Down and feather
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the terms and definitions, requirements, test methods, judgment
rules, marking, packaging, transportation and storage of down and feather.
This Standard applies to the production, processing and trade of down and feather.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions are applicable to this document.
3.1
Down and feather
A collective term for the down and feather that grow on waterfowl. Where the nominal
value of "down content" is greater than or equal to 50%, it is called "down"; where the
nominal value of "down content" is less than 50%, it is called "feather". Common
species are goose down and duck down.
3.2
Down
Including down cluster, nestling down, plumule, damaged down.
3.3
Down content
The mass percentage of down in down and feather.

Feather fiber
A single feather branch that falls off the feather surface.
3.13
Quill feather
A feather whose length is greater than or equal to 12 cm, or whose feather root length
is greater than or equal to 1.2 cm.
3.14
Colored down and feather
Colored down and feather in white goose and white duck down and feather.
3.15
Damaged feather
Feathers damaged by worms, mildew and machine during processing, including broken
feathers and feathers whose damaged area exceeds one third of the total area.

Landfowl feather
The feathers of terrestrial birds. Common species are chickens, pigeons, and ostriches.
3.17
Residue
Sand, dust, dander, small blood vessels and other foreign objects.
3.18
Filling power
In a container of a certain diameter, the volume occupied by a certain amount of down
and feather samples under a specified pressure.
3.19
Oxygen number
The amount of oxygen in the potassium permanganate that is consumed by the reducing
substances in the filtrate, after vibration and filtration of the down and feather sample,
expressed in mg value corresponding to 100 g of the sample.
3.20
Turbidity
The measured value of the water washing filtrate of the down sample, which is
measured with a turbidimeter; it indicates the degree of cleanliness of the down and
feather.

Fat and oil content
The mass percentage of fat and other fats absorbed in a unit mass of down and feather.
4 Requirements
Down and feather products are not allowed to contain quill feathers, and the quality
requirements shall comply with the provisions of Table 1.
