1 Scope

This document stipulates the coding rules, coding methods and inland waterway codes of the People's Republic of China. This document is applicable to the design and development of my country's inland waterway statistics and related management information systems, as well as the exchange and sharing of inland waterway data.

2 Normative reference documents

The contents of the following documents constitute essential provisions of this document through normative references in the text. Among them, the dated quotations For undated referenced documents, only the version corresponding to that date applies to this document; for undated referenced documents, the latest version (including all amendments) applies to this document. 3 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document. 3.1 inlandwaterway Channels that are navigable for ships in inland waters such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and channels within the territory of the People's Republic of China. Note. Inland waterways include national and international rivers and waterways.

4 Coding rules

4.1 The only starting and ending point A channel should have only one starting point, one end point and one channel name. Channels formed by different main streams and tributaries should be regarded as different Channels, respectively named and coded. Example. Tangbai River is a tributary of Hanjiang River, and Tanghe and Baihe are tributaries of Tangbai River respectively. Therefore, Tangbai River, Tanghe and Baihe are three waterways, and they are named Tangbai River respectively. River Channel, Tang River Channel, and Baihe Channel, see the diagram in Figure 1.
