Heat Pump Water Heater for Household and Similar
Application
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the terms and definitions, product classification, technical requirements,
test methods, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transportation and storage of heat pump
water heater for household and similar application (hereinafter referred to as heat pump water
heater).
This Standard is applicable to heat pump water heater for household and similar application
driven by electric motors, using vapor compression refrigeration cycle, and air or water as the
heat source, and for the purpose of providing hot water. Heat pump water heaters with other
heat sources or purposes may take this as a reference.
This Standard does not apply to industrial heat pump water heaters.

Auxiliary heat source refers to a heat source other than the heat pump used to heat the water in
the heat pump water heater, and can be used together with the heat pump or used separately for
heating.
NOTE: auxiliary heat sources include heat sources formed by heating using electric energy, gas
and solar energy, etc.
3.8 packaged heat pump water heater
Packaged heat pump water heater refers to a heat pump water heater with the main components,
such as: compressor, evaporator, condenser and water tank, in the same tank body.
3.9 split-type heat pump water heater
Split-type heat pump water heater refers to a heat pump water heater with the main components,
such as: compressor, evaporator, condenser and water tank, not in the same tank body.
3.10 water-loop heat pump water heater
Water-loop heat pump water heater refers to a heat pump water heater using water that circulates
through a common pipeline as the heat source.
3.11 ground-water heat pump water heater
Ground-water heat pump water heater refers to a heat pump water heater using water drawn
from wells, lakes, seas or rivers as the heat source.
3.12 ground-loop heat pump water heater
Ground-loop heat pump water heater refers to a heat pump water heater using water that
circulates in underground coils as the heat source.
3.13 inlet water temperature
T1
Inlet water temperature refers to the water temperature measured at the water inlet before the
instantaneous heat pump water heater starts heating;
After the circulating heat pump water heater and static heat pump water heater complete water
filling, the average temperature of water measured at the inlet and outlet of the water tank.
3.14 outlet water temperature
T2
Outlet water temperature refers to the water temperature measured at the water outlet of the
system when the instantaneous heat pump water heater is in stable heating;
Annual average heating capacity refers to the sum of the heat provided to the heated water
throughout the year when the heat pump water heater performs heating under specified working
conditions and specified conditions.
3.22 annual average heating input
AP
Annual average heating input refers to the sum of the electricity consumption provided to the
heated water throughout the year when the heat pump water heater performs heating under
specified working conditions and specified conditions.
3.23 annual performance factor
APF
Annual performance factor refers to the ratio of the sum of the heat provided to the heated water
by the heat pump water heater throughout the year to the sum of the electricity consumption
during the same period.
3.24 Other Terms
3.24.1 capacity of water storage tank
Capacity of water storage tank refers to the maximum capacity of a water storage tank that can
store hot water under specified conditions.
3.24.2 pressure-resistant water storage tank
Pressure-resistant water storage tank refers to a water storage tank with an air-tight tank body,
does not connect with the ambient air, and can withstand a certain pressure.
3.24.3 rated pressure of water
Rated pressure of water refers to the water pressure specified by the manufacturer for the heat
pump water heater.
4 Product Classification
4.1 Types of Classification
4.1.1 Classification by the mode of heat source:
a) air-source heat pump water heater;
b) water-source heat pump water heater;
4.1.2 Classification by the type of power source:
5.2.2 When the water inlet and outlet pipes of the heat pump water heater are directly installed
in the sub-water supply system, the water inlet and outlet pipes shall comply with the
requirements of relevant national standards.
5.2.3 The assembly of each component of the main unit of the heat pump water heater shall be
firm and reliable; the compressor shall have anti-vibration measures. When the heat pump water
heater is operating, there shall be no abnormal sound, and there shall be no mutual friction or
collision between the pipeline and the components. The components of the heat pump water
heater, for example, the electromagnetic reversing valve, shall have sensitive and reliable action.
5.2.4 The auxiliary electrical heating elements in the heat pump water heater shall be reliably
fixed or separately placed, so as to prevent damage during normal transportation and
maintenance. The pipe material of the auxiliary electrical heating elements shall have sufficient
anti-corrosion performance, and its anti-corrosion performance shall not be lower than the
0Cr18Ni9 stainless steel.
5.2.5 The heat pump water heater shall have measures to prevent freezing under the power
supply status.
5.2.6 For the heat pump water heaters declared by the manufacturer to be used in bathrooms,
the water-proof grade shall be at least IPX4.
