Announcement of the Ministry of Construction on Publishing the National
Standard "Code for Design of Gas Transmission Pipeline Engineering"
"Code for Design of Gas Transmission Pipeline Engineering" has been approved as a national
standard with a serial number of GB 50251-2003, and this national standard will be implemented on
October 1, 2003. Therein, Article (Item) 3.2.8, 3.4.1, 3.4.3, 3.4.4, 3.4.6, 4.2.3, 4.2.4, 4.6.1, 5.1.2 (1),
6.4.4, 7.2.1 (4), 7 .2.2 (6) are compulsory provisions and must be enforced strictly.
Authorized by the Standard and Ration Institute of the Ministry of Construction, this code is
published and distributed by China Planning Publishing House.

Foreword
According to the requirements of Document Jian Biao [200 1] No. 87 issued by the Ministry of
Construction (MOC)-"Notice on Printing the Development and Revision Plan of National
Engineering Construction Standards from 2000 to 2001 ", Southwest China Branch of China Petroleum
Group En~ineering Design Co. Ltd. (Sichuan Petroleum Reconnaissance Design Institute) is
responsible for the overall revision of national standard "Code for Design of Gas Transmission
Pipeline Engineering" GB 50251-94.
This revision was modified ru.Jd finalized on the base of held many conferences to discuss
collected performance on original code of all concemed, and made reference to relevant international
standards. Not only tried and true provisions in original code is reserved in this code, but also added
Article 4.5 "Pipeline Structure", A1iicle 10.3 "Desiccation", Chapter 7 "Ground Environment of
Underground Natural Gas Storage" and Chapter 11 "Energy Saving, Environmental Protection, Labor
Safety and Hygiene" in this code, in order to enrich and enhance original code.
The Ministry of Construction is in charge of the explanation of the compulsory provisions of this
code; Subcommittee on Design of National Technical Committee on Petroleum Engineering
Construction of Standardization Administration of China is in charge of the administration of this
code; Southwest China Branch of China Petroleum Group Engineering Design Co. Ltd. is in charge of
the explanation of the specific technical contents. All relevant organizations are kindly requested to
sum up and accumulate your experiences in actual practices during the process of implementing this

1 General Provisions
1.0.1 This code is formulated with a view to follow out relevant national technical and economic
policies in design of gas transmission pipeline engineering, unified specification, and realize state-of-
art technology, economic feasibi lity, safety and usability, guaranteed quality.
1.0.2 This code is app licable to design 0f overland gas transmission pipeline engineering.
1.0.3 Design of gas transmission pipeline engineering shall be in compliance with the following
principles.
1 Environment protection. energy conservation and land conservation; manage the interrelation
of railway, highway and river all right;
2 Adopt advanced techniques and made efforts to absorb new scientific and technological
achievements in both China and abroad;
3 Optimize design proposal, determine the economic feasibility of gas transmission technology
and optimal technological parameter.
1.0.4 Design of gas transmission pipeline engineering, not only the requ irements stipulated in this
code but also those in the current relevant ones of the nation shall be complied with.
