penetration weld of self-elevating drilling units
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the design bases, design contents and methods,
design requirements and design check of structural full penetration weld of self-
elevating drilling units.
This Standard is applicable to the design of structural full penetration weld of
self-elevating drilling units. The design of structural full penetration weld of other
types of self-elevating units may also refer to this Standard.
2 Design bases
The drawings and technical documents on which the design is based include:
a) contract technical instructions;
b) specifications for the classification by classification society;
c) general layout diagram;
d) basic design drawings of the main structures of the unit;
e) equipment base structure diagram.
3 Design contents and methods
3.1 General requirements
The self-elevating drilling unit structure consists of main body, leg, spudcan,
jacking unit, cantilever, derrick floor, superstructure and helideck. High stress
areas subject to concentrated loads generally require full penetration weld.
3.2 Structural full penetration weld of main body
The division of structural full penetration weld of main body is as follows:
a) The connection of the main bulkhead in the leg trunk range to the main
deck and the outer bottom panel (as shown in Figure 1); the vertical
a) The connection of the jacking unit’s peripheral wall to the main deck and
the outer bottom panel (as shown in Figure 1); the vertical connection of
the ends of the jacking unit’s peripheral wall (as shown in Figure 2);
b) The connection of the main partitions inside the jacking unit to the
peripheral wall;
c) The connection of the ends of the main support structure on the back of
the upper and lower guides;
d) The connection of the jacking gear flange sleeve to the jacking unit’s
peripheral wall;
e) The connection of the ends of the main support structure on the back of
the locking anti-rack support buttress.
3.6 Structural full penetration weld of cantilever
The division of the structural full penetration weld of cantilever is as follows:
a) The connection of the longitudinal I-beam web to the upper and lower
panels (as shown in Figure 5);
b) The connection of the V-shaped plates to the longitudinal I-beam web and
the upper and lower panels (as shown in Figure 5);
c) The connection of the main components of cantilever’s sliding base.
3.9 Structural full penetration weld of helideck
Helideck structures generally do not require full penetration weld. If the unit
uses the truss-type tube support structure, the connection at the support tube
end requires full penetration weld.
NOTE: When considering the division of full penetration weld, it is also necessary to refer to
the opinion of the on-site surveyor of classification society.
4 Design requirements
4.1 The full penetration weld diagram shall clearly show the joints and range of
full penetration welds and use clear markings.
4.2 If the structure (such as main body, spudcan and jacking unit) has more full
penetration welds, or the full penetration weld is not clearly indicated in the
corresponding structure drawings, the full penetration weld diagram of the
structure shall be drawn separately.
4.3 The full penetration weld of other structures (such as leg, cantilever, derrick
floor, superstructure and helideck) is mainly concentrated on the key nodes of
the structure and is generally indicated in the node detail of the corresponding
structure drawings.
5 Design check
5.1 Whether it meets the relevant requirements in the contract technical
instructions.
5.2 Whether it complies with the specifications for the classification by
classification society.
5.3 Whether it correctly implements the design drawings and technical
documents.
5.4 Whether it complies with the stress conditions and stress levels of the
various structures of the self-elevating drilling unit.
5.5 Whether it has a comprehensive assessment of suitability, processability
and economy of the structural system.
