Nomenclature and terminology for automotive electrical
equipment, lighting and instrumentation
This standard specifies the definitions of terms, for automotive electrical appliances
(excluding batteries, spark plugs, other electrical appliances for special purposes),
lamps and instruments, as well as their English comparisons.
1 General terminology
1.1 Nominal voltage, basic system voltage
Refers to the nominal voltage of the vehicle electrical system. 6 V, 12 V or 24 V.
1.2 Rated voltage
Terminal voltage during rated operation. For generators. 7 V for 6 V systems, 14 V
for 12 V systems; 28 V for 24 V systems.
1.3 Single wire system
The wiring method which uses the metal part of the car body as the electrical circuit.
1.4 Earth, ground
In the single-wire system, the product casing is connected to the vehicle body, as a
conductor of the electrical circuit.

1.5 Negative earth
The negative pole of the battery is connected to the vehicle body.
1.6 Terminal post
Threaded (or unthreaded) terminals.
Superseded Synonym. Terminal screw.
1.7 Blade terminal
Blade-shaped terminals.
2 Charging system
2.1 DC generator, dynamo
The generator, which has a DC output current after, after commutated by the
commutator.
2.6 Cut-in speed
The generator speed, when the generator load is zero AND the terminal voltage
reaches the rated voltage.
2.7 Load speed
2.13 Alternator regulator
A device, that controls the output voltage of an alternator within a specified range
OR is combined with other auxiliary devices.
2.13.1 Field relay
A relay, which is used to automatically switch the alternator's field circuit on and off.
Superseded synonym. anti-backflow relay.
2.13.2 Charge indicator relay
A relay, which is used to automatically switch the battery's charge indicator on and
off.
2.14.2.3 Accelerating winding
A coil, which is used in a voltage regulator or current limiter, to increase the
frequency of vibration of a contact.
Superseded synonym. vibration coil.
2.14.2.7 Core
Magnetic conductive parts, that cooperate with coils, to generate magnetic force.
2.14.2.8 Armature
Magnetically conductive parts, that drive contacts by electromagnetic attraction.
Superseded synonym. Vibrating arm, tongue.
2.14.2.9 Earth screw
Superseded synonym. Ground screw.
3 Starting system
3.1 Starter, starting motor, cranking motor
A DC motor of the starting engine, which is powered by a battery.
Superseded synonym. starter motor, starter.
3.1.1 Overruning clutch
Clutches that transmit torque in only one direction of rotation.
Superseded synonym. clutch, one-way clutch, overrunning clutch.
3.1.1.1 Roller-type overrunning clutch
A clutch, that transmits torque, when the rollers installed in the raceway of the one-
way clutch are wedged.
3.1.4 Shift lever
A shift lever, which is operated by an electromagnetic switch or a mechanical switch,
to toggle the drive gear to mesh with the flywheel's gear ring.
Superseded synonym. lever, moving fork.
3.1.5 Meshing spring
The intermediate buffer spring, which is installed on the one-way clutch, when the
shift lever pushes the drive gear to mesh with the flywheel's gear ring.
3.1.6 Return spring
The spring that, when the electromagnetic force of the electromagnetic switch
disappears, resets the electromagnetic switch and the drive gear.

4 Ignition system
4.1 Classical ignition system, conventional ignition system
An ignition system, which is composed of an ignition coil, a circuit breaker with
contacts (parallel with capacitors), a corresponding power supply.
Superseded synonym. Battery ignition system.
4.1.1 Ignition coil
An induction coil in an ignition system, that generates high voltage electricity.
4.1.1.5 Low tension terminal
4.1.2 Ignition distributor
A device, which turns on and off the primary circuit of the ignition system, so that
the ignition coil generates high-voltage electricity, AND distributes it to the spark
plug on the corresponding cylinder, according to the ignition time and sequence
required by the engine.
4.1.2.1 Breaker cam
A flanged wheel, which is mounted on the ignition distributor's shaft, to periodically
open and close the circuit breaker's contacts.
4.2 Semi-conductor ignition system, electronic ignition system, solid state ignition
system
Ignition systems, which use the semiconductor devices as switches.

