Acoustic underwater acoustic target strength measurements laboratory methods
1 Scope
This standard specifies the laboratory measurement of underwater acoustic target strength measuring device, the measurement conditions, measured steps.
This standard applies to the frequency of laboratory measurements at 1kHz ~ 500kHz range underwater acoustic target strength.
Note. The target strength of large underwater acoustic targets using scale model measurements, see Appendix A.

GB/T 3947-1996 Acoustics Terminology
3 Terms and Definitions
GB/T 3947-1996 and defined the following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1
Scattering [acoustic] scattering
Sonic in any direction irregular reflection, refraction or diffraction.
Note. The incident and scattered sound waves in the opposite direction is called the scattering echoes or backscattered waves.
3.2
Target strength targetstrength; TS
Acoustic backscatter from the target center at 1m equivalent sound intensity level incident plane wave sound intensity level of the difference.
Note. The sound intensity level is limited to the free exercise of wave conditions, then the sound intensity level and sound pressure level equal to, or only the sound pressure level can be measured directly.
[GB/T 3947-1996, the definition 7.33]
3.3
Scale model scalemodel
The goal reduced by a certain percentage after model made.
4 Symbol
The following symbols apply to this document.
A --- chirp signal amplitude in volts (V);
am --- maximum linear shrinkage ratio in the model projection plane perpendicular to the direction of the incident wave, in meters (m);
a1 --- maximum emission line of the transducer radiating in meters (m);
Maximum line of a2 --- hydrophone in meters (m);
a3 --- the biggest target in the line of projection plane perpendicular to the direction of the incident wave, in meters (m);
a4 --- the biggest target in the line of the projection surface acoustic axis direction, in meters (m);
cw --- water medium speed of sound in meters per second (m/s);
