Technical specifications of methanol automobile fuel
system
1 Scope
This document specifies the terms and definitions, technical requirements, test
methods of methanol automobile fuel system.
This document applies to vehicles, which are equipped with methanol single-
fuel engines or diesel/methanol dual-fuel engines.
2 Normative references
The contents of the following documents constitute the indispensable clauses
of this document through normative references in the text. Among them, for
dated reference documents, only the version corresponding to that date is
applicable to this document; for undated reference documents, the latest
version (including all amendments) is applicable to this document.

4.2.1 The methanol automobile fuel system shall be manufactured, in
accordance with the product drawings and other technical documents, which
are approved by the prescribed procedures. The safety protection of the fuel
system shall meet the requirements of GB 7258.
4.2.2 All electrical components, in the methanol automobile fuel system, shall
meet the requirements of QC/T 413.
4.2.3 All parts of the methanol automobile fuel system, in contact with methanol,
shall be resistant to methanol corrosion and swelling. Rubber parts shall comply
with the requirements of GB/T 1690; plastic parts shall comply with the
requirements of GB/T 11547; metal parts shall comply with the requirements of
GB/T 4334. Use the M100 automobile methanol fuel, to carry out 120 h
immersion test, at the test temperature of 40 °C ± 2 °C; the mass change rate
of the specimen, before and after immersion, shall not exceed 5%; the volume
change rate shall not exceed 15%; the mechanical properties change shall not
exceed 10%.
4.2.4 The methanol box shall have the function of pressure regulating and
control.
4.2.5 The working environment temperature shall meet the following
requirements:
a) Parts installed in the engine compartment: -40 °C ~ 120 °C;
b) Parts installed in other parts: -40 °C ~ 85 °C.
4.2.6 The methanol automobile fuel system shall have a methanol evaporation
control device.
4.2.7 There shall be obvious warning signs, at the methanol fuel filling port.
4.2.8 The design and installation of methanol automobile fuel system's pipelines
shall ensure the safety and reliability of the pipeline of whole vehicle.
4.2.9 Methanol delivery pipes and other fuel pipes shall be clearly distinguished
or marked in appearance.
4.3 System requirements
4.3.1 Technical requirements for methanol box assembly
4.3.1.1 The appearance of the metal methanol box assembly, the material of
the methanol box, the cleanliness of the interior of the methanol box, the
methanol box cover and the filling port, the safety performance of the methanol
box, shall meet the requirements of 4.2 ~ 4.4 and 4.6 ~ 4.7 in QC/T 644-2014.
4.3.1.2 The performance of the plastic methanol box assembly shall be
implemented in accordance with the provisions of GB 18296.
4.3.1.3 The methanol box assembly shall be equipped with a fuel evaporation
exhaust port, which shall be located above the methanol liquid level, when the
rated capacity of the methanol box is reached. The methanol vapor shall be
able to exit the methanol box, through the evaporation exhaust port.
4.3.2 Technical requirements for methanol level sensor
4.3.2.1 Normal working environment of methanol level sensor, appearance,
state of movable part, basic error, insulation pressure resistance, resistance to
temperature change, temperature influence, humidity resistance and resistance
to cyclic humidity change, vibration resistance, durability, airtightness shall
meet the requirements of 4.2 ~ 4.10 and 4.12 in QC/T 823-2009.
4.3.2.2 The methanol level sensor shall be able to withstand methanol
immersion. After testing in accordance with the provisions of 5.1, the metal parts
and non-metal parts of the sensor shall meet the requirements of 4.2.3; the
functions shall meet the requirements of 4.3 and 4.4 of QC/T 823-2009.
4.3.3 Technical requirements for methanol pump
4.3.3.1 The flow rate shall be able to meet the requirements of the maximum
fuel consumption of the engine.
4.3.3.2 The methanol pump shall be marked with the flow direction of the
methanol in and out.
4.3.3.3 The allowable medium of the methanol pump shall meet the
requirements of M100 automobile methanol fuel.
4.3.3.4 Appearance, surface protection, materials shall meet the following
requirements:
a) The methanol pump shall have no obvious damage, cracks, shrinkage,
deformation, corrosion, or other defects, that affect the working
performance; the plastic components shall have no obvious color
difference;
b) The electroplated parts or chemically treated parts shall comply with the
provisions of 5.2 in QC/T 625-2013; there shall be no red rust after the
96h neutral salt spray test.
