1 General
1.0.1 This Standard is established to utilize nature sand, artificial sand, crushed stone
and gravel reasonably in ordinary concrete, so that quality of sand and stone for
ordinary concrete can be ensured.
1.0.2 This Standard is applicable to quality requirements and test of sand and stone
for ordinary concrete used in general industrial and civil buildings and structures.
1.0.3 For sand and stone used for important concrete structure in long-term
moisture environment, alkali activity test shall be required.
1.0.4 For quality requirements and test of sand and stone, besides this Standard,
specification in current national related standard shall be followed.
2 Terms and symbols
2.1 Terms
2.1.1 Natural sand
The rock particles with a nominal diameter of less than 5.00mm formed by natural
conditions. In accordance with its resource, it can be divided into river sand, sea sand
and hill sand.
2.1.2 Artificial sand
The rock particles with a nominal diameter of less than 5.00mm, formed through soil
removal and mining, mechanical crushing and screening of rock.
2.1.3 Mixed sand
The sand composed of natural sand and artificial sand in a certain proportion.
2.1.4 Crushed stone
The rock particles with a nominal diameter greater than 5.00mm, obtained by crushing
and screening natural rocks or gravels.
2.1.5 Gravel
The rock particles with a nominal diameter greater than 5.00mm formed by natural
conditions.
3 Quality requirements
3.1 Quality requirements on sand
3.1.1 In accordance with fineness modulus μf, the fineness degree of sand is divided
into four grades. coarse, intermediate, fine and super-fine. The following specification
shall be followed for their ranges.
3.1.2 Square-hole screen shall be used for sand screening. The nominal diameter of
sand, the nominal diameter of the sand screen hole and the side length of the square-
hole screen hole shall meet the requirements of Table 3.1.2-1.
3.1.3 Specification in Table 3.1.3 shall be followed for dust content in natural sand.
Table 3.1.3 -- Dust content in natural sand
For sand used in C25 and below concrete with frost-resistant, water-tight or other
special requirements, its dust content shall not exceed 3.0%.
3.1.9 For sand used in important concrete structure which is in wet environment for
long term, the alkali activity of aggregate shall be tested with mortar bar (rapid method)
or mortar length method. When it is judged as potentially hazardous through the above
test, alkali content of concrete shall not exceed 3kg/m3; or effective provisions shall be
taken to prohibit alkali-aggregate reaction.
3.2.5 The strength of crushed stone can be expressed with compressive strength of
rock or crushing value index. The compressive strength of rock shall be at least 20%
higher than strength of prepared concrete. If concrete strength grade is above or equal
to C60, test on compressive strength of rock shall be required. Preferably, rock
strength shall be provided by producing organization. In engineering, crushing value
index can be used for quality control. Specification in Table 3.2.5-1 shall be followed
for crushing value index of crushed stone.
3.2.6 The soundness of crushed stone or gravel shall be tested with sodium sulfate
solution method. After 5 times of cycling of sample, specification in Table 3.2.6 shall
be followed for its mass loss.
4 Acceptance, transportation and piling
4.0.1 Product certificate and quality test report of sand or stone shall be provided by
supplying organization.
4.0.2 At least tests on particle grading, dust content and clay lump content shall be
required for the acceptance of each batch of sand or stone. About crushed stone or
gravel, elongated and flaky particle content shall be tested. For sea sand or sand
polluted with chloride ion, test on chloride ion content shall be required. For sea sand,
test on shell content shall be required.
4.0.3 The following shall be included in quality test report of use organization.
entrusting organization, number of sample, name of engineering, resource of sample,
sort, represented quantity, test basis, test conditions, test item, test result, conclusion,
etc. Format in Annex A and Annex B can be adopted.
4.0.4 The quantity of sand and stone can be accepted in unit of mass or volume. Mass
can be determined in accordance with platform truck scale or ship water line; while
volume can be determined in accordance with volume of truck or ship. It can be
determined in accordance with measuring if other small-scale transportation tools are
used.
5 Sampling and division
5.1 Sampling
5.1.1 The following specification shall be followed for sampling method per acceptance
batch.
5.1.3 For each single test item, specification in Table 5.1.3-1 and Table 5.1.3-2 shall
be respectively followed for sampling quantity of each sample group of sand or stone.
When multiple tests are required, under the premise of ensuring that the sample does
not affect the results of other tests after one test, the same group of samples can be
used for multiple different tests.
5.2 Division of sample
5.2.1 One of both following methods can be adopted for division of sand sample.
5.2.3 For test on water content, bulk density, tight density of sand, crushed stone or
gravel, sample can be directly used for test after being mixed to even without division.
6 Test method of sand
6.1 Screen analysis test of sand
6.1.1 This method is applicable to determination of particle grading and fineness
modulus of sand for ordinary concrete.
6.1.2 The following apparatus shall be used for screen analysis test of sand.
6.1.3 The following specification shall be followed for sample preparation.
The particle nominal diameter of sample used for screen analysis shall not be larger
than 10.0mm. Prior to test, sample shall be screened with square-hole screen of
10.0mm in nominal diameter; and, screen residual is calculated. Weigh two samples
of no less than 550g after reduction and put them into two shallow trays, respectively.
Dry them to constant weight at (105±5)°C and cool to room temperature for further
use.
6.2.3 The sample preparation shall meet the following requirements.
After division, at least 650g of sample shall be put into the shallow tray and dried to
constant weight in (105±5)°C drying oven; then cooled to ambient temperature in dryer.
6.2.4 The following steps shall be followed for apparent density test with standard
method.
1 Weigh 300g (m0) of dried sample and put into volumetric flask with half flask of cool
7 Test method of stone

7.1.1 This method is applicable to determination of particle grading of crushed stone
or gravel.
7.1.4 The following steps shall be followed for screen analysis test.
1 Take sample in accordance with specification in Table 7.1.3;
2 Sample shall be screened in accordance with size sequence of screen hole. If the
thickness of screen residual on each screen is larger than the maximum particle value
of sample, the residual sample on the screen shall be divided into two parts for further
screening, until the passing quantity per minute on each screen is less than 0.1% of
total sample;
7.2 Apparent density test of crushed stone or gravel (standard method)
7.2.1 This method is applicable to determination of apparent density of crushed stone
or gravel.
7.2.2 The following apparatus shall be used in apparent density test with standard
