Seawater Quality Requirements
and Analysis Methods for Seawater
Cooling System – Part 2. Determination of Zinc
1 Scope
This Part of GB/T 33584 specifies the seawater cooling water quality requirements and
adopting spectrophotometry to determine the zinc in the seawater cooling water.
This Part is applicable to determine the zine content in seawater cooling water at
0.2mg/L ~ 5.0mg/L.

GB/T 12807 Laboratory Glassware – Graduated Pipettes
GB/T 12808 Laboratory Glassware – One-Mark Pipettes
3 Water Quality Requirements
The major water quality of seawater cooling water shall conform to the provisions of
Table 1.
6.3 Colorimeter tube with stopper. capacity of 50mL.
6.4 One-mark volumetric flask. capacity of 50mL, 100mL and 1000mL, which shall
meet the requirements of Level-A specified in GB/T 12806.
6.5 Graduated pipette. capacity of 1mL, 2mL, 5mL and 10mL, which shall meet the
requirements Level-A specified in GB/T 12807.
6.6 One-mark pipette. capacity of 10mL, which shall meet the requirements of Level-
A specified in GB/T 12808.
7 Analytical Procedures
7.1 Drawing of standard curve
Use graduated pipette to absorb 0.0mL, 0.5mL, 1.0mL, 2.0mL, 3.0mL, 4.0mL, 5.0mL
of zinc standard solution (5.8), place them into 7 pieces of 50mL colorimeter tubes with
stopper, respectively; successively add 10mL of artificial seawater (5.9) with the similar
salinity as the to-be-tested sample; add water to near the scale line of 25mL.
Successively add, to the above colorimeter tube with stopper, 10.0mL of boric acid –
Potassium chloride – sodium hydroxide buffer solution (5.5) and 5.0mL of zinc reagent
ethanol solution (5.6); use water to dilute to the scale, shake evenly; the corresponding
zinc content is 0µg, 5µg, 10µg, 20µg, 30µg, 40µg, 50µg; stand for 10min. Adjust the
spectrophotometer wavelength to be 620nm; use 1cm cuvette, take standard solution
with zinc content of zero as the reference solution, to measure the absorbance.
Draw the standard curve with absorbance as the ordinate, zinc content (µg) as
abscissa.
7.2 Determination of zinc
Absorb 10mL of specimen by the one-mark pipette, place into 100mL beaker; add
0.5mL of sulfuric acid solution (5.3) and 1mL of ammonium persulfate solution (5.4);
add water till the solution volume is 25mL. Slightly boiling for 5min; take off; cool off to
the room temperature. Then add 1 drop of methyl orange solution (5.10); use the
sodium hydroxide solution (5.1) to turn the solution into yellow.
Transfer the above solution into 50mL colorimeter tube with stopper; add 10.0mL of
boric acid – potassium chloride – sodium hydroxide buffer solution (5.5); 5.0mL of zinc
reagent ethanol solution (5.6); use water to dilute to the scale, shake evenly.
Meanwhile do the blank test of artificial seawater reagent.
Place for 10min; adjust the spectrophotometer wavelength to be 620nm; use 1cm
cuvette, take standard solution with zinc content of zero as the reference solution, to
measure the absorbance; check out the zinc content (µg) from the standard curve.