4.3.3.5 The working voltage shall meet the following requirements:
a) Nominal voltage: 12V, range 8V ~ 16V;
After processing in accordance with the provisions of 5.3.1, the initial burst
pressure of high-pressure pipelines, such as oil supply and return pipe, shall
not be less than 5 MPa. The initial burst pressure of low-pressure pipelines,
such as ventilation and refueling pipes, shall not be less than 0.35 MPa.
4.3.5.3 Initial bonding strength of methanol delivery pipe
After processing as specified in 5.3.2, the initial bonding strength between
adjacent adhesive layers shall not be less than 1.5 N/mm.
4.3.5.4 Vacuum resistance of methanol delivery pipe
When tested according to the requirements of 5.3.3, the vacuum degree shall
meet the requirements of Table 1 in 5.3.3; the pressure holding time shall be
within the range of 15 s ~ 60 s; the steel ball of the specified diameter can pass
freely.
4.3.5.5 Low temperature performance of methanol delivery pipe
After treatment in accordance with the provisions of 5.3.4, the inner and outer
walls of the methanol delivery hose shall be free of cracks AND meet the
requirements of 4.3.5.2.
4.3.5.6 High temperature resistance of methanol delivery pipe - M100 methanol
- ozone performance
After testing in accordance with the provisions of 5.3.5, use a 2x magnifying
glass, to check the appearance of the methanol delivery pipe; there shall be no
cracks.
4.3.5.7 Heat aging resistance of methanol delivery pipe
After testing in accordance with 5.3.6, there shall be no cracks or separation of
the inner and outer layers of the methanol delivery pipe.
4.3.5.8 Methanol permeation resistance of methanol delivery pipe
Carry out the test in accordance with 5.3.7. The permeation value of the high-
pressure pipelines, such as the oil supply and return pipes, of the methanol
delivery pipe shall not be greater than 15g/ (m2 • 24h); the permeation value of
the low-pressure pipelines, such as ventilation and refueling pipes, shall not be
greater than 5g/ (m2 • 24h).
4.3.5.9 Conductivity of methanol delivery pipeline
The test is carried out at a voltage of 550 V ± 50 V, in accordance with the
provisions of 5.3.8. It is required that the resistivity of the methanol delivery
hose shall not be greater than 10 Ω • m.
4.3.5.10 Methanol resistance of methanol delivery pipeline
After the test in accordance with 5.3.9, the burst pressure of the high-pressure
pipelines, such as the oil supply and return pipes, of the methanol delivery pipe
shall not be less than 3.5 MPa; the burst pressure of the low-pressure pipelines,
such as ventilation and refueling pipes, shall not be less than 0.3 MPa,
meanwhile they shall meet the requirements of 4.3.5.3, 4.3.5.5, 4.3.5.6.
4.3.6 Technical requirements for methanol rail
The performance of the methanol rail shall meet the requirements of GB/T
25366. The methanol resistance shall meet the requirements of 4.2.3.
4.3.7 Technical requirements for methanol injector
The performance of the methanol injector shall meet the requirements of GB/T
25367. The methanol resistance shall meet the requirements of 4.2.3.
4.3.8 Technical requirements for methanol pipe joints
4.3.8.1 Basic requirements
When metal joints are used for methanol pipe joints, the basic requirements
shall be implemented in accordance with the relevant national standards; the
methanol corrosion resistance shall be implemented in accordance with the
provisions of 4.2.3. When using a plastic quick-plug connector for methanol
pipe joints, follow the provisions of 4.3.8.2 ~ 4.3.8.10 of this document.
4.3.8.2 Low pressure leakage of methanol pipe joint
Carry out the test in accordance with the provisions of 5.4.1; the maximum
leakage, in the standard volume under the steady state, shall be 2 cm3/min.
4.3.8.3 High pressure leakage of methanol pipe joints
Carry out the test in accordance with the provisions of 5.4.2. The maximum
leakage, in the standard volume under the steady state, shall be 5 cm3/min.
4.3.8.4 Vacuum leakage of methanol pipe joints
Carry out the test in accordance with the provisions of 5.4.3. The maximum
leakage, in the standard volume under the steady state, shall be 2 cm3/min.
