Foreword
This standard replaces GB/T 3207-1988 "Bright steel".
Compared with GB/T 3207-1988, the main technical changes of this standard
are as follows.
- The diameter range of bright steel is expanded from 0.6 mm ~ 80 mm to
1.0 mm ~ 180 mm;
- ADD the definition of bright steel and flake steel; MODIFY the definition of
polished material;
- CANCEL the "grind-pulling" in the original standard delivery status;
- ADD the reference cross-sectional area and reference weight with a
diameter greater than 80 mm;
- MODIFY the diameter range corresponding to the allowable diameter
deviation; COMBINE the diameters of 0.6 mm ~ 1.0 mm and > 1.0 mm ~
3.0 mm into a diameter of ≤ 3.0 mm; DIVIDE the specification range of more
than 50 mm into three specification ranges. > 50 mm ~ 80 mm, > 80 mm ~
120 mm, > 120 mm ~ 180 mm;
- ADD the allowable tolerance level of the diameter of bright steel, from 7 ~
11 to 6 ~ 13;
- MODIFY the length of bright steel; TIGHTEN the allowable deviation of the
length;
- MODIFY the shape requirements of bright steel, from allowing bright steel
with a diameter of not more than 10 mm to be delivered in coiled state, to
allowing bright steel to be delivered in coiled state after mutual agreement;
- MODIFY the curvature to straightness;
- MODIFY the flatness index; CANCEL the index requirement of total
curvature;
- MODIFY the shape requirements of the bright steel end;
- CANCEL the marking example;
- ADD the process performance requirements of bright steel;
- ADD the roughness requirements;
- MODIFY the packaging requirements; ADD specific requirements for
transportation and storage.
This standard was proposed by the China Iron and Steel Association.
This standard shall be under the jurisdiction of the National Steel
Standardization Technical Committee.

Bright steel
1 Scope
This standard specifies the terms and definitions, classification code, size,
shape, weight and allowable deviations, technical requirements, test methods,
inspection rules, marks and quality certificates, packaging, transportation and
storage requirements of bright steel.
This standard is applicable to stripped, ground and polished round steel with
high requirements for surface quality.
2 Normative references
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard
through reference in this Standard. For the dated references, the subsequent
amendments (excluding corrections) or revisions do not apply to this Standard;
however, parties who reach an agreement based on this Standard are
encouraged to study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable.
For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document applies.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this standard.
3.1
Bright steel
A bright-surface round steel with no rolling defects and decarburized layer
on the surface. It can be subdivided into flake steel, polish steel, buff steel.
3.2
Flake steel
Round steel as straightened after removing the rolling defects and
decarburized layer by turning and peeling.
4 Classification code
Bright steel is divided into three categories according to the final cold working
method. The classification code is as shown in Table 1.
5 Size, shape, weight and allowable deviation
5.1 The cross-sectional shape and marking symbols are as shown in Figure 1.
5.2 The nominal diameter, reference cross-sectional area and reference weight
of bright steel are as listed in Table 2 (diameter not greater than 12 mm) and
Table 3 (diameter greater than 12 mm).
5.3 According to the request of the buyer and indicated in the contract, bright
steel of intermediate size can be supplied, but it is not recommended to use
intermediate size.
5.4 Allowable diameter deviation
5.4.1 The allowable deviation of the diameter of bright steel shall meet the
requirements of Table 4.The allowable deviation level of diameter shall be as
specified in the contract or specified in the corresponding product standard. If
not specified, those with a diameter not more than 80 mm shall be supplied
according to level 11 of this standard; those with a diameter of more than 80
mm shall be supplied according to level 12 of this standard.
5.6 Outline
5.6.1 Bright steel is usually delivered in straight bars. After negotiation between
the two parties, bright steel can be delivered in coiled state.
5.6.2 The straightness of the straight bright steel shall meet the requirements
of Table 6.
5.6.3 The end of the bright steel shall be cut straight and there shall be no radial
burr, but axial burr of not more than 1 mm are allowed.
6 Technical requirements
6.1 Designation and chemical composition
The designation and chemical composition of bright steel shall meet the
requirements of the corresponding technical standards.
6.2 Delivery status
6.3 Mechanical properties and process properties
The mechanical properties of the bright steel (excluding the properties of the
heat treatment of the specimen) and the process properties are allowed to
fluctuate by ±10% from the corresponding technical standards.
6.4 Macrostructure
The macrostructure of bright steel shall meet the requirements of the
corresponding technical standards.
6.5 Microstructure
6.6 Surface quality
6.6.1 The surface of the bright steel shall be clean and smooth; there shall be
no external defects such as cracks, hair lines, folds, scratches, concave
surfaces, scars, rust and oxide scale. It allows the presence of individual slight
scratch, straightened and stripped thread mark which has a depth of not more
than half of tolerance. The bright steel after heat treatment is allowed to have
oxidation color.
7 Test method
7.1 The size and shape of the bright steel shall be measured with a measuring
tool with appropriate accuracy.
7.2 The chemical composition, mechanical properties, process performance,
macrostructure, microstructure of bright steel shall be tested according to the
test methods specified in the corresponding product standards.
8 Inspection rules
The surface quality, size, shape and allowable deviation of bright steel shall be
inspected one by one.
9 Marking and quality certificate
The bright steel’s mark and quality certificate shall comply with the requirements
of GB/T 2101 or GB/T 2103.
10 Packaging, transportation and storage
10.1 Bright steel shall be packaged in anti-rust packaging; it shall follow the
specific requirements of GB/T 2103 and GB/T 2101.
