Foreword
This document was drafted in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020
“Directives for standardization - Part 1: Rules for the structure and drafting of
standardizing documents”.
This document modified and adopted ISO 12214:2018 “Road vehicles - Direction-of-
motion stereotypes for automotive hand controls”.
Compared with ISO 12214:2018, this document has many structural adjustments. See
Annex A for a comparison list of structure number changes between the two documents.
Compared with ISO 12214:2018, this document has many technical differences. The
clauses involved are marked with a vertical single line (|) in the outer margin of the
page. See Annex B for a list of these technical differences and their reasons.
The following editorial changes have been made to this document:
- DELETE the annotated description of right-hand driving and related usage habits
in foreign markets in Table 1, Table 2 and Table 4 of ISO 12214:2018;
- MODIFY the explanation of c in the note of Table 2;
- ADD a supplementary explanation that if the control is the controlled part itself and
the direction of on/off motion is not restricted;
- DELETE the first paragraph of 4.3.1 in ISO 12214:2018;
- MODIFY the notes to Table 3 and INCORPORATE part of the content into 4.3.2
as text;
- ADD the diagrams for the configurations of electric window controls in the form
of toggles and levers in Table 4;
- MODIFY the notes to Table 4 and INCORPORATE part of the content into 4.3.3
as text.

Standardization (SAC/TC 114).
Road vehicles direction of motion stereotypes for hand
controls
1 Scope
This document specifies the design requirements for the direction of motion stereotypes
of vehicle hand controls (hand controls).
This document applies to Class M and Class N vehicles, and other types of vehicles
implement this as a reference.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this
document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references,
the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
GB/T 4782 Road vehicles - Controls, indicators and tell-tales - Vocabulary
GB/T 12673 Motor vehicle main dimensions measurement method
GB/T 15089 Classification of power-driven vehicles and trailers
GB/T 17867 Location of hand controls, indicators and tell-tales in motor vehicles
3 Terms and definitions
For the purpose of this document, the terms and definitions defined in GB/T 4782, GB/T
12673, GB/T 15089 and GB/T 17867 and the following apply.
3.1
control configuration
Relevant combination of control type, location, orientation and mounting plane.
3.2
direction of motion stereotype
Direction of motion that a majority of people expects for the effective operation of a
control.
3.3
stereotype strength
Common way that most users activate a control.
3.4
on/off or increase/decrease control
Non-specific function control with activation/deactivation functions or
strengthening/weakening effects.
3.5
specific function control
Control used to activate specific functions.
Examples: Door locking and unlocking controls, window raising and lowering controls, low/high
beam turning on controls and wiper controls.
4 Design requirements
4.1 General
The three-dimensional rectangular coordinate system referenced by the direction of
motion and operation direction of controls shall comply with the requirements of GB/T
12673. The vehicle coordinate system is shown in Figure 1:
- Z plane, which is a plane parallel to the Z datum plane;
- X plane, which is a plane parallel to the X datum plane;
- Y plane, which is a plane parallel to the Y datum plane.
