This standard applies to chemical risk assessment. 2 Terms, definitions and abbreviations 2.1 Terms and definitions The following terms and definitions apply to this document. 2.1.1 Hazard hazard Danger The inherent characteristics of chemicals that may cause adverse effects upon exposure of organisms, systems or (sub) populations. 2.1.2 Risk Under certain circumstances, the possibility of adverse effects on the exposure of organisms, systems or (sub) populations to a chemical. 2.1.3 Risk assessment riskassessment Calculation or estimation of the risks and uncertainties associated with a target organism, system or (sub) population of a given chemical under conditions of exposure process. Note The risk assessment process consists of four steps. hazard identification, hazard characterization, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. The risk assessment needs to take into account the chemical's internal Characterization, and characteristics of a particular target biological system. 2.1.4 Hazard assessment hazardassessment Identify the process by which organisms, systems, or (sub) populations may cause potential harm when exposed to a chemical. Note The hazard assessment process includes hazard identification and hazard characterization. Hazard assessment focuses on hazards and does not include exposure assessment and risk characterization as compared to risk assessment content. 2.1.5 Hazard identification hazardidentification Identification of the types and properties of chemicals that have the potential to cause adverse effects on organisms, systems or (sub) populations. Note. Hazard identification is the first stage in the process of hazard assessment and is also the first of four steps in risk assessment. 2.1.6 Hazard Characterization hazardcharacterization Qualitative or quantitative (if applicable) Describe the inherent characteristics of a chemical that could potentially affect the hazard. Note. Hazard characterization includes dose-response assessment and associated uncertainty. Hazard characterization is the second stage of the hazard assessment and also a four step risk assessment In the second step. 2.1.7 Exposure assessment assessment Assessment of exposure of organisms, systems or (sub) populations to chemicals (and their derivatives).
