Bursting Disc Safety Devices for Gas Cylinders
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the terms and definitions, materials, design, manufacturing
requirements, and test methods, inspection rules, marking, identification, packaging,
transportation and storage, exit-factory documents and usage requirements for bursting disc
safety devices for gas cylinders.
This Standard is applicable to bursting disc safety devices for gas cylinders of various structures,
filled with compressed gases, high (low) pressure liquefied gases, low-temperature liquefied
gases, adsorbed gases and liquids with a standard boiling point equal to or lower than 60 C,
and mixed gases (two or more gases).

3 Terms and Definitions
The following terms and definitions are applicable to this document.
3.1 bursting disc safety device
A non-reclosing pressure relief device composed of a bursting disc (or bursting disc assembly)
and a holder (or support ring). At the set bursting temperature, when the pressure difference on
both sides of the bursting disc reaches a pre-determined value, the bursting disc will
immediately act (rupture or fall off) and release the fluid medium.
3.2 bursting disc
In the bursting disc safety device, a pressure-sensitive component that quickly acts due to
overpressure.
During the bursting test of the bursting disc, the actual bursting pressure value at the moment
of bursting.
3.13 bursting temperature
When the bursting disc reaches the bursting pressure, the temperature of the diaphragm wall of
the bursting disc.
3.14 performance tolerance
The maximum allowable deviation of the actual test bursting pressure of the bursting disc
relative to the specified bursting pressure, that is, the ratio of the difference between the test
bursting pressure and the specified bursting pressure to the specified bursting pressure.
3.15 batch
A group of bursting discs with the same category, type, specifications, specified bursting
pressure and specified bursting temperature, and with identical materials (designation, batch
No. and specifications) and manufacturing process is considered as one batch.
3.16 cylinder test pressure
The hydraulic test pressure of gas cylinders. For gas cylinders undergoing air pressure test, it
refers to the pressure of air pressure test.
4 Materials
4.1 The materials used for the bursting discs shall have good corrosion resistance, uniform and
stable mechanical properties and thermal stability.
4.2 The maximum and minimum allowable operating temperatures of metals, non-metals and
coating (plating) materials used on the bursting discs shall comply with the stipulations of GB/T
567.1.
4.3 The materials used for components, such as: bursting discs, bursting disc holder rings and
screw plugs shall comply with the stipulations of corresponding national standards or industry
standards, and shall have quality certification documents (including quality certificates and
certificates of conformity) provided by the material manufacturing organization.
4.4 The materials used for bursting discs shall be re-inspected in accordance with the
stipulations of the corresponding material standards and design drawings, and can only be used
after reaching the requirements.
4.5 When the medium is corrosive to the materials of the bursting disc safety device, anti-
corrosion treatment measures, such as: corrosion-resistant protective film or coating (plating)
layer shall be adopted. The anti-corrosion treatment shall satisfy the following requirements:
a) When using an anti-corrosion protective film, it shall be ensured that the protective
film is airtight and provided in a set or as a whole with the bursting disc safety device;
b) The anti-corrosion measures shall be completed in the bursting disc safety device
manufacturing organization, and the measures cannot affect the design performance
indicators of the bursting disc safety device;
c) The anti-corrosion treatment shall be carried out before the performance inspection
of the bursting disc safety device.
5 Design
5.1 Specified Bursting Temperature and Specified Bursting Pressure
5.1.1 The specified bursting temperature of the bursting discs shall be the upper limit of the
ambient service temperature specified in the corresponding gas cylinder standards.
5.1.2 The specified bursting pressure of the bursting discs shall be determined in accordance
with the cylinder test pressure. For bursting discs used for refillable gas cylinders, it shall
generally not be greater than the cylinder test pressure; for bursting discs used for non-refillable
gas cylinders, it shall comply with the corresponding stipulations of GB/T 17268.
5.2 Performance Tolerance
The performance tolerance shall satisfy the stipulations of the corresponding gas cylinder
standards. If it is not specified in the gas cylinder standards, for bursting discs used for refillable
gas cylinders, the performance tolerance is 5%, and the lower limit of the specified bursting
pressure shall not be less than 1.05 times the temperature rise pressure of the gas cylinders; for
bursting discs used for non-refillable gas cylinders, the performance tolerance is 10%.
5.3 Clamping Elements
5.3.1 General requirements
The clamping elements shall be designed, manufactured and used in conjunction with the
bursting discs. When replacement is required, the bursting discs and clamping elements of the
original manufacturing organization shall be replaced as a set.
5.3.2 Design
The design of the clamping elements may adopt the following methods:
a) Design methods established through experience in similar projects;
b) Carry out pressure-bearing capacity test verification, and a pressure test at 1.5 times
the cylinder test pressure.
