This Standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009. This Standard replaces GB/T 19587-2004, Determination of the specific surface area of solids by gas adsorption using the BET method. Compared with GB/T 19587-2004, the major changes of this Standard are as follows. ⎯ ADD types of adsorption isotherms to which the BET method is applicable and relevant content of chemisorption; ⎯ ADD terms such as volume adsorbed, macropore, mesopore and micropore; ⎯ REMOVE some symbols in Table 1; ⎯ MODIFY the Principle to a large extent; ⎯ ADD Figure 1 IUPAC classification of adsorption isotherms; ⎯ REMOVE Figure 2, Figure 6, Figure 7 and relevant notes in the original standard, and MODIFY some figures; ⎯ CHANGE the clauses of the standard. ⎯ ADD “9 Use of reference materials”. This Standard is identical to ISO 9277.2010 Determination of the specific surface area of solids by gas adsorption - BET method by using the translation method. This Standard was proposed by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association. This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee on Nonferrous Metals of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 243) and National Technical Committee 168 on Screening and Particles Screen Analysis of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 168). The previous version replaced by this Standard is. ⎯ GB/T 19587-2004. Determination of the specific surface area of solids by gas adsorption using the BET method1 Scope
This Standard specifies the determination of the overall (see Note) specific external and internal surface area of disperse (e.g., nano-powders) or porous solids by measuring the amount of physically adsorbed gas according to the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method [1].2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. ISO 8213, Chemical products for industrial use – Sampling techniques – Solid chemical products in the form of particles varying from powders to coarse lumps3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply. relationship between the amount of gas adsorbed and the equilibrium pressure of the gas, at constant temperature4 Symbols
Table 1 presents the symbols used in this Standard, together with their common units derived from the SI. For comparison purposes, the lUPAC symbols [7][8] are also given. These may differ from the symbols generally used in International Standards. All specific dimensions are related to sample mass in grams.5 Principle
The BET method is applicable only to adsorption isotherms of type II (disperse, nonporous or macroporous solids) and type IV (mesoporous solids, pore diameter between 2 nm ~ 50 nm) (see Figure 1).6 Procedure
Using the vacuum technique, isolate the heated sample container from the pump and trap (at time ti in Figure 4). If the pressure is nearly constant over a period of 15 min ~ 30 min, degassing is complete. Almost invariant pressure also confirms the absence of leaks. The specific surface area should be related to the mass of the degassed sample.7 Evaluation of adsorption data
Having established that the BET plot for the particular type of material gives a straight line, it is possible to use a simplified procedure requiring only the determination of a single point on the isotherm in the range of relative pressures between 0.2 ~ 0.3. The monolayer amount nm,sp is less than or equal to nm,mp derived from a multipoint determination.8 Test report
The test report shall contain at least the following information.9 Use of reference materials
To ensure proper working conditions and correct data evaluation, the apparatus performance should be monitored periodically using a certified reference material or a quality control material.Annex A

(Informative) Certified reference materials for the BET method Certified reference materials are currently available from BAM1 in Germany, IRMM1 in Belgium, NIST1 in the USA, and APPIE1 in Japan (See Table B.1 and Reference [17]). ......Source: Above contents are excerpted from the full-copy PDF -- translated/reviewed by: www.ChineseStandard.net / Wayne Zheng et al.
