Foreword
This document was drafted in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020
Directives for standardization - Part 1.Rules for the structure and drafting of
standardizing documents.
This document replaces GB/T 5313-2010 Steel plates with through-thickness
characteristics. Compared with GB/T 5313-2010, in addition to structural adjustments
and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows.
a) The term and definition of "through-thickness properties" is added (see
Chapter 3);
b) The requirements for the Reduction of Area are changed (see Notes 1 and 2 of
Table 2; see Table 2 of the 2010 version);
c) The specimen preparation of steel plates is changed (see 6.2; see 5.2 of the
2010 edition);
d) The requirements for specimens of steel plates with extensions are changed
(see 6.3; see 5.3 of the 2010 edition);
e) The requirements for specimens of steel plates without extensions are changed
(see 6.4; see 5.3 of the 2010 edition);
f) The specimen preparation and type diagrams are changed (see Figure 1 of 6.3,
Figure 2 and Figure 3 of 6.4; see Figure B.1~Figure B.3 of the 2010 version);
g) The inspection rules are changed (see 8.1; see Chapter 7 of the 2010 edition);
h) The re-inspection rules are changed (see 8.3.1; see 7.3.1 of the 2010 version);
i) The supplementary requirements for steel plates, specimen preparation and
type are deleted (see Appendix A and Appendix B of the 2010 edition).

Steel plate with through-thickness properties
1 Scope
This document specifies the grade expression method, technical requirements, sample
and specimen preparation, test methods, and inspection rules for steel plates with
through-thickness properties.
This document applies to killed steel plates with a thickness of 15 mm~400 mm.
2 Normative references
The following documents contain the provisions which, through normative reference in
this document, constitute the essential provisions of this document. For the dated
referenced documents, only the versions with the indicated dates are applicable to this
document; for the undated referenced documents, only the latest version (including all
the amendments) is applicable to this document.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 through-thickness properties
The deformation performance that is perpendicular to the surface of the steel plate and
reflects the ability of the steel plate to resist lamellar tearing.
4 Grade expression method
The grade of steel plate with through-thickness properties consists of the original grade
of the product and the level of through-thickness properties (Z15, Z25, or Z35).
5 Technical requirements
5.1 The sulfur content (smelting analysis) of steel corresponding to different through-
thickness property levels shall comply with the provisions of Table 1.
5.2 The level of through-thickness properties of the steel plate, the corresponding
average value of reduction of area, and the minimum value of a single specimen shall
comply with the provisions of Table 2.
5.3 Steel plates with through-thickness properties shall be subjected to ultrasonic flaw
detection. Unless otherwise specified, ultrasonic flaw detection shall be carried out in
accordance with GB/T 2970, and the result shall meet the requirements of quality level III.
6 Sample and specimen preparation
6.1 Sampling
The sample shall be cut in the middle (at 1/2 of the width) of one end along the main
rolling direction (longitudinal direction) of the steel plate. For steel plates made from
steel ingots, it shall be ensured that it is taken at the head end of the corresponding steel
ingot.
6.2 Specimen preparation
According to the following steps, specimens with or without extensions shall be
prepared from the sample thar is cut according to the requirements of 6.1.The axis of
the specimens shall be perpendicular to the surface of the steel plate. Specimens with
extensions are specified as follows.
6.3 Specimens with extensions
The preparation and type of specimens with extensions are shown in Figure 1.
Before welding, all rust, oxide scale, grease, and other debris on the surface of the
specimen shall be removed.
Weld the extension to both surfaces of the specimen by using friction welding or other
suitable methods to ensure that the heat-affected zone is minimized.
The specimen diameter (d0) is as follows.
6.4 Specimens without extensions
The preparation and type of specimens without extensions are shown in Figures 2 and 3.

7 Test methods
The tensile test in thickness direction shall be conducted in accordance with GB/T 228.1,
and the reduction of area shall be determined in accordance with GB/T 228.1.The
reduction of area is calculated according to formula (1), formula (2), and formula (3).
8 Inspection rules
8.1 Batch grouping rules
Z25 and Z35 grade steel plates shall be tested for through-thickness properties of steel
plates one by one.
8.2 Inspection
The average value of the reduction of area of a group of three specimens shall comply
with the specified average value. The reduction of area of one specimen is allowed to
be lower than the specified minimum average value, but it shall not be lower than the
specified minimum value of a single specimen. When the above requirements cannot
be met, three spare specimens will be used for additional testing.
8.3 Re-inspection
8.4 Retest
If the specimen is improperly processed or poorly welded, it shall be discarded. If the
specimen breaks at the weld or heat-affected zone, the specimen shall be invalid. At this
time, additional specimens can be taken from the same sample and the test can be
repeated.
