1 Scope

This document describes a method for the determination of the alkalinity of concentrated natural rubber latex. This document applies to concentrated natural rubber latex derived from the Hevea brasiliensis tree. This document does not necessarily apply to natural latex from sources other than Hevea brasiliensis, nor does it necessarily apply to synthetic latex, compound latex, latex, vulcanized latex and emulsified latex. NOTE. ISO 13773 describes the method for determining the alkalinity of chloroprene rubber latex.

4 Principle

In the presence of a stabilizer to prevent the latex from coagulating, the concentrated natural latex is titrated potentiometrically or with methyl red as a visual indicator. The acid was titrated to pH 6.The alkalinity of the latex was calculated from the amount of acid consumed.

5 Reagents

Use only confirmed analytical grade reagents and distilled water or water of equivalent purity. 5.1 Stabilizer solution, 5% by mass of alkylphenol polyoxyethylene condensate non-ionic stabilizer solution. The pH was adjusted to 6.00 ± 0.05. 5.2 Sulfuric acid (CAS7664-93-9) standard titration solution, c(H2SO4) = 0.05 mol/L, or hydrochloric acid (CAS7647-01-0) standard titration solution The solution was fixed, c(HCl)=0.1mol/L, and was calibrated according to GB/T 601. 5.3 Methyl red (CAS 493-52-7), 0.1% solution in ethanol (CAS 64-17-5), the purity of the ethanol being at least 95% (volume fraction).
