Detection method of contamination layer on the surface of titanium and titanium alloy
1 Scope
This document describes the determination of the surface contamination layer (also called α layer) of titanium and titanium alloy products and the measurement of the α layer thickness by metallographic method and microhardness method.
method.
This document is applicable to the determination of surface contamination layer and measurement of α layer thickness on titanium and titanium alloy products.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1
alpha case
An alpha-stable surface layer enriched in oxygen, nitrogen and carbon.
Note. The α layer is usually formed when exposed to air at high temperature. It is usually hard and brittle and is considered harmful. It is also called the surface contamination layer.
3.2
Thickness of alpha case
The maximum depth of the continuous α layer and the extended discontinuous α layer on the surface of titanium and titanium alloys.
4 Symbols
The symbols defined in GB/T 38982 apply to this document.
5 Principle
The prepared metallographic sample retaining the original surface of the product is used with a specific corrosive agent to reveal the α-phase enriched layer structure that is different from the matrix structure.
The thickness of the α layer is measured under a microscope, i.e. metallographic method.
The hardness tester measures the specific relationship between the hardness values of the α layer and the matrix structure to determine the thickness of the thicker α layer, which is the microhardness method.
6 Reagents
Unless otherwise specified, only confirmed chemically pure reagents, distilled water or deionized water (hereinafter referred to as water) were used in the experiments.
