Foreword
All the technical content of this Standard is mandatory.
This Standard corresponds to United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ECE
R38 Rev.2 Amend.2 “Uniform Provisions Concerning the Approval of Rear Fog Lamps
for Power-driven Vehicles and Their Trailers”. This Standard is not equivalent to ECE
R38, with the main differences as follows.
-- it modifies Chapter 1 “Scope”;
-- it increases Normative References;
-- it deletes the following chapters and annexes concerning management of ECE
R38.
2. Application for approval;
3. Markings;
4. Approval;
10. Conformity of production;
11. Penalties for non-conformity of production;
12. Production definitively discontinued; and
13. Names and addresses of Technical Services responsible for conducting
approval tests, and of Type Approval Authorities;
-- it increases Inspection Rules.
The main technical specifications of this Standard are the same as ECE R38, such as
Specifications and Test procedure.
This Standard replaces GB 11554-1998 “Uniform Provisions Concerning the Approval
of Rear Fog Lamps for Power-driven Vehicles and Their Trailers”. Compared with the
previous edition, the main changes of this Standard are as follows.
-- it modifies Chapter 1 “Scope” of the previous edition;
-- it modifies Chapter 2 “Normative References” of the previous edition;
-- it modifies relevant provisions on Definitions in Chapter 3 of the previous edition;
-- it modifies relevant provisions in the Technical specifications of Chapter 4 of the
previous edition;
Photometric Characteristics of Rear Fog Lamp for
Power-driven Vehicles and Their Trailers
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the technical specifications, test methods and inspection rules
of rear fog lamps for motor vehicles and their trailers.
This Standard applies to all types of rear fog lamps for power-driven vehicles of
categories L3, L4, L5, L7, M, N and trailer of category O.
In this Standard, the rear fog lamps of power-driven vehicles and their trailers are
referred to as rear fog lamps.
L7 refers to four-wheeled motorcycles.
2 Normative References
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through
reference in this Standard. For dated references, the subsequent amendments
(excluding corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this Standard, however, parties
who reach an agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest
versions of these documents are applicable. For undated references, the latest edition
of the referenced document applies.
GB 4599 Motor Vehicle Headlamps Equipped with Filament Lamps
GB 4785 Prescription for Installation of the External Lighting and Light-Signalling
Devices for Motor Vehicles and Their Trailers
GB 15766.1 Lamps for Road Vehicles - Dimensional Electrical and Luminous
Specifications (GB 15766.1-2000 idt IEC 60809.1995)
ECE R37 Uniform Provisions Concerning the Approval of Filament Lamps for
Use in Approved Lamp Units of Power-Driven Vehicles and of Their Trailers
3 Terms and Definitions
For the purpose of this Standard, the terms and definitions given in GB 4785 apply.
5.2.5 Photometric measurement of lamps equipped with several light sources
5.2.5.1 For replaceable filament lamps mass produced.
When equipped with light source(s) at 6.75 V, 13.5 V or 28.0 V, the lamps mass
produced can be used and the luminous intensity values produced shall be corrected.
For filament lamps the correction factor is the ratio between the reference luminous
flux and the mean value of the luminous flux found at the voltage applied (6.75 V, 13.5
V or 28.0 V). The actual luminous fluxes of each light source used shall not deviate
more than 5 per cent from the mean value. Alternatively and in case of filament lamps
only, a standard filament lamp may be used in turn, in each of the individual positions,
operated at its reference flux, the individual measurements in each position being
added together.
5.2.5.2 In the case of a lamp equipped with non-replaceable light sources or other, it
shall be measured at the voltage prescribed by the manufacturer and the manufacturer
shall provide a special power supply device when necessary.
5.3 Conditions of heat resistance test
5.3.1 In the case of a lamp equipped with non-replaceable light sources (filament
lamps and other), it shall be tested at 6.75 V, 13.5 V or 28.0 V respectively.
5.3.2 In the case of a lamp equipped with replaceable light sources, the test shall be
carried out by regulating the voltage to obtain the mean power specified in GB 15766.1
and ECE R37; and where only the maximum power is specified, the test shall be
carried out by regulating the voltage to obtain a power equal to 90 per cent of the
specified power.
5.3.3 In the case of light sources equipped with a variable luminous intensity control,
the test shall be carried out under the conditions given at minimum 90 per cent of the
higher luminous intensity.
5.4 Before the photometric performance test, a rear fog lamp or filament lamp
equipped with non-replaceable light sources shall be illuminated at the testing voltage
and its photometric performance shall be stabilized.
5.5 The distance of the photometric measurement shall be such that the law of the
inverse of the square of the distance is applicable.
5.6 The measuring equipment shall be such that the angle subtended by the receiver
from the reference centre of the light is between 10' and 1°.
5.7 The intensity requirement for a particular direction of observation shall be
satisfied if the required intensity is obtained in a direction deviating by not more than
one-quarter of a degree from the direction of observation.
5.8 The measurement of measuring angle shall be based on reference axes and
reference centres which shall be indicated on the drawings of the manufacturer.