5.3 Weather Resistance Requirements
After being subject to the test in accordance with 6.14, the heat pump water heater shall comply
with the following requirements:
a) The electroplated parts and fasteners shall receive anti-corrosion treatment; the
surface shall be smooth and fine, and uniform in color; there shall be no obvious
defects, such as: spots, pinholes, bubbles and coating peeling, etc.
b) The painted parts shall have a solid coating and a good appearance; there shall be no
obvious bubbles, flow marks, paint leaks, primer exposure, undue creases and other
damages on the surface; the coating peeling shall not be greater than Grade 2. After
the coating of the outdoor units is subject to the test in accordance with 6.14.4, the
gloss loss rate of the coating shall be less than 50%, there shall be no obvious
powdering or cracks on the surface, and the change in color difference shall be not
greater than Grade 2.
c) The surface of plastic parts shall be flat and smooth, uniform in color and anti-aging;
there shall be no defects like cracks, bubbles, obvious shrinkage holes and
deformation. The durability of engineering plastics used for the outdoor units shall
comply with the stipulations of JB/T 10359.
5.4 Air-tightness and Pressure-bearing Requirements
5.4.1 Air-tightness requirements for refrigeration system
Each part of the refrigeration system of the heat pump water heater shall be sealed. After being
subject to the test in accordance with the method of 6.2.1, there shall be no leakage of refrigerant.
5.4.2 Pressure-bearing requirements for water system
After being subject to the test in accordance with the method of 6.2.2, there shall be no water
leakage at each part of the water-side of the heat pump water heater, and there shall be no
permanent deformation that may affect safety.
NOTE: if the water tank of the heat pump water heater is equipped with a heat exchanger, then, the
water tank and the heat exchanger shall be tested in accordance with the pressure specified
in the relevant standards.
5.4.3 Strength requirements for the water tank
After being subject to the test in accordance with the method of 6.2.3, the water tank shall have
no obvious deformation, and there shall be no leakage at the welding and joint seals.
5.5 Performance Requirements for the Heat Pump Water Heater under Nominal
Conditions
5.5.1 Heat pump heating capacity
When carrying out the test in accordance with the method of 6.3, the measured heating capacity
of the heat pump shall not be less than 95% of the nominal value of the heat pump heating
capacity.
5.5.2 Heating water capacity
When carrying out the test in accordance with the method of 6.3, the measured heating water
capacity shall not be less than 95% of the nominal value of the heating water capacity.
5.5.3 Heat pump heating power input
When carrying out the test in accordance with the method of 6.4, the measured heat pump
heating power input shall not be greater than 110% of the nominal value of the heat pump
heating power input.
5.5.4 Coefficient of performance (COP)
In accordance with 6.3, calculate the coefficient of performance. The measured coefficient of
performance (COP) of the heat pump water heater under the nominal conditions shall not be
lower than the values specified in Table 3, and shall not be lower than 95% of the manufacturer’s
stated values.
6.2 Air-tightness and Pressure-bearing Tests of Heat Pump Water Heater
6.2.1 Air-tightness test for refrigeration system
The heat pump water heater is under the normal amount of refrigerant filling and placed in a
positive pressure chamber with an ambient temperature of 16 C ~ 35 C with power off; use a
leak detector with a sensitivity of 1 106 Pa m3/s to inspect it.
6.2.2 Pressure-bearing test for water system
Apply water pressure to the container and heat exchanger; increase the water pressure to the
following specified value at a rate of 0.13 MPa/s and maintain at this value for 5 min. The water
pressure is:
---for airtight containers, it is twice the allowable working overpressure;
---for open containers, it is 0.15 MPa.
6.2.3 Strength test for water storage tank
Before the test, for the pressurized water storage tank that has not been subjected to other tests,
carry out the leak detection under the rated pressure, and there shall be no leakage.
In a conventional method or similarly support the container component, connect the above-
mentioned water storage tank to the pulse pressure test instrument, and adjust the test
parameters of the pressure-applying instrument:
---pulsating pressure: inject water at the ambient temperature into the container; empty the
air in the container and alternately pressurize in accordance with the value between 15%
~ 100% 5% of the rated pressure value;
---frequency: 25 times/min ~ 45 times/min;
---number of cycles: 1 105.
