1 Scope

This document specifies the equipment, reagents, methods for neutral salt spray (NSS), acetic acid salt spray (AASS), copper accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) tests. This document also specifies methods for evaluating the corrosiveness of the test chamber atmosphere.

2 Normative references

The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For the dated documents, only the versions with the dates indicated are applicable to this document; for the undated documents, only the latest version (including all the amendments) is applicable to this standard. GB/T 6461 Methods for corrosion testing of metallic and other inorganic coatings on metallic substrates - Rating of test specimens and manufactured articles subjected to corrosion tests (GB/T 6461-2002, ISO 10289.1999, IDT) GB/T 9271 Paints and varnishes standard panels for testing (GB/T 9271- 2008, ISO 1514.2004, MOD)

3 Terms and definitions

The terms and definitions, as defined in GB/T 10123, as well as the following terms and definitions, apply to this document.

4 Principle

4.3 The copper accelerated acetic acid salt spray test (CASS) is a test method, in which a 5% sodium chloride acid solution, added with copper chloride and glacial acetic acid, is atomized, in a controlled environment.

5 Test solution

If necessary, filter the solution, before adding it to the storage tank of the equipment, to remove any solid matter, that may block the spray holes of the device.

6 Test equipment

The heating system keeps the temperature inside the chamber up to the requirements of 10.1.The distance, between the temperature measurement area and the inner wall of the chamber and the heat source, shall not be less than 100 mm. If the test chamber has been used for AASS or CASS tests, or other solutions different from NSS, it shall not be used directly for NSS tests. If it wants to use it again, it shall thoroughly clean the salt spray chamber;

7 Methods of evaluating the performance of salt spray chamber

If the quality loss of the steel reference specimen is within the allowable range, as shown in Table 2, the performance of the test chamber meets the requirements.

8 Test specimen

8.2 If there are no other provisions, the test specimen shall be thoroughly cleaned, before the test. The cleaning method depends on the nature of the test specimen material, the surface of the test specimen, its dirt. The cleaning shall not use abrasives or solvents, which may attack the surface of the test specimen. After cleaning the test specimens, care shall be taken to avoid re- contamination.

9 Placement of test specimens

9.3 The test specimens can be placed on different levels, in the chamber, BUT they cannot touch the chamber or each other. The distance, between the test specimens, shall not affect the free fall of the salt spray on the surface to be tested; the droplets on the test specimen or its holder shall not fall on other test specimens. For test specimens, which have a total test period of more than 96 h, after inspection, it may allow shifting. ......
