3 Main types
3.1 Volatile antirust paper
It is formed by adding the volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI), into the antirust base paper.
3.2 Volatile antirust plastic film
It is a plastic film, which is made of polyolefin resin as base material, by adding VCI,
through melting and extrusion blowing.
3.3 Volatile antirust inhibitor
A volatile antirust material, which is made of different dosage forms, with VCI added
as excipients AND used in solid form.
4 Selection requirements
4.1 Basis of selection
Appropriate packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor shall be selected from
Appendix A, according to the antirust packaging requirements of the product.
4.2 Material quality
The quality of the selected packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor shall
meet the requirements of the corresponding product standards. The user unit can
determine and verify its entry-factory indicators, as needed.
4.3 Storage and environmental conditions
4.3.1 Storage
The sealed and packaged packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor, as well
as their packaging products, shall be stored in a cool and dry warehouse. Open them
when in use. During continuous use, it shall also be stored in a closed, self-sealing
container. If there is no self-sealing packaging container, the exposure time of the side,
which contains VCI, to the air, shall not exceed 8 h. If the package is damaged or
polluted by sunlight, wind, rain, acid, alkali, salt, the volatile corrosion inhibition ability
shall be re-inspected, according to GB/T 16267; it can be used only after passing the
reinspection.
4.3.2 Environmental conditions
4.3.2.1 Temperature
For packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitors, as well as their packaged
products, the storage environment temperature shall be lower than 65 °C.
4.3.2.2 Relative humidity
For packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor, as well as their packaged
products, the relative humidity of the storage environment shall be lower than 85%.
4.3.2.3 Lighting
Packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor, as well as their packaged products,
shall be protected from sunlight. When unavoidable, use shading material to shield it.
4.3.2.4 Airflow
4.4.4 Using different packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitors in the
same package
When using different packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitors in the same
package, it shall be subjected to an adaptability test according to Appendix B. It can
only be used, after passing the test.
4.4.5 Combined use with lubricants
When the packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor is used for assemblies
containing lubricants, it shall be subjected to an adaptability test according to Appendix
B. It can only be used, after passing the test. Before using the packaging materials with
volatile corrosion inhibitor to pack the assembly, the excess grease on the assembly
shall be removed. If it is a binder or solid lubricant, that is uniformly dispersed and
bound to the matrix, it is not necessary to remove it.
5 Requirements for use
5.1 Dosage
The used amount of packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor depends on
factors, such as the degree of sealing, environmental conditions, product material.
Under normal circumstances, the use area of volatile antirust paper or volatile antirust
plastic film is not less than the surface area of the packaged product. For the volatile
antirust material, which adopts powdery, crystalline volatile antirust materials or other
absorbed porous carriers, THEN, the effective content of VCI, in the sealed packaging
volume, is not less than 35 g/m3.
5.2 Cleaning and drying
Products shall be clean and dry, before packaging with packaging materials with
volatile corrosion inhibitors.
In the process of antirust packaging, the product shall not be touched with bare hands.
When the packaging cannot be completed by mechanized or semi-mechanized
procedures, the cleaning process shall preferably use the solvent gasoline or kerosene,
which contains 5% ~ 10% of anti-fingerprint type antirust oil or dehydration antirust
agent.
5.3 How to use
5.3.1 When using volatile antirust paper, volatile antirust plastic film and the bags, as
well as the bags, belts, envelopes, etc., which are made by them, generally the parts
shall be wrapped. The side containing the VCI shall face the metal. When using volatile
antirust paper or volatile antirust plastic film directly as the packaging bag, the air in
the bag shall be as little as possible; the opening shall be sealed.
5.3.2 When using a volatile rust inhibitor, the vapor of the corrosion inhibitor can reach
the metal surface, by means of hanging bags. The volatile antirust powder can also be
sprayed directly into the sealed container, by spraying and atomization; then the
container is sealed immediately.
5.3.3 There shall be no other materials, between the products and the packaging material
with volatile corrosion inhibitor. It is allowed to use the trace oil film, which is formed
after cleaning and drying by solvent dilution type, anti-fingerprint type antirust oil or
dehydrated antirust oil, as well as the protective passivation film.
5.3.4 The surface of the product to be antirust shall be within 300 mm of the packaging
materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor.
5.3.5 All packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor shall be sealed.
5.3.6 If the packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor has other instructions
for use, it can be used according to the instructions.
5.3.7 When the packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor is used for metal
products, which are stacked in layers, it shall be placed between each layer. When used
in a carton, which has an isolation board, except that the inner wall of the carton is lined
with packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor, the upper and lower surfaces
of each layer of the isolation board shall be lined with packaging materials with volatile
corrosion inhibitor.
5.3.8 In order to prevent damage to the product or the sealed package, use pads and
cushioning materials to closely surround the product, at the protruding sharp corners
and edges. If the use of packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor affects the
contacted products, use aluminum foil or other shielding materials, to separate the
product from the packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor.
5.3.9 Volatile antirust materials, such as gas-phase antirust oil, shall be applied to
sealing parts, such as cylinders, gear boxes, etc., AND sealed immediately. For
components, which have small through holes, when the hole depth is greater than 150
mm, the materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor shall be embedded in the hole; the
distance, from the volatile antirust materials to the part to be protected, shall not exceed
300 mm. To protect the inside of sealing parts and blind hole components, the minimum
amount of volatile antirust material shall meet the requirements of 5.1. If necessary, use
a label or other form, on the component, to indicate that "not to be used until the volatile
antirust material is removed".
5.3.10 When the product is coated with working oil, it is necessary to add an oil-proof
barrier material, between the packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor and
the outer packaging material, to prevent the outer packaging from being saturated with
oil. The packaging materials with volatile corrosion inhibitor, which has dual
performance of gas-phase antirust and barrier properties, can also be used directly.
