This document was first published in.1999 and this is the first revision. Chemical etching inspection of surface temper after gear grinding 1 Scope This document specifies the operations and requirements for detecting and classifying localized overheating of grinding surfaces using chemical etching methods. The detection method described in this document is mainly used for gear grinding surfaces. It can also be used for machining after heat treatment (such as hard turning, milling, deburring). Abnormal surfaces formed by thorns, chamfers, etc.). The detection of surface metallographic changes caused by carburization and decarburization can be used as a reference. The method described in this document is more sensitive to hardness changes than most surface hardness testing methods. Some previous testing methods This document is no longer recommended. This document applies to quenched steel parts such as gears, shafts, splines and bearings. It does not apply to nitrided parts and stainless steel parts. Note. This method is sometimes called "nitric acid corrosion", but it should not be confused with "nitric acid corrosion" in other methods. The surface tempering etching process is used after surface grinding and before final finishing (such as super finishing, shot peening and honing). 2 Normative reference documents This document has no normative references. 3 Terms and definitions There are no terms or definitions to be defined in this document. 4 Equipment and requirements 4.1 Container materials It should not react with the solution contained and will not damage the parts being tested. All containers should be labeled with the contents of the solution and should be covered when not in use. good. Container markings should comply with relevant regulations. 4.2 Inspection area There should be adequate lighting without shadows and reflections. The light intensity should not be less than 2200lx (≈200 foot candles). 4.3 Cleaning device Cleaning methods should use alkali cleaning, steam degreasing, etc., or corresponding processes. 4.4 Timing device Appropriate timing methods should be used to ensure consistent processing of all parts in the same group. 4.5 Grayscale comparison card It is advisable to choose a suitable grayscale contrast card. The grayscale card shown in Figure 1 can be used, or a sample of a known surface tempered image can be used for comparison. Figure 1 is an example of a commercial grayscale card. Due to differences in copied image quality, the gray scale displayed in this image is not necessarily accurate and is for ......
