Compared with GB/T 5494-1985, this Standard has the major changes as follows.
--- Added the contents of Normative References;
--- Added the illumination requirements during the inspection operational process;
--- Added the inspection method for the unsound kernels of rice;
--- Partially Modified the operation method and results calculation;
--- Deleted the calculation of pure kernel yield.
This Standard was proposed by State Administration of Grain.

Inspection of Grain and Oils
– Determination of Foreign Matter
and Unsound Kernels of Grain and Oilseeds
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the apparatus, illumination requirements, sample preparation,
operation methods and results calculation for inspection of foreign matter and unsound
kernels of grain and oilseeds.
This Standard is applicable to the determination of foreign matter and unsound kernels
of grain and oilseeds.
2 Normative References
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through
reference in this Standard. For dated references, the subsequent amendments
(excluding corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this Standard, however, parties
who reach an agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest
versions of these documents are applicable. For undated references, the latest edition
of the referenced document applies.

3.1 Balance with sensibility of 0.01g, 0.1g, 1g.
3.2 Grain sieve.
3.3 Electric selector.
3.4 Sample splitter and sample splitting plate.
3.5 Analytical disk, tweezers, etc.
4 Illumination Requirements
The illumination conditions during the operation process shall meet the requirements
of GB/T 22505.
5 Sample Preparation
The specimen for inspecting the foreign matter can be divided into large and small
specimen; the large specimen is used for inspecting the large specimen foreign matter
including the large foreign matter and passed sieve material of absolute sieve; while
the small specimen indicates small amount of specimen separated from the one
inspected the large specimen foreign matter; it is used for inspecting the foreign matter
with approximately the same size and shape of the grain.
Separately take the specimen according to the provisions of GB 5491 to the specimen
amount specified in Table 1.

Super-large kernel. peanut fruit, kernel, castor seed, paulownia
seed, tea seed, shiny-leaved yellow horn, large broad bean, etc. About 1000 About 200
Others. inspection of barnyard millet with husk and paddy in the
sweet potato chips and rice About 500~1000
6 Operation Procedures
6.1 Inspection of foreign matter and unsound kernels in the general grain and
oilseeds
6.1.1 Screening
6.1.1.1 Electric selector method. use the sieve layer stipulated in the quality standard
to cover (microporous sieve is above, the mini-porous sieve is below, covered with
sieve bottom); take the specimen according to the provisions to put onto the sieve,
cover the sieve cap; put it onto the electric selector; turn on the power, turn on the
switch; the sieve automatically turn to left and right for 1min, respectively
(110r/min~120r/min); stand for a moment after screening; separately pour the screen
overflow and screen underflow onto the analysis disk. The grains stuck in the middle
of the sieve belong to screen overflow.
6.1.1.2 Hand sieving method. cover the sieve layer as per the method stipulated in
6.1.1.1; pour into the specimen, and cover the sieve cap. Then put the selector onto
the glass plate or smooth desktop; use both hands to screen in the clockwise and
counterclockwise directions at the speed of 110 times/min ~ 120times/min for 1 min,
respectively. The screening range shall be controlled with sieve diameter expanding
8cm~10cm. The operation after screening is the same as 6.1.1.1.
6.1.2 Large-specimen foreign matter inspection
From the average sample, separately take specimen according to the provision of
Clause 5 to the large specimen amount (m) specified in Table 1, accurate to 1g;
screening for twice according to the screening method specified in 6.1.1 (super-large
kernel of grain and oilseeds shall be screened for 4 times); then select the screen
overflow large foreign matter and screen underflow, and weigh them together (m1),
accurate to 0.01g (large foreign matter of wheat shall be selected from the 4.5mm
sieve).
6.1.3 Small-specimen foreign matter inspection
From the specimen inspecting the large-specimen foreign matter, separately take the
specimen according to the provisions of Clause 5 to the small- specimen amount (m2)
specified in Table 1; when the small-specimen amount is no greater than 100g,
accurate to 0.01g; when small-specimen amount is greater than 100g, accurate to 0.1g;
pour into the analysis disk; select the foreign matter according to the provisions of
quality standard; weigh (m3), accurate to 0.01g.
6.1.4 Minerals inspection
If there is minerals indicator (excluding the rice) specified in the quality standard, select
the minerals from the separated small-specimen foreign matter; weigh (m4), accurate
to 0.01g.
6.1.5 Unsound kernel inspection
When inspecting the small-specimen foreign matter, select the unsound kernel
according to the provision of quality standard; weigh (m5), accurate to 0.01g.
6.2 Inspection of foreign matter and unsound kernel in the rice
6.2.1 Total mass inspection of bran powder, minerals and foreign matters
Separately take 200g (m’) of specimen according to the provisions of Clause 5,
accurate to 0.1g; place into the round-hole sieve with diameter 1.0mm for 2 times;
screen as per the screening method specified in 6.1.1; after screening, tap the sieve
gently, so that the bran powder can fall off on the bottom of the sieve. After all the
specimens are screened, brush off the bran powder remained on the sieve layer, weigh
together (m1’), accurate to 0.01g. Pour the screen overflow into the analysis disk (the
kernels stuck in the middle of the sieve hole belong to screen overflow). Separately
select the minerals from the specimen inspecting the bran powder, and weigh together
(m2’), accurate to 0.01g. Select the paddy kernel, barnyard millet with husk and other
foreign matters, weigh together (m3’), accurate to 0.01g.
6.2.2 Inspection of barnyard millet with husk and paddy kernel
Separately take 500g of specimen according to the provisions of Clause 5, accurate to
1g; select the barnyard millet with husk (X) and paddy kernel (Y); calculate their
contents, respectively.
6.2.3 Unsound kernel inspection
Separately take the specimen according to the provisions of Clause 5 to the small-
specimen amount (m4’) specified in Table 1 (the amount of small-specimen of rice is
the same as the crude grain), accurate to 0.01g; pour the specimen into the analysis
disk; select the unsound kernels according to the provisions of grain and oilseeds
quality standard, and weigh (m5’), accurate to 0.01g.

general grain and oilseeds
