Foreword
This standard replaces GB/T 6368-1993 Surface active agents - Determination of pH of
aqueous solutions - Potentiometric method.
This standard equivalently adopts ISO 4316.1977 Surface active agents - Determination of
pH of aqueous solutions - Potentiometric method.
The main differences between this standard and the previous version.
- Add the Preface;
- Increase the degree of adoption;
- Increase the quantity of measurement samples, so as to be consistent with international
standards;
- Add Chapter test report.
This standard was proposed by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association.
This standard shall be under the jurisdiction of Chemical Industry Surfactant Standardization
Technical Committee.

1 Scope
This standard specifies the method of adopting potentiometric method to determine pH of aqueous
solution of surface active agents.
This standard applies to the determination of pH of aqueous solution of surface active agents.

3 Principle
Measure the electrode potential difference immersed in an aqueous solution of surface active
agent, expressed in pH value.
4 Reagents
4.1 Distilled water. Without carbon dioxide. It shall comply Grade 3 water as specified in
GB/T 6682-1992. Prepare it according to provision 4.1.1.1 in GB/T 603-2002.
4.2 Standard buffer solution. Select 2 solutions from the common standard solutions to
calibrate the potentiometer. Their pH value shall be as near as possible to the expected pH
value of the sample solution. In which, the difference BETWEEN 1 of the standard solution
AND the expected value must not be greater than 1 pH unit.
5 Instruments and equipment
5.1 pH meter. Minimum scale of 0.1 pH unit.
5.2 Glass electrode.
5.3 Reference electrode. Calomel / potassium chloride saturated solution type.
5.4 Composite electrode. It is used to replace the glass electrode and reference electrode.
