Determination of breaking strength and elongation at break
of nonwoven fabrics
This standard equivalently adopts international standard ISO 9703-3-1989 "Textiles -
Test method of nonwoven fabrics - Part 3: Determination of tensile strength and
elongation".
1 Subject content and scope of application
This standard specifies the methods for the determination of breaking strength and
elongation at break of nonwoven fabrics.
This standard applies to all kinds of nonwoven fabrics.
2 Normative references
GB 3923 Determination of breaking strength and elongation at break of woven
fabrics (strip method)
GB 6529 Standard atmosphere for humidity conditioning and testing of textiles
GB 8170 Numerical rounding off rules
3 Principles
For a specimen of specified size, stretch it along the length of the specimen until it
breaks; record the breaking force and elongation at break.
4 Instruments and appliances
4.1 Tensile tester: Two types of tensile tester: CRT (constant velocity traction) or CRE
(constant velocity extension), can be used. The tensile tester should meet the relevant
requirements in GB 3923. When using a CRT type instrument, the use range shall be
between 20% ~ 80% of the full scale. For referee tests or in case of disputes, the CRE
type shall prevail.
4.2 For the wet test, there shall be equipment capable of immersing the specimen in
water, as well as distilled water or deionized water.
4.3 Scissors and steel ruler.
5 Samples
5.1 Take specimens according to relevant product standards or agreements of relevant
parties. OR cut 1 m sample for each type.
5.2 The sample is required to be representative, to ensure that the specimen taken has
no obvious flaws, such as cracks and wrinkles, that affect the test results.
6 Preparation of specimens
6.1 Cut the specimen at least 100 mm away from the edge of the cloth, according to the
parallel method specified in Appendix B of GB 3923. Use the trapezoidal method, to
cut the specimen for the arbitration test.
6.2 Cut more than 5 specimens, each in the longitudinal direction (machine output
direction) and transverse direction (cloth width direction) of the sample; make the
length direction of the specimens parallel to the longitudinal direction (machine output
direction) and transverse direction (cloth width direction).
6.3 The width of the specimen is 50 ± 0.5 mm. The length shall meet the nominal
clamping distance of 200 mm.
7 Humidity conditioning and standard atmosphere of
specimen
7.1 The pre-humidity conditioning of the specimens shall be carried out according to
the provisions in Chapter 3 of GB 6529. The humidity conditioning shall be carried out,
in accordance with Chapter 4 or equilibrated in the specified standard atmosphere for
more than 24 hours.
7.2 The test is carried out in the standard atmosphere, which is stipulated in GB 6529;
the arbitration test adopts the first-grade standard atmosphere.
7.3 If it is required to carry out the wet test, it is not necessary to carry out humidity
conditioning; soak the specimen in the solution containing 1% wetting agent.
8 Test steps
8.1 Calibrate the zero position of the strength testing machine.
8.2 Adjust the nominal clamping distance of the strength testing machine to 200 ± 1
mm, the tensile speed to 100 ± 10 mm/min.
