Water Resistance of Textiles for Medical Protective Apparel - Impact Penetration Test 1 Scope This Standard stipulates the principle, operating procedures, result and evaluation, and laboratory report of impact penetration test method for water resistance of textiles for medical protective apparel. This Standard is applicable to the evaluation of water resistance of textiles for medical protective apparel with or without waterproof finishing. This Standard is inapplicable to textiles for medical protective apparel that cannot maintain a flat state under tension (hereinafter referred to as textiles). 2 Normative References The following documents are indispensable to the application of this document. In terms of references without a specified date, the latest version (including all the modifications) is applicable to this document. GB/T 6529 Textiles - Standard Atmospheres for Conditioning and Testing GB/T 6682 Water for Analytical Laboratory Use - Specification and Test Methods 3 Terms and Definitions The following terms and definitions are applicable to this document. 3.1 Water Resistance Water resistance refers to textiles’ resistance to moisture and water penetration. 4 Principle Spray a certain volume of water onto the surface of a sample. By weighing the mass change of the water-absorbent paper under the sample before and after the spraying, evaluate the sample’s water resistance. 5 Instruments and Textiles 5.1 Impact Water Permeability Tester Impact water permeability tester is divided into Type-I and Type-II. Type-II adds water- stopping baffle and waterdrop collection box. Sketch maps of the physical tester are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2; design parameters are shown in Figure 3. 5.2 Water-absorbent Paper Thickness (0.71 ± 0.1) mm; gram weight (370 ± 4.5) g/m2; water-absorbing capacity (220 ± 30) %; dimensions (229 ± 10) mm  (152 ± 10) mm. 5.3 Water for Laboratory Use Comply with Grade-3 water specified in GB/T 6682. Temperature shall be controlled at (27 ± 1) °C. 5.4 Balance Accurate to 0.1 g. 6 Test Preparation At least cut off 3 samples from textiles. Sample dimensions are: (330 ± 10) mm  (178 ± 10) mm. If applicable, the samples’ lengthwise direction shall be warp-wise. Before the test, conduct temperature and humidity adjustment treatment on the samples and the water-absorbent paper in accordance with the stipulations in GB/T 6529. The treatment conditions are: relative humidity (65 ± 2) %; temperature (21 ± 1) °C; treatment duration shall be at least 4 h. 7 Operating Procedures 7.1 Use a spring clip with the chuck width of (152 ± 10) mm to clamp one end of the sample on the top of the tester’s bevel. Use another spring clip with the mass of (0.45 ± 0.05) kg and the chuck width of (152 ± 10) mm to clamp at the free end of the sample. 7.2 Weigh standard water-absorbent paper, accurate to 0.1 g. Insert it under the sample. 7.3 Adjust the position of the nozzle, so that the center of the sample is (610 ± 10) mm below the center of the nozzle surface. 7.4 Promptly and steadily inject (500 ± 10) mL of water (5.3) into the funnel of the tester; make the water continuously spray onto the sample. When injecting the water into the funnel, DO NOT generate vortex in the funnel; the spraying time shall be controlled within 50 s. 7.5 After the entire spraying is finished (2 s after the fluid flow stops), carefully pick up the sample. Remove the water-absorbent paper, then, quickly weigh it, accurate to 0.1 g. 8 Result and Evaluation The water resistance test result of each sample is the increase in mass before and after the test of the water-absorbent paper, expressed in grams (g). The result of textiles’ water resistance is the average value of the test results of all samples. When the test result of a single sample or the average test value is larger than 5.0 g, it may be expressed as “+ 5.0 g” or “> 5.0 g” in the test report. 9 Laboratory Report Laboratory report shall at least include the following content: a) Serial No. of this Standard; b) All the necessary information for the identification of test samples; c) Quantity of test samples; d) Environmental conditions (such as: temperature and humidity) of pre- treatment and tests; e) Any deviation from the specific test procedures in this Standard; f) Test result.