6 Manufacturing Requirements and Test Methods
6.1 Material Verification
From the same batch of materials, cut out at least three raw discs for test, process them into
ordinary conventional domed bursting discs, and conduct the bursting test. The performance
tolerance shall not exceed 2%.
6.2 Batch Size
The bursting discs shall be produced in batches, with the quantity of each batch not exceeding
3,000 PCS.
6.3 Assembly
6.3.1 All components shall be assembled in batches after passing the inspection.
6.3.2 For replaceable components, trial installation shall be carried out in accordance with the
requirements of the drawings, and spare parts shall be used in conjunction with the
corresponding batch of products.
6.3.3 The assembly of bursting disc safety devices (provided in sets) with non-replaceable
components shall satisfy the following requirements:
a) The various components (bursting disc, bursting disc holder ring and screw plug, etc.)
shall be connected by welding, riveting, threading and cementing, etc.;
b) The connection materials, such as: welding materials and adhesives, etc., shall be
compatible with the materials of the connecting parts, and shall satisfy the usage
requirements;
c) The connection shall have reliable sealing performance and pressure-bearing capacity;
d) When the method of welding is used for connecting, the welding process shall be
completed by welding personnel with corresponding qualifications; the welding
process qualification of pressure-bearing welds shall be carried out in accordance with
the requirements of corresponding standards;
e) They shall be assembled into a whole, and be allowed to exit the factory after passing
the inspections and tests.
6.4 Test Methods
6.4.1 Appearance inspection
The requirements for appearance inspection are as follows:
a) Visually inspect or use a 3x to 5x magnifying glass to inspect the inner and outer
safety protection devices shall be installed;
b) When measuring the bursting pressure, the test bursting temperature shall also be
measured at the same time;
c) During the sampling bursting test of reverse domed bursting disc, the pressure-
bearing side of the bursting disc shall have sufficient gas phase space volume, so as
to ensure that the bursting disc flips over and ruptures.
6.4.2.6 Pressure measuring instrument
The installation position, quantity, accuracy and measuring range of the pressure measuring
instruments in the test system shall satisfy the following requirements:
a) The test system shall be equipped with at least three pressure measuring instruments,
two of which are used to measure the bursting pressure and shall be set as close to the
test bursting disc as possible; the other is used to indicate the pressure of the test
system and shall be set in a visible part of the pressure source outlet;
b) The accuracy of the bursting pressure measuring instruments shall not be lower than
Level 1.0;
c) The measuring range of the measuring instruments shall be 1.5 ~ 3.0 times the
specified bursting pressure;
d) The measuring instruments shall be within the calibration cycle, which shall not
exceed 6 months.
6.4.2.7 Bursting test temperature
The requirements for the bursting test temperature are as follows:
a) The temperature measuring instrument shall be within the calibration period, which
shall not exceed 6 months;
b) The resolution of the temperature measuring instrument shall not be lower than 1.0
C;
c) When measuring temperature, the temperature of the measuring point shall be able to
reflect the wall temperature of the bursting disc;
d) When performing bursting tests at high (low) temperatures, the temperature rise (fall)
rate shall be slow. After reaching the specified bursting temperature, the temperature
shall be kept for at least 10 minutes, so as to make the wall temperature of the bursting
disc uniform. The temperature deviation of the test medium shall be controlled within
the range of 10 C;
e) The bursting test shall be carried out at the specified bursting temperature.
6.4.2.8 Pressure increase rate for bursting test
During the bursting test, the inlet pressure of the test device shall be raised to 90% of the
minimum bursting pressure. The pressure increase rate should be such that the minimum
indication value of the pressure gauge can be accurately read; the pressure holding time shall
be no less than 5 seconds. Afterwards, steadily and continuously increase the pressure. When
increasing the pressure, the minimum indication value of the pressure gauge shall be accurately
read, and the pressure increase rate per second shall not be less than 0.1% of the bursting
pressure, until the bursting disc bursts. This process shall not exceed 2 minutes.
6.4.2.9 Determination of test conclusions
When the measured bursting pressure values of the sampling bursting test of the same batch of
bursting discs all satisfy the requirements for the performance tolerance, the bursting test result
of this batch of bursting discs shall be determined as qualified. Otherwise, it shall be determined
as disqualified.
6.4.2.10 Bursting test report
The bursting test report shall at least include the following contents:
a) Test date, bursting disc model, production batch No. and batch size, etc.;
b) Information of the test bursting disc device: including the basic structure of the
bursting disc, relief diameter of the bursting disc holder ring, material of the bursting
disc, the specified bursting pressure, specified bursting temperature and performance
tolerance, etc.;
c) Test conditions and test methods: including the quantity of sampled bursting discs,
test medium, medium temperature and ambient temperature, test device and
equipment, test instruments, etc., as well as test method and process;
d) Test results: including test bursting pressure, test bursting temperature, bursting
pressure deviation and test conclusions, etc.;
e) Signature of tester and auditor.
