Summary: This standard specifies the MAC, the lower sub-layer data link layer. FDDI uses optical fiber as a transmission medium between computers and peripheral devices to provide a high-bandwidth (100Mbit/s) general interconnect. FDDI can be configured to support about 80Mbit/s (10Mbyte/s) the sustained transfer rate. It may not meet the response time of all high-speed devices without buffering requirements. FDDI connection established many stations distributed between several kilometers long. The default value is based on 1000 FDDI physical link and a total length of 200km of fiber channel (typically corresponding to 500 stations and 100km of dual cable).
