Foreword
This Standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Standard replaces GB/T 5398-1999 Test methods for large transport
packages. Compared with GB/T 5398-1999, in addition to editorial
modifications, the main technical changes are as follows.
- in Scope, added “palletized unit load” (see Clause 1);
- further specified the definition of large transport package (see 3.1);
- modified the requirements of “impact countertop” (see 5.2);
- modified “Figure 1” “Figure 2” “Figure 3”;
- added the method of “free fall test” (see 6.6.1.4);
- added the method of “inclining test” (see 6.6.2).
This Standard was proposed by and shall be under the jurisdiction of National
Technical Committee on Packaging of Standardization Administration of China
(SAC/TC 49).

Test methods for large transport packages
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the test methods for falling, stacking, lifting and other
tests of large transport packages.
This Standard is mainly applicable to large transport packages and palletized
unit loads. Other shapes of packages of equivalent mass and volume can also
refer to use.

3 Terms and definitions
The terms and definitions specified in GB/T 4122.1 as well as the following ones
apply to this Standard.
3.1 large transport package
the transport package of which its mass and volume requires mechanical
loading and unloading
NOTE The mass of such package is generally greater than 45 kg. It usually requires
packaging box, chassis or tray for fixing or transporting.
4 Test principle
The tests contained in this Standard use environmental simulation to reproduce
hazards caused by falling, stacking, lifting...during the process of circulation of
packages.
5 Test equipment
5.1 Lifting equipment
Any suitable equipment such as a crane, forklift, pulley block, jack or special
test equipment can be used.
5.2 Impact countertop
The impact countertop should be flat and have a certain rigidity. When it
withstands 10 kg of static load at any 10 mm × 10 mm, its deformation does not
exceed 0.1 mm. The horizontal height difference between any two points on the
impact countertop must not exceed 2 mm. For test sample of which the contact
size with the surface of impact countertop exceeds 1000 mm, the maximum
deviation of horizontal height difference between any two points is allowed not
to exceed 5 mm. The mass of the impact countertop should be more than 50
times the test sample and big enough to ensure that the sample is completely
on its surface.
6 Test procedure
6.1 Preparation of test sample
Prepare the test sample according to the requirements of GB/T 4857.17.
g) the equipment and instrument type used for the test;
h) the predetermined state of test sample during the test;
i) test sample, test sequence and number of tests;
j) record the test results and present the analysis report;
k) describe the difference between the test method used and this Standard;
l) test date, signature of test personnel, seal of test organization.
