Foreword
This Standard is drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Standard replaces JB/T 8872-2002 “Specification for carbon-graphite
sealing ring for mechanical seals”. As compared with JB/T 8872-2002, the main
technical changes of this Standard are as follows:
- Adjust the physical and mechanical property parameters of some carbon-
graphite sealing ring materials;
- Modify the hydraulic test method for the graphite ring;
- Modify the inspection provisions.
This Standard was proposed by China Machinery Industry Federation.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee
491 on Mechanical Seal of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC
491).

Specification for carbon-graphite sealing ring for
mechanical seals
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the product classification, requirements, inspection
methods, inspection provisions, marking, packaging, transportation, and
storage, etc. of carbon-graphite sealing ring for mechanical seals.
This Standard applies to the material selection and design of carbon-graphite
sealing ring for mechanical seals.

4.5 The parallelism of the seal face of planar sealing ring to the end face which
the auxiliary sealing ring contacts, in accordance with GB/T 1184-1996, has
Grade 7 tolerance.
4.6 The surface roughness of the contact surface between the planar sealing
ring and the auxiliary sealing ring is not more than Ra 3.2 μm.
4.7 The size tolerances of the static ring and rotating ring of planar sealing ring
and of the outer circle and inner hole in contact with the auxiliary sealing ring
are h8 or H8.
4.8 The perpendicularity of the seal face of static ring and rotating ring of planar
sealing ring to the outer circle and inner hole in contact with the auxiliary sealing
ring, in accordance with GB/T 1184-1996, has Grade 7 tolerance.
4.9 The carbon-graphite sealing ring shall be tested for hydraulic pressure
(internal pressure). Sealing rings for non-balanced and balanced mechanical
seals shall have a test pressure of 0.8 MPa and 1.6 MPa respectively for 10
min and shall not leak. If there are special requirements, it shall be carried out
according to the drawings.
4.10 The carbon-graphite sealing ring is not allowed to have cracks, oxidation,
delamination, penetrating pitting, pores, impervious impregnation.
4.11 The chemical corrosion resistance, friction coefficient, recommended
pairing materials and thermal performance parameters of carbon-graphite
sealing rings are given in informative Appendix A, B, and C, respectively.
5 Inspection methods
5.1 The test methods of Shore hardness, transverse strength, compressive
strength, volume density, and open porosity of carbon-graphite sealing ring
material shall be in accordance with JB/T 8133.4, JB/T 8133.7, JB/T 8133.8,
JB/T 8133.14, and JB/T 8133.15.
5.2 The hydraulic inspection of carbon-graphite sealing ring material is carried
out on a dedicated hydraulic test device.
5.3 The size deviation and geometrical tolerance of carbon-graphite sealing ring
are respectively inspected according to the provisions of GB/T 3177 and GB/T
1958.
5.4 USE an intuitive method to inspect the surface defects of carbon-graphite
sealing ring.
6 Inspection provisions
6.1 Inspection classification
The inspection is classified into exit-factory inspection and appraisal inspection.
6.2 Exit-factory inspection
6.2.1 Inspection items
The inspection items are carried out according to 4.2~4.10.
6.2.2 Sampling method
The appearance quality is 100% inspected. The sampling schemes for the size
deviation, geometrical tolerance, and hydraulic test of carbon-graphite sealing
ring are all in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 2828.1. USE single
normal sampling scheme. The special inspection level is S-4. The acceptance
quality level AQL=4.0.
6.3 Appraisal inspection
6.3.1 Inspection timing
In one of the following cases, it shall carry out an appraisal inspection:
a) Before design is finalized and product is put into production;
b) There are major changes in product structure, materials, and processes;
c) Transfer plant production of products;
d) Required by the user;
e) Required by the national quality supervision department.
6.3.2 Inspection items
In addition to the inspection according to 6.2, according to the specified
requirements or when required by the client, the Shore hardness, transverse
strength, compressive strength, density, and open porosity of the material shall
also be tested.
6.3.3 Sampling method
At least 1 sample is taken for each lot of products for inspection.
