Foreword
GB/T 2546 Plastics – Polypropylene (PP) Moulding and Extrusion Materials can be
divided into the following two parts:
--- Part 1: Designation System and Basis for Specifications;
--- Part 2: Preparation of Test Specimens and Determination of Properties.
This Part belongs to Part 1 of GB/T 2546.
This Part modifies and uses ISO 1873-1:1995 Plastics – Polypropylene (PP) Moulding
and Extrusion Materials – Part 1: Designation System and Basis for Specifications
(English Version). The structure of this Part is fully the same as ISO 1873-1:1995.
Compared with ISO 1873-1:1995, this Part has the major technical differences as
follows:
--- In 1.2, change the “impact strength” into “notched/un-notched Charpy impact
strength”, so that make the standard consistent;
--- In Clause 2 Normative References, change “ISO 1133:1991” into “GB/T 3682-
2000 (idt ISO 1133:1997)”;
--- In Clause 3 Designation Mode, omit the optional data block: “thermoplastic” and
“international standard number”;
--- In 3.3.1, change “the possible values of tensile elastic modulus are divided into
6 grades according to their ranges, and each grade is coded with 2-figure; the
specific regulations are shown in Table 3” into “tensile elastic modulus is coded
by 3-figure basing on the nominal values”. The Table 3 contents are modified
accordingly;
--- In 3.3.2, change “the possible values of notched/un-notched Charpy impact
strength are divided into 6 grades according to their ranges; each grade is coded
with 2-figure” into “notched/un-notched Charpy impact strength is coded by 2-
figure basing on the nominal values”. The Table 4 contents are modified
accordingly;
--- In 3.3.3, add MFR test condition P “temperature: 230°C, load: 5kg”; change “the
possible values of melt mass-flow rate (MFR) is divided into 11 grades; each
grade is coded with 3-figure; the specific regulations are shown in Table 3” into
“the melt mass-flow rate (MFR) is coded by one letter and 3-figure basing on the
nominal values”. The Table 5 contents are modified accordingly.
This Part replaced GB/T 2546-1988 Designation of Polypropylene and Propylene
Plastics - Polypropylene (PP) Moulding and Extrusion
Materials - Part 1: Designation System and Basis for
Specification
1 Scope
1.1 This Part of GB/T 2546 establishes a system of designation for polypropylene (PP)
thermoplastic material, which may be used as the basis for specifications.
1.2 The types of polypropylene thermoplastic materials are differentiated from each
other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory
properties, and on information about the intended application and/or method of
processing, important properties, additives, colorants, fillers and reinforcing materials.
a) tensile elastic modulus;
b) notched/un-notched Charpy impact strength;
c) melt mass-flow rate (MFR).
1.3 This Part is applicable to all propylene homopolymers and to copolymers of
propylene with a content of other 1-olefins of less than 50 % (m/m), as well as blends
of polymers containing at least 50 % (m/m) of aforementioned polymers.
This Part applies to materials ready for normal use in the form of powder, granules or
pellets and to materials unmodified or modified by colorants. additives, fillers, etc.
This Part does not apply to propylene-based rubber.
1.4 This Part is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give
necessarily the same performance. This Part does not provide engineering data,
performance data or data on processing conditions which may be required to specify
a material for a particular application and/or method of processing.
If such additional properties are required, they shall be determined in accordance with
the test methods specified in Clause 2 of this Standard, if suitable.
1.5 In order to specify a thermoplastic material for a particular application or to ensure
reproducible processing, additional requirements may be given in data block 5.

3 Designation and Specification System
The designation and specification system for thermoplastics is based on the following
standardized pattern:
Designation
Characteristic item block
Data block 1 Data block 2 Data block 3 Data block 4 Data block 5
The designation consists of 5 data blocks signalizing the characteristic item block as
follows:
--- Data block 1: Identification of the plastic by its symbol PP in accordance with
GB/T 1844.1 and information about the polymerization process or composition
of the polymer (see 3.1).
--- Data block 2: Position 1: Intended application or method of processing (see 3.2).
Positions 2 to 8: Important properties, additives and supplementary information
(see 3.2).
--- Data block 3: characteristic properties (see 3.3).
--- Data block 4: Fillers or reinforcing materials and their nominal content (see 3.4).
