In accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural
Development of the People's Republic of China on Printing and Distributing
(JIANBIAO [2008] No.102), this code was drafted by the drafting group of “Code
for design of sprinkler system” after making extensive investigation, carefully
summarizing practical experiences, making reference to relevant international
standard and overseas advanced standards, and extensive soliciting of
The revision of this standard is, in accordance with the national guidelines on
basic construction and the fire prevention policy of “prevention-oriented,
prevention-firefighting combined”, based on the scientific research
achievements, design and current situation of use of the sprinkler system in
China, after extensive solicitating the domestic opinions on such departments
as scientific research, design, production, firefighting supervision, and
universities, and at the same time making reference to the relevant standards
of the ISO, USA, UK and other developed countries, jointly reviewed and
finalized by the relevant departments.
The main technical contents of this code are. general provisions, terminologies
and symbols, hazard classification of occupancies, basic requirements, basic
design parameters, system components, sprinkler arrangement, pipe, hydraulic
calculation, water supply, operation and control, local application system, and
so on.
The main technical content of this revision of this code is.
1. REARRANGE the terms of the sprinkler system type and sprinkler type;
2. ENRICH the technical requirements for sprinkler system design in civil
buildings, warehouses and other places, ADD the technical content of the
sprinkler protection and cooling system;
3. ADD the application technical requirements for new sprinkler and pipelines,
with particular emphasis on system type selection based on setting
locations and system design based on sprinkler type;
4. MODIFY some provisions inconvenient for operation in the current code,
COORDINATE the relationship with other code.
The provisions marked in bold in this Code are mandatory provisions, which
must be strictly enforced.

1 General provisions
1.0.1 This code is developed to properly and reasonably design sprinkler
systems and to protect the safety of the person and property.
1.0.2 This code applies to the design of sprinkler systems in newly built,
expanded or rebuilt civil and industrial buildings.
This code does not apply to the design of sprinkler systems in buildings of
special functions such as gunpowder, explosives, ammunition, pyrotechnics
factories, nuclear power plants and hangars.
1.0.3 The design of the sprinkler system shall closely integrate the functions of
protection objects and fire characteristics, and actively adopt new technologies,
new equipment, and new materials, so that they are safe, reliable,
technologically advanced, and economically reasonable.
1.0.4 The system components used in the design must comply with the current
relevant national standards and shall meet the requirements of the market
access system for firefighting products.
1.0.5 When the buildings or the areas in the buildings which are set sprinkler
system change their applications, it shall check the suitability of the original
system. When it is not applicable, it shall be redesigned in accordance with this

2 Terminologies and symbols
2.1 Terms
2.1.1 Sprinkler system
The automatic fire extinguishing system that can spray water in the event of a
fire, which consists of sprinkler, alarm valve sets, waterflow alarm devices
(waterflow indicators or pressure switches), as well as pipelines, water supply
facilities, etc.
2.1.2 Close-type sprinkler system
The sprinkler system which uses the close-type sprinklers.
2.1.3 Open-type sprinkler system
The sprinkler system which uses the open-type sprinklers.
2.1.4 Wet pipe sprinkler system
The close-type system in the quasi-operating state of which the water
distribution pipeline is filled with pressurized water for starting the system.
2.1.5 Dry pipe sprinkler system
The close-type system in the quasi-operating state of which the water
distribution pipeline is filled with pressurized gas for starting the system.
2.1.6 Preaction sprinkler system
The close-type system in the quasi-operating state of which the water
distribution pipeline is not filled with water, and when a fire occurs, the pressure
switch interlocking of the fire automatic alarm system and charging pipeline is
used to control the preaction device and to start the firefighting water pumps,
so as to supply water to the water distribution pipeline.
2.1.7 Recycling preaction sprinkler system
The preaction sprinkler system that can close the valve automatically after
putting out fire and open the valve again to spray water in case of re-ignition.
2.1.8 Deluge sprinkler system
An open-type system which consists of an open-type sprinkler and a deluge
alarm valve set, is controlled by the automatic fire alarm system or transmission
pipe in case of a fire, to automatically start the deluge alarm valve set and to

protection area larger than the protection area of the standard coverage
sprinkler but not more than 36 m2, including upright type, pendent type and side
wall type extended coverage sprinklers.
2.1.21 Standard orifice sprinkler
Standard coverage sprinkler which has a flow coefficient K = 80.
2.1.22 Early suppression fast response (ESFR) sprinkler
The standard coverage sprinkler which has a flow coefficient K ≥ 161 and a
response time index RTI ≤ 28 ± 8 (m • s) 0.5, used to protect the stacks and high
rack warehouses.
2.1.23 Specific application sprinkler
The standard coverage sprinkler which has a flow coefficient K ≥ 161 and larger
droplet diameter, used for civil buildings, plant large space areas and
warehouses after passing the standard test verification, including non-
warehouse specific application sprinkler and warehouse type specific
application sprinkler.
2.1.24 Residential sprinkler
A quick-response sprinkler for residential buildings and non-residential