4.3.8.5 Assembly force requirements for methanol pipe joints
After the test in accordance with 5.4.4, the maximum assembly force of the
methanol pipe joint for the first time shall not be greater than 111N; after the test
in accordance with 4.3.8.8 and 4.3.8.9, the maximum assembly force shall not

5.3.5.2 Ozone test
Cut a 25 mm x 150 mm test piece longitudinally, from the outermost layer of the
rubber hose. Test it in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 7762. The test
steps are as follows:
a) After the test piece is installed, place it in an ozone-free place, at room
temperature, for 24h; then place it in an ozone box, which has an ozone
volume fraction of 100 x 10-8 ± 5 x 10-8 AND a temperature of 38 °C ± 1 °C;
b) After 2 weeks, take the test piece out of the ozone box. Use a 2x
magnifying glass to check the appearance, after cooling at room
temperature. The proximity to the device may be exempted of inspection.
5.3.6 Heat aging resistance test of methanol delivery pipe
Place the finished hose, in an air aging box, which has a temperature of 125 °C
± 2 °C, for 1h. Take out the hose. Use short nylon or metal rods, to plug it at
both ends. Place it again at the temperature specified above for 700h. Take out
the hose. Unplug it. Cool it for 2h, at room temperature. Bend 180° for 3 times,
within 4s. Check the appearance.
5.3.7 Methanol permeation resistance test of methanol delivery pipe
The test temperature shall be 40 °C ± 2 °C. The test pressure shall be 14.5 kPa.
The test fuel shall be M100 methanol. The sample is pretreated at 40 °C ± 2 °C
for 664h; the methanol is replaced every 168h. Then carry out the permeation
test immediately, for no less than 336h. For equipment requirements and test
methods, refer to the provisions in Appendix A of QC/T 798-2008. The test shall
be carried out on 3 specimens. Take the intermediate value of the 3 measured
values as the result.
5.3.8 Conductivity test of methanol delivery pipe
Insert both ends of the 610 mm long hose into the stopper. Use a pipe clamp to
fix it. Place it for 10 minutes, before proceeding with the test. Install an
ohmmeter at each end. Place the parts on the insulating surface. Measure the
overall length of the hose, as well as the electrical resistivity between the pipe
clamps. The measurement voltage shall be 550V ± 50V
5.3.9 Methanol resistance test of methanol delivery pipe
Choose M100 methanol and test 1000h at 23 °C ± 2 °C. The detailed test
methods and requirements shall be implemented in accordance with the item
m) of part 5 in GB/T 24141.2-2009.
5.4 Test method for methanol pipe joints
5.4.1 Low pressure leakage performance test of methanol pipe joint
Connect the joint, in a simulated loading state, to the pipeline, at 23 °C ± 2 °C.
Fix the connected pipeline assembly on a special device. Seal one end. Use a
pressurizing device to increase the pressure of the other section to 69 kPa ± 7
kPa. Measure the leakage in a steady state.
5.4.2 High pressure leakage performance test of methanol pipe joint
Connect the joint, in a simulated loading state, to the pipeline, at 23 °C ± 2 °C.
Fix the connected pipeline assembly on a special device. Seal one end. Use a
pressurizing device to increase the pressure of the other section to 1034 kPa ±
35 kPa. Measure the leakage in a steady state. During the high pressure test,
it may add appropriate safety device.
5.4.3 Vacuum leakage performance test of methanol pipe joint
Connect the joint, in a simulated loading state, to the pipeline, at 23 °C ± 2 °C.
Fix the connected pipeline assembly on a special device. Seal one end. Apply
a 7 kPa vacuum to the other section. Measure the leakage in a steady state.
5.4.4 Assembly force test of methanol pipe joint
Assemble the joint, in a simulated loading state, to the fixture, at 23 °C ± 2 °C.
It shall carry out the assembly, at a rate of 51 mm/min ± 5 mm/min. Test the
maximum external force, which is required for the test joint to be fully assembled
to the quick-plug joint.
5.4.5 Pull-out force test of methanol pipe joint
Assemble the joint, in a simulated loading state, to the fixture, at 23 °C ± 2 °C.
Appropriately fix the end of the quick-plug joint, which is assembled with the
pipe, to facilitate the axial extension of the quick-plug joint. Apply the extension
load, at 51 mm/min ± 5 mm/min. Measure the load value, which is required to
completely separate the quick-plug joint, at the connection.
5.4.6 Edge load test of methanol pipe joint
Insert the quick-plug joint into the pre-prepared elbow or hose, which has one
end sealed, at 23 °C ± 2 °C. Fix it to the testing equipment. Use a pressurizing
device, to pressurize to 1034 kPa ± 35 kPa. At the same time, at 200N load,
apply the load at rate of 12.7 mm/min ± 5 mm/min. Measure the leakage in a
steady state. The value shall not be greater than 8 cm3/min, in standard volume.
Visually inspect the joint and its accessories.
