Foreword
This Standard is identical to ISO 1463:2003 “Metallic and oxide coatings -
Measurement of coating thickness - Microscopical method” (English edition).
This Standard is identical to translation of ISO 1463:2003.
For ease of use, this Standard has made the following editorial changes:
a) CHANGE the word 'this International Standard' to 'this Standard';
b) CHANGE the word 'this country' to 'country';
c) USE a decimal point '.' instead of a comma ',' as a decimal point;
d) Delete the Foreword of the international standard.
This Standard replaces GB/T 6462-1986 "Metallic and oxide coatings -
Measurement of coating thickness - Microscopical method". Compared with
GB/T 6462-1986, the main changes are as follows:
- CHANGE the standard name to "Metallic and oxide coatings -
Measurement of coating thickness - Microscopical method"; [Translator
note: Chinese name of this Standard has been changed.]
- ADD the scope of application of measurement method (Clause 1);
- ADD Normative references (Clause 2);
- ADD definition of local thickness (Clause 3);
- ADD Annex B.

1 Scope
This Standard describes a method for the measurement of the local thickness
of metallic coatings, oxide layers, and porcelain or vitreous enamel coatings, by
the microscopical examination of cross-sections using an optical microscope.