6.4.3 Sealing performance test
All bursting disc safety devices provided in complete sets must undergo sealing performance
test before exiting the factory. The test medium for the sealing performance test is air or nitrogen,
and the test pressure is the nominal working pressure of the gas cylinder. During the test,
increase the pressure of the bursting disc safety device to the test pressure and immerse it in the
test water tank. The pressure holding time is at least 3 minutes. If there is no leakage, it shall be
determined as qualified.
6.4.4 Discharge test
c) Name or code of the manufacturing organization.
9 Packaging, Transportation and Storage
9.1 Packaging
9.1.1 The bursting disc safety device and its accessories shall be properly packed.
9.1.2 Bursting disc products shall be equipped with special-purpose packaging boxes (cases),
which can be packed individually or in bulk.
9.1.3 When packaging, the packaging box (case) and bursting disc shall be dry and clean, and
the bursting disc shall be prevented from moving and causing any damage that affects the
bursting performance.
9.1.4 The outer surface of each packaging box (case) shall at least be marked with the following
contents:
a) Batch No.;
b) Nominal diameter of the discharge outlet, expressed in (mm);
c) Manufacturing organization’s name or code.
9.2 Transportation and Storage
9.2.1 Bursting disc products shall be packaged and pass the inspection before being transported.
During transportation and handling, collision, impact, moisture and contamination shall be
avoided.
9.2.2 Bursting disc products shall be stored in the original packaging box (case), with the front
side facing up, and kept dry, so as to prevent environmental corrosion. The storage room shall
be kept clean and ventilated.
10 Exit-factory Documents
10.1 The manufacturing organization shall provide the using organization with complete
instructions and quality certification documents regarding the assembly, installation, use and
maintenance of the bursting disc safety device.
10.2 Each batch of bursting disc products shall have at least the following documents:
a) Product quality certificate;
b) Product certificate of conformity;
c) Product installation and operation instructions.
10.3 The product quality certificate shall at least include the following contents:
a) Name and batch No.;
b) Product model or type code;
c) Manufacturing (batch) quantity;
d) Nominal diameter of the discharge outlet;
e) Material designation;
f) Applicable medium and temperature;
g) Specified bursting pressure;
h) Performance tolerance;
i) Specified bursting temperature;
j) Manufacturing standard No.;
k) Qualification mark and signature of the inspector;
l) Manufacturing organization’s name or code, with the organization’s official seal or
special inspection seal;
m) Special equipment manufacturing license No. and license level;
n) Date of manufacture.
10.4 The certificate of conformity of bursting disc products shall at least contain the product
name, batch No., product model or type code, manufacturing organization’s name or code,
manufacturing standard, special equipment manufacturing license No. and license level, etc.
The content of the certificate of conformity of bursting disc products shall be consistent with
the content of the quality certificate of this batch of bursting discs.
11 Requirements for Use
See Appendix A for the requirements for the use of the bursting disc safety devices.
Appendix B
(normative)
Fatigue Test of Bursting Discs for Gas Cylinders
B.1 Test Device
B.1.1 The test device shall have the function of adjusting and controlling circulating pressure,
circulating frequency, pressure holding time and continuous pressure circulation.
B.1.2 The test device shall be able to automatically record the number of pressure circulations,
indicate and control the temperature of the test medium, and output the pressure circulation
curve.
B.1.3 When the test medium is liquid, the air in the test system shall be able to be completely
discharged.
B.1.4 The pressure-bearing pipelines and their accessories shall pass the pressure test. The
pressure of the pressure test shall not be lower than 2.0 times the maximum allowable working
pressure of the test device. The pressure holding time of the pressure test shall not be less than
3 minutes.
B.1.5 At least two pressure measuring instruments that can simultaneously and correctly display
the circulating pressure shall be installed on the test device. The accuracy level of the pressure
measuring instruments shall not be lower than Level 1.0, and the measuring range shall be 2.0
~ 3.0 times the circulating pressure of the bursting discs under test. The pressure measuring
instruments shall be within the calibration cycle, which shall not exceed 6 months.
B.2 Test Method
B.2.1 Circulating pressure
B.2.1.1 The upper limit of the circulating pressure of the fatigue test can be 80% of the specified
bursting pressure of the bursting discs under test.
B.2.1.2 The lower limit of the circulating pressure shall not exceed 10% of the upper limit of
the circulating pressure.
B.2.2 Pressure circulating frequency
The pressure circulating frequency is 3 times/min ~ 8 times/min.
Throughout the fatigue test process, the pressure increase - pressure holding - pressure decrease
time curve shall remain basically the same, and the holding time of the upper limit of the
circulating pressure shall not be less than one-third of the time of one pressure circulation.
