1 Scope

This standard specifies the non-dispersive infrared absorption method for the determination of total organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon, and particulate organic carbon in seawater. This standard applies to the determination of total organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon and particulate organic carbon in seawater. 3 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document. 3.1 Total organic carbon; TOC The carbon content of organic matter per unit volume of seawater. 3.2 Dissolvable organic carbon; DOC Organic carbon contained in seawater passing through a 0.45μm filter membrane. 3.3 Non-purgeable organic carbon; NPOC The carbon content of organic matter contained in seawater after acidification and purging/bubbling to remove inorganic carbon. 3.4 Particulate organic carbon; POC When the seawater is filtered through a 0.45μm filter membrane, the organic carbon remaining on the filter membrane.

4 Principle of the method

Total organic carbon (hereinafter referred to as TOC) is determined by the following two methods. ---Total carbon-inorganic carbon (TC-IC) method.