4.3 Inductive ignition system
An ignition system, that stores primary energy in an ignition coil.
4.4 Capacitor discharge ignition system
Ignition system, that stores primary energy in capacitors.
4.5 Semi-conductor assisted ignition system
Semiconductor ignition systems, which use the contact breaker.
4.6 Breakless ignition system
Ignition system without contact breaker.
4.7 Distributorless ignition system
An ignition system, that does not require a rotating high-voltage distributor.
4.8 Secondary available voltage
The minimum voltage available at the spark plug connection, under specified
conditions.
4.9 Required spark plug voltage
The maximum voltage, that must be applied to the spark plug terminal, when the
spark plug electrode gap flashes, under specified conditions.
4.17 Peak coil current
In an inductive ignition system, the peak current, that passes through the primary
winding of the ignition coil.
4.18 Interruption current
In an inductive ignition system, the current, that flows through the primary winding,
when the power is turned off.
4.19 Contact breaker current
Under specified conditions, the contact current, that flows through the power-off
triggering device, at the moment when the contact is opened.
4.20 Primary supply voltage
Under specified conditions, the DC voltage of the ignition system's primary terminal.
4.21 Coil primary induced voltage
The voltage, which is induced in the primary winding of the coil, due to changes in
the magnetic flux.
5 Small-power motor
5.1 Wiper motor
Electric motor with reducer, that drives the wiper mechanism.
Superseded synonym. rain wiper motor.
5.2 Heater motor
The electric motor, that drives the fan for heating the interior of the car.
Superseded synonym. heating motor.
5.6 Antenna motor, aerial motor
The motor, that drives the antenna lift mechanism.
5.7 Seat adjustment motor
The motor, that drives the seat moving mechanism.
5.8 Washer motor
Electric motor, which is equipped with washer pump.
5.8.1 Washer pump
A pump, which is composed of gears or vanes, installed at the output end of the
washer motor.
5.9 Lubricating motor
The electric motor, that drives the engine lubrication pump.
6 Lighting equipment
6.1 Headlamp
The main luminaire for lighting the road ahead.
Superseded synonym. head light, front light.
6.1.4.5 light shield
A shield, which is attached to the reflector, to block direct light from the illuminator.
6.1.4.6 Sealed beam unit
A non-removable optical assembly with a fusion-sealed lens, mirror, light source.
6.1.4.7 Semi-sealed beam unit
An optical assembly, whose lens is sealed with the reflector, AND the light bulb can
be replaced.
6.1.4.8 Lens, glass lens
A lens, that combines one or more optical units, to obtain the desired light
distribution characteristics.

6.6 Ceiling lamp
Lamps, which are installed on the roof of the carriage.
6.7 Reading lamp
Lamps, which are installed in the carriage for reading.
6.8 Step lamp, courtesy light
Lamps, that illuminate the door steps.
6.9 Instrument panel lamp
Lamps for instrument lighting.
6.10 Portable lamp
Lighting fixtures for car repairs.
6.11 Block-out lamp
Luminaires, which are used during light control.
6.18 Bright viewing distance
The distance, between the point where the illuminance is 2lx and the light
distribution mirror of the luminaire.
6.19 Luminous intensity distribution
The illuminance distribution, which is designed according to the driving
requirements of the car.

6.20 Transmission diameter
The diameter of the effective area of light passing through the lens.

7 Signal system
7.1 Signal lamp, indicator
Luminaires for the purpose of light signals (or signs).
7.1.1 Side light
The general term for front turn signals, width lamp, front parking lights.
7.1.2 Tail lamp
A lamp, that indicates the presence of a car, when driving at night.

7.1.3 Back-up lamp
When the car is reversing, the lamp, which is used to indicate the reversing signal
and observe the obstacles behind.
7.1.9 Hazard warning lamp
In emergency situations, lamps that can send out flashing warning signals.
7.2 Flasher
A device, that flashes a signal light.
Superseded synonym. interrupter, flashing relay.
7.3.3 Trumpet type horn
Electric horn, which has an elongated speaker.
7.4 Air horn, pneumatic horn
A warning device, which uses compressed air to excite the diaphragm to vibrate to
generate an audible sound.
7.5 Transistor horn
A warning device, that uses a transistor circuit to excite the diaphragm to vibrate to
generate an audible sound.
7.6 Monotone horn
A single horn, which has only one tone.
7.7 Bitone horn
A horn set, which consists of two horns with different tones.
7.8 Tritone horn
A horn set, which consists of three horns with different tones.
7.9 Horn relay
The relay, that controls the operation of the horn.
7.10 Back-up buzzer
Alarm device, which is used when reversing.

7.11 Buzzer
An acoustic device, that uses an electromagnetic coil to excite the diaphragm to
vibrate to produce a low sound level.
8 Instrumentation
8.1 Instrument panel assembly
An assembly, which consists of a number of instruments (instrument indicators),
indicator lights, warning lights, etc., as mounted on one board.

8.2 Speedometer
A meter, that indicates the speed of the car AND records the mileage.

8.5 Temperature gauge
A gauge, that indicates the temperature of the cooling water or lubricating oil of an
automobile engine.
8.10 Combination instrument
A whole instrument, which consists of a number of instrument movements, indicator
movements, indicator lights, warning lights, as installed in the same housing.
8.11 Air pressure gauge
A gauge, which indicates the pressure of the pneumatic brake system.
8.12 Tachograph
A device, that automatically records the instantaneous speed, mileage, time of a car.
8.13 Engine hour meter
A meter, which indicates the accumulated operating time of the engine.
8.14 Additional temperature error
The amount of change in the indicated value of the instrument, which is caused when
the ambient temperature of the instrument and accessories deviates from the
specified temperature.
