Safety guide for explosion protection
in explosive hazardous areas
1 Scope
1.1 This standard specifies the safety guide for explosion protection in explosive
hazardous areas. It includes the requirements for the safety protection of the
owner to the workers in various types of explosive hazardous areas, as well as
the common explosion proof safety technical requirements in the design,
manufacture, inspection, sale, installation, use, overhauling, and maintenance
of the equipment and protection system.
1.2 This standard applies to the safety protection of the owner of the explosive
hazardous area for the workers in the explosive hazardous area, as well as the
equipment and protection system as used in the explosive hazardous area. It
can be used as the minimum requirements of the owner of the explosive
hazardous area for the safety protection of the workers, as well as the structural
foundations for the explosion proof safety contents of the equipment and
protection system in various explosive hazardous areas AND the technical
foundations for the design, manufacture, inspection, sale, installation and use
of the equipment and protection system in the explosive hazardous area.
1.3 Those safety devices, control devices and adjusting devices intended to be
used outside the explosive hazardous area BUT which are associated with the
safety functions of equipment and protective systems in explosive hazardous
area or which has safety functions are also included in the scope of this
1.4 The owner of an explosion hazardous area within the territory of the
People's Republic of China shall comply with the requirements of this standard;
the equipment and protective systems for explosive hazardous areas designed,
manufactured, sold and used within the territory of the People's Republic of
China shall comply with the requirements of this standard. Export products can
be implemented in accordance with the contract.
1.5 If other laws and regulations have safety requirements for other aspects of
the equipment and protection system in explosive hazardous area AND the
owner has other safety protection requirements for the workers in the explosive
hazardous area, then the equipment and protection system in the explosive
hazardous area as well as the safety protection of the owner for the explosive
hazardous area worker shall also comply with the corresponding requirements.
The equipment and protection systems for explosive hazardous area and the
special requirements of the owner for safety protection for workers in explosive
hazardous areas shall be detailed in the corresponding specific standard, AND
be specified through corresponding demonstration, verification, and technical
data supplementation.
1.6 This standard is tentatively not applicable to the following equipment and
protection systems, as well as the safety protection of workers in this
environment. the explosion hazard of equipment and protection system is
entirely caused by explosive materials or unstable chemicals; medical
equipment for medical environment; equipment, protection systems and
components in places where an explosion is caused by the reaction of a
substance with other oxidants in the atmosphere than oxygen, or where an
explosion is caused by other hazardous reactions or non-atmospheric

3 Terms and definitions
The terms and definitions as defined in GB/T 2900.35 and GB 3836.1 as well
as the following terms and definitions apply to this document.
Explosive atmospheres
Equipment for explosive atmospheres is classified as category I, category II
and category III in accordance with the applicable explosive atmosphere.
Category I equipment. Equipment for coal mine gas and/or combustible coal
Category II equipment. Equipment used in other explosive gas atmospheres
than coal mine gas;
Category III equipment. Equipment used in combustible dust atmospheres
other than coal mines.
Note 1. Category II and III equipment can be further subdivided in
accordance with the type or characteristics of the explosive atmospheres
they are intended to use.
Note 2. Equipment and protective systems can be designed for use in a
particular explosive atmosphere. In this case, it shall be marked accordingly.
3.6.2 Equipment protection level; EPL
The level of protection provided for the equipment in accordance with the
possibility of the equipment becoming a source of ignition and the different
characteristics possessed by the explosive atmosphere, the explosive dust
environment and the explosive atmosphere of the coal mine methane.
Note. The determination of the equipment protection level (EPL) as required
is as shown in Chapter 8.
Intended use
Depending on the category and grade of equipment, all equipment, the
protective system and the equipment specified in 1.3 required for the safe
operation of the equipment, protective system, and component provided by
the manufacturer.
Working equipment
Any instrument, equipment, tool, or device used in the work.
Use of working equipment
7.1.5 The equipment is able to withstand the expected dangerous physical and
chemical effects such as static or dynamic loads, liquids or gases, heat or
unusual weather, without causing any danger.
7.1.6 When manufacturing equipment, it is only allowed to use the materials
which can withstand the physical and chemical impacts such as aging,
corrosion, and radiation occurred in the course of intended use.
7.1.7 The design of the equipment used in explosive hazardous areas shall be
ergonomically constructed to reduce labor intensity and ease of use, and to be
able to prevent hazards.
7.2 Electrical hazard protection
7.2.1 It may use the insulation protection technology, direct contact protection
technology, indirect contact protection technology, etc., to provide adequate
protection against the danger caused by the direct effect of electrical energy
when the electrical equipment is for intended use. In order to ensure normal
operation and to prevent the danger caused by the direct effect of current, the
electrical equipment shall have enough insulation resistance, dielectric strength,
heat resistance, moisture resistance, antifouling, flame retardancy, tracking
resistance and other electrical insulation performance.
7.2.2 When basic insulation is damaged and there is a risk of fault contact
voltage, additional insulation or reinforced insulation shall be evaluated
7.2.3 Electrical equipment shall ensure that when the basic insulation fails or
an arc occurs, the fault contact voltage does not cause harm.
Electrical equipment shall have ground protection (if necessary, equipotential
bonding), or double insulation structure, or strengthen insulation, and other
protective measures, unless otherwise there is special safety requirement.
All parts that may be hazardous due to operating voltage, fault current, leakage
current or the like shall comply with the relevant standards and provide
adequate clearances and creepage distances.
7.2.4 It shall take appropriate measures to prevent the danger caused by the
electrical or non-electrical indirect effects of high temperature, arc, radiation,
gas, noise, vibration and so ...
