewerage way to collect and transport the urban wastewater and storm water using the same
pipe ditch system.
2.1.5A Combined sewer overflow
The condition that the water over the closure capacity is discharged into the water body when
there is rainfall in combined sewer systems.
2.1.6 Separate System
Sewerage way to collect and transport the urban wastewater and storm water using differ ent
pipe ditch system.
2.1.7 Urban Wastewater
General term of discharging all kinds of urban sewerage and wastewater. It is composed by
integrated domestic wastewater, industrial wastewater and infiltrated ground water. In the combined
sewerage system, it also includes the intercepted storm water.
2.1.8 Urban Wastewater System
Entirety composed of the facilities of collecting, transporting, treating, recycling and proposal
the urban wastewater in a certain way.
2.1.8A Diffuse pollution
The phenomenon that the receiving water body is contaminated by the pollutants from the
atmospheric and earth surface, which are eroded into the receiving water body by rainfall and
overland runoff.
2.1.8B Low impact development (LID)
Emphasizing that urban development should reduce the impact on the environment. Its core is
based on concept of source control and delaying the impact load, constructing the town drainage
resulting in the generation of water disaster on urban ground .
2.1.20B Local flooding prevention and control system
A combination of engineering facilities and non-engineering measures for preventing and
responding to local flooding in a certain way, including natural and artificial facilities and
management measures for rainwater harvesting, transportation, regulation and storage, leakage,
treatment and use.
2.1.20C Recurrence interval for local flooding design
Rainstorm recurrence interval for local flooding prevention and control system design, so that
depth impounded water on grounds, roads and other areas do not exceed certain standards.
Recurrence interval for local flooding design is longer than recurrence interval for storm sewer
design.
2.1.21 Time of concentration
Time that the rainfall runoffs from the most far point of surface in the relative catchments area
to the rainfall pipe ditch entrance, for short, concentration time.
2.1.22 Interception Ratio
Ratio of the intercepted storm water amount during the rainfall to the designed dry weather
flow amount in the combined sewerage system.
2.1.23 Drainage Pumping Station
General term of sewerage pumping station, storm water pumping station and combined
sewerage pumping station.
2.1.24 Sewerage Pumping Station
Pumping station to pump wastewater in the separate sewerage system.
2.1.25Storm Water Pumping Station
Pumping station to pump storm water in the separate sewerage system.
2.1.26Combined Sewerage Pumping Station
Pumping station to pump wastewater and the intercepted storm water, storm water in the
combined sewerage system.
2.1.27 Primary Treatment
Process only to settle the wastewater.
2.1.28 Secondary Treatment
Process to settle and biologically treat the wastewater.
2.1.29 Activated Sludge Process, Suspended Growth Process
One method for the biological treatment of the wastewater. This method is to continually mix
and culture for all kinds of microbe colony in the wastewater in artificial condition to form the
activated sludge in suspend status. Using the biological action of the activated sludge, the organic
pollution in the wastewater is decomposed and removed, the sludge is separated from the water.
Most sludge is returned into the biological reaction tank, the extra one is discharged out of the
activated sludge system as the excess activated sludge.
