1 Scope

This Standard applies to ferrous citrate, a food fortifier prepared by reacting ferrous sulfate with sodium carbonate to produce ferrous carbonate, and then reacting it with citric acid.

2 Molecular formula and relative molecular mass

3 Technical requirements

3.1 Sensory requirements The sensory requirements shall comply with the provisions of Table 1. 3.2 Physicochemical indicators The physicochemical indicators shall comply with the provisions of Table 2.

Test methods A.1 General Unless otherwise specified, the reagents and water used in this Standard refer to analytical grade reagents and grade 3 water as specified in GB/T 6682.Unless otherwise specified, the standard solutions, standard solutions for impurity determination, preparations, and products used in the tests shall be prepared according to the provisions of GB/T 601, GB/T 602, and GB/T 603.Unless otherwise specified, the solutions used in the tests are aqueous solutions. A.2 Identification tests A.2.1 Reagents and materials A.2.1.1 Pyridine. A.2.1.2 Glacial acetic acid. A.2.1.3 Potassium ferricyanide solution. Weigh 1 g of potassium ferricyanide [K3Fe(CN)6] and dissolve it in 10 mL of water. This solution shall be prepared before use. A.2.2 Identification methods A.2.2.1 Identification of citrate Weigh 1 g of sample, add 10 mL of water to prepare a 100 mg/mL sample solution, add 15 mL of pyridine and 5 mL of glacial acetic acid, shake; the solution turns pale red. A.2.2.2 Identification of ferrous salt Weigh 1 g of sample, add 10 mL of water to prepare a 100 mg/mL sample solution, add an appropriate amount of potassium ferricyanide solution; a deep blue precipitate forms. A.3 Determination of ferrous iron content (Fe) A.3.1 Method summary In acidic medium, titrate with cerium sulfate standard solution, using 1,10- phenanthroline-ferrous indicator solution to indicate the endpoint.
