Furniture hardware -- Installation dimension of cup
hinge
1 Subject content and scope of application
This standard specifies the basic installation dimensions of cup hinges for
furniture.
This standard applies to the design, manufacture, installation of cup hinges for
furniture.
2 Terms
2.1 Overlay type
The installation method where the door is overlaid on the front side of the side
panel.
Commonly known as overlay door, cover door.
2.2 Inset type
The installation method where the front side of the side panel is on the same
plane as the door surface OR protrudes from the door surface.
Commonly known as suction door, upper door, entrance door.
2.3 Strip base
A base in straight form (see Figure 3). During installation, the axis connection
of the two mounting holes or pins on the strip base shall be kept perpendicular
to the front side of the side panel.
2.4 Wing base
The base which has lugs on both sides (see Figure 3). During installation, the
axis connection of the two mounting holes or pins on the lugs of base shall be
kept parallel to the front side of the side panel.
2.5 Design datum plane
The reference plane which is determined by the cup hinge's manufacturer when
designing the relevant parameters. When the base is connected with the hinge
arm, meanwhile the adjusting screw is in a loosened state, the reference plane
is parallel to the plane of the base.
2.6 Zero base
In the cup hinge's base series, the base whose bottom plane coincides with the
design datum plane.
3 Parameters and parameter relations
3.1 Parameter A
The design parameter that indicates the relative installation position between
the door and the side panel. It is, when the door is in a 90° closed position as
relative to the side panel, the distance from the side of the door to the inner
surface of the side panel. See Figure 1.
3.2 Parameter B
The design parameter that indicates the degree of bending of the hinge arm. It
is, when the door is in a 90° closed position as relative to the side panel, the
distance FROM the design datum plane TO the outer tangent plane of the
cylindrical surface of the hinge cup, on the side of the nearest door. See Figure
1.
3.3 Parameter C
The design parameter that indicates the relative position between the hinge cup
hole and the side of the door. It is the minimum distance from the side of the
door to the cylindrical surface of the hinge cup. See Figure 1.
3.4 Parameter H
Design parameter that indicates the relative position between the design datum
plane and the inner surface of the side panel. It is the distance from the design
datum plane to the inner surface of the side panel. See Figure 1.
When the parameter H > 0, use the bases of different thickness series OR zero
bases plus gaskets, to meet the value of H.
3.7 Parameter L
When the parameter H = 0, AND the door is opened to a position which is
parallel to the side panel, the distance BETWEEN the inner surface of the door
AND the inner surface of the side panel. See Figure 2.
3.8 Parameter relationship
The algebraic relationship of parameters A, B, C, H is H = A + B + C.
For the cover-mounted type, the A value is negative; for the flush-mounted type,
the A value is positive.
When the design datum plane is perpendicular to the hinge cup's installation
plane, for the design datum plane's position as relative to the cylindrical surface
of the hinge cup closest to the door side: when separated, the value of B is
negative; when it is tangent, the value of B is zero; when intercrossed, the value
of B is positive.
In any case, the C value is positive,
When H ≥ 0, the is an effective design.
In addition to the above-mentioned parameter relations, for the mutual
restrictive relation of related parameters AND the movement trajectory diagram
of the cup hinge, refer to Appendix A.
4 Structure
Cup hinges are generally composed of the following items: hinge cups,
connecting plates, hinge arms, bases, fastening screws, adjusting screws. The
schematic diagram is as shown in Figure 3:
with the wing base.
5.4 On the door and side panel, for the distance of mounting holes of the cup
hinges, the machining error shall be controlled within ±0.2 mm.
6 Compilation of installation instructions
6.1 The cup hinge's manufacturer shall include the following contents into the
product manual.
a. The structure and dimensions of the cup hinge and the installation parts
of its base;
b. The types, specifications, quantities of applicable standard parts and other
connection accessories;
c. Applicable assembly diagram and parameter indications;
d. Parameter relationship H = A + B + C;
e. The series parameter values of parameter H;
f. The series parameter value of parameter B, including the indication of
positive and negative;
g. Table of δXmax values corresponding to different door thicknesses and
different C values;
h. Within the value range of C, when δYmax appears, it shall also list the δYmax
values;
i. Provision of the L value corresponding to different B values, OR one of
them;
j. The maximum adjustment in the three-dimensional direction of the installed
door.
6.2 The cup hinge's manufacturer shall, when calculating the parameter
relationship, not use the adjustment quantity of the adjusting screw as the
insertion compensation quantity.
A2.2 The values of the parameters δXmax and δYmax vary with the variation of the
trajectory curve of point a and point b. However, the trajectory curve of point a
and point b vary with the variation of the following conditions.
a. In the four-bar linkage mechanism, as long as the original coordinate's
position of one joint changes, the trajectory curve of point a and point b
will also change.
b. When the parameter value of parameter C is changed, it is equivalent to
making the four-bar linkage mechanism translate in the X-axis direction.
Therefore, the trajectory curve of point a and point b will also change.
c. When the thickness value of the door is changed, the coordinate position
of point a, as relative to the four-bar linkage mechanism, has changed.
Therefore, the trajectory curve of point a will change accordingly.
Therefore, for a cup hinge that has been determined, the value of the parameter
δXmax will be restricted by the parameter C and the door thickness; whilst the
parameter δYmax is only restricted by the parameter C.
A2.3 The value of parameter A is restricted by the parameter δXmax.
A2.4 When there is δYmax, it is necessary to check the installation gap of the
door in the depth direction of the cabinet.
A2.5 In the area where the door opens from the 0° position to the 90° position,
the parameters δXmax and δYmax are thereby defined. Therefore, this Figure is
also suitable for cup hinges which have an opening angle greater than 90°.
