Foreword
This Standard referred to American Society of Automotive Engineers Standard
SAE J 1351.1993 “Hot odor test for insulation materials”. Technical
requirements are consistent with SAE J 1351.1993.
This Standard was proposed by China Light Industry Federation.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee
on Leather Industry of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 252).
The drafting organizations of this Standard. Zhejiang Carson Industrial Co., Ltd.,
China Leather and Footwear Industry Research Institute.
Main drafters of this Standard. Zhou Xiaosong, Xu Huaihai, Zhu Miaofeng, Shi
Jie.
This Standard shall be issued for the first time.
Leather - Determination of odor
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the determination method for the odor of leather in an
isolated environment.
This Standard is applicable to the leather with odor requirements.
2 Devices
2.1 Test cans, metal cans or glass jars, with a volume of approximately 1 L, are
odorless at room temperature and 65°C, with suitable lids which shall be easily
opened and replaced.
2.2 Oven, with air circulation system capable of maintaining temperature at
(65±3)°C.
3 Test environment
The test shall be carried out in an environment where the odor is freely
distributed, and the space for adjustment shall be as ideal as possible, but not
required.
4 Tester
The tester shall have no olfactory defects; smokers, users of heavy-scented
cosmetics, traditional scent or tobacco are not suitable as testers.
5 Sampling and sample preparation
5.1 Sampling
Cut two representative samples. The size of the sample is 125mm × 100 mm.
6 Procedures
6.1 In order to avoid pollution, it is necessary to clean the test cans (including
the lids) before the test. First, wash them with hot water, wash them with a
proper amount of laboratory detergent, then rinse them with cool-water and dry
them to keep them clean.
6.3 Place the blank contrast cans and test cans together in an oven pre-
adjusted to (65±3)°C for 1h.
6.4 Remove the blank contrast can from the oven. The first tester shall place
the head close to the blank contrast can (distance is about 15cm), remove the
lid, and then fan by hand to direct the air from the test can to the nose.
6.5 Wait 2min, repeat step 6.3 to test the wet sample.
6.6 Repeat 6.4, 6.5 steps. Test each sample.
7 Level
The level of odor shall meet the requirements of Table 1.
8 Test report
The test report shall contain the following information.
