Introduction
The coalbed methane is an important clean energy. The development of specifications of
coalbed methane resources / reserves, that is suitable for our national conditions and
compatible with international standards, can promote the reasonable utilization; prevent
the disaster of gas of coal mine; and prevent atmospheric environment of coalbed
methane resource, under the situation of the reform and opening-up policy. In order to
adapt the needs of exploration, development and resources / reserves management of
coalbed, Ministry of Land and Resources issued Specifications for Coalbed Methane
Resources / Reserves (DZ/T 0216-2002) in the form of geological mineral industry
standard of the People’s Republic of China on December 17, 2002. It will be put into effect
on March 1, 2003. After more than 7 years of implementation, this specifications has
played a role in promoting the development of coalbed methane; in the meanwhile, it also
exposes some shortcomings.
On January 29, 2008, the Consulting and Research Center of the Ministry of Land and
Resources Entrust Department conducted a study, and revised the specifications to be
this Standard.
From the implementation date of this Standard, the previous standard shall be abolished
simultaneously.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this Standard.
3.1
SN/T 2034-2007
Coalbed methane (referred as CBM)
The hydrocarbon gas of which the main component is methane; it is absorbed in the coalbed;
the original state is mainly absorbed to the particle surface of the coal matrix, and is
supplemented and dissociated in cleats, cracks and pores or dissolved in coalbed water. This
Standard specifies that the required estimating resources / reserves mainly refers to adsorbed
gas.
3.2
Coalbed methane resources
The total amount of coalbed methane which is occurred in coalbed, according to the
estimation by certain geological and exploration engineering basis; is recoverable in current
time or future; and has the realistic economic significance and potential economic significance.
According to with- and without- prospecting-well engineering control, it is divided into the
known reserves and potential reserves to be discovered.
3.3
Coalbed methane reserves
3.3.1
Original coalbed methane in place
Under the original state, the total coalbed methane which is occurred in the known coalbed
with a clear estimation boundary; has realistic economic significance. According to
exploration degree, it is divided into 3 levels - forecasted, controlled, and proved.
3.3.2
Recoverable reserves
The recoverable part of the original coalbed methane in place. It refers to using the existing
technologies and theoretical estimation or analogy to calculate the recoverable total coalbed
methane, under the current laws and policies and market conditions. It is divided into
“controlled” and “proved” levels, according to exploration degree.
For recovery-rate parameter, it may be obtained by adopting the methods such as analogy
and numerical simulation of the same domestic or foreign geological conditions.
3.3.3
Commercial recoverable reserve
It is part of the recoverable reserves. It refers to using methods such as theoretical estimation
or analogy to calculate the recoverable total coalbed methane, under the current economic
and technical conditions. It can be divided into the “controlled” and the “proved” levels,
SN/T 2034-2007
according to exploration degree.
3.3.4
Developed initial reserves
The proved commercial recoverable reserves that is consumed by the corresponding
cumulative production. Generally it may be obtained by using the cumulative production to be
divided by recovery-rate.
3.3.5
Remainder proved initial reserves (referred as remainder reserves)
The difference BETWEEN proved commercial recoverable reserves AND developed initial
reserves is the remainder proved initial reserves. Remainder proved initial reserves are
divided into “built capacity remainder commercial recoverable reserves” and “un-built capacity
remainder commercial recoverable reserves”.
Built capacity remainder commercial recoverable reserves refer to the remainder proved initial
reserves that is occupied by under-built or built capacity.
Un-built capacity remainder commercial recoverable reserves refer to the difference
BETWEEEN the remainder proved initial reserves AND built capacity remainder commercial
recoverable reserves.
3.3.6
Coalbed methane reserves abundance
The coalbed methane reserves in the unit of coalbed containing-gas area.
3.4
Coalbed methane well
3.4.1
Prospecting well
The engineering well which adopts drilling-well, supplemented by logging-well and coring
analysis test method, to determine the parameters such as coalbed’s depth, thickness,

3.1 The coalbed methane field (reserves) reservoir is heterogeneous. There
exists the differences in gas content and capacity etc. It shall be appropriate to
carry out rolling exploration-development. It shall conduct dynamic reserves
assessment. From discovery to abandoned stages of exploration and
development, its operator shall - according to geological changes, changes in
engineering data, technical and economic conditions or policies - conduct
reserves evaluation, calculation, double-calculation, and business accounting
in phrases.
3.2 Coalbed is the reservoir for coalbed methane. Coal field exploration and
awareness degree is not only an important foundation for coalbed methane
exploration deployment, but also an important basis for coalbed methane
resources / reserves evaluation.

absorbed to the particle surface of the coal matrix, and is partially dissociated
in pores or dissolved in coalbed water.
4.2 Coalbed methane resources