6.3 Heat Pump Heating Capacity
6.3.1 General conditions of test
If there is no special requirement, the heat pump heating capacity test shall be carried out under
the following conditions:
a) The average temperature of water in the water tank at the end of the test shall reach
55 C 0.5 C;
b) The ambient wind velocity is not greater than 0.5 m/s;
c) For heat pump water heaters with a water tank, the water tank and the main engine
are placed at the same ambient temperature;
6.4 Heat Pump Heating Power Input
While testing the heating capacity of the heat pump, determine the heat pump heating power
input. For the circulating heat pump water heaters and the static heat pump water heaters, the
heat pump heating power input is the ratio of electricity consumption to heating time.
NOTE: the total heat pump heating power input is measured when the auxiliary electrical heating
is not working; for water heaters that require a water pump to normally operate, the actual
power consumption of the water pump must be included.
6.5 Maximum Operation
6.5.1 Instantaneous heat pump water heaters
At the rated frequency, respectively adjust the test voltage to 90% and 110% of the rated voltage.
Under the maximum operating conditions specified in Table 1 or Table 2, start the operation of
the heat pump water heater. After reaching a stability, continuously operate for 30 min, then,
stop for 3 min (during this period, the voltage rise shall not exceed 3%); start to operate for 30
min.
6.5.2 Circulating heat pump water heaters and static heat pump water heaters
At the rated frequency, respectively adjust the test voltage to 90% and 110% of the rated voltage.
Under the maximum operating conditions specified in Table 1 or Table 2, start the operation of
the heat pump water heater, until the outlet water temperature reaches the set value, then, stop
(during this period, the voltage rise shall not exceed 3%). At this moment, in accordance with
the flow rate equivalent to the heating water capacity or 2 L/min, whichever is greater, discharge
water; meanwhile, inject cold water at 29 C at the same flow rate, until the heat pump starts
again. Stop discharging and injecting water, and make the heat pump water heater continue to
operate to the set temperature, then, stop.
6.6 Automatic Defrosting
6.6.1 Instantaneous heat pump water heaters
At the rated voltage and frequency, in accordance with the automatic defrosting conditions
specified in Table 1, set the outlet water temperature of the heat pump water heater to 55 C
and continue the operation. After the first defrosting cycle is over, set the outlet water
temperature to the lowest set value and continue to operate for 3 h (start timing after the outlet
water temperature reaches the set value and stabilizes).
6.6.2 Circulating heat pump water heaters and static heat pump water heaters
At the rated voltage and frequency, in accordance with the automatic defrosting conditions
specified in Table 1, firstly, set the outlet water temperature to 55 C, operate, until the outlet
water temperature reaches the set temperature and there is at least one defrosting cycle. (If
defrosting does not occur, then, in accordance with the rated heating water capacity, discharge
water, and inject cold water at 9 C at an equal flow rate, until the heat pump starts again, then,
stop discharging and injecting water. Repeat the above operations, until the first defrosting is
over and the outlet water temperature reaches the set value.) Then, set the outlet water
temperature to the lowest value; in accordance with the above-mentioned method, discharge
and inject water, until the heat pump starts again. Start timing, and make the heat pump
continuously operate for 3 h (during this period, in accordance with the above-mentioned
method, repeatedly discharge and inject water).
NOTE: for appliances without their own circulating water pump, regulate their water flow to the
rated flow.
Different types of appliances are respectively tested in accordance with the following clauses:
a) Heat pump water heaters with a water tank in standard configuration: if the water tank
in standard configuration has a capacity range to choose from, the water tank with the
largest capacity shall be chosen for the test;
b) For heat pump water heaters without a water tank in standard configuration: connect
the external water distribution tank (it is required that the volume of the external
distribution water tank is the same as that of the water tank in the heating water
capacity test).
6.7 Minimum Operation
6.7.1 Minimum operation test for instantaneous heat pump water heaters
Under the minimum operating conditions specified in Table 1 or Table 2, make the heat pump
water heater operate, until the operating conditions are stable, then, operate for 4 h.
6.7.2 Minimum operation test for circulating heat pump water heaters
Connect the water tank in standard configuration of the heat pump water heater or the external
water distribution tank (it is required that the volume of the external distribution water tank is
the same as that of the water tank in the heating water capacity test); under the minimum
operating conditions specified in Table 1 or Table 2, start the operation, until the heat pump
water heater reaches the maximum set temperature, then, stop.
6.7.3 Minimum operation test for static heat pump water heaters
Connect the water tank (water tank of the maximum capacity) in standard configuration of the
heat pump water heater; under the minimum operating conditions specified in Table 1 or Table
2, start the operation, until the heat pump water heater reaches the maximum set temperature,
then, stop.
6.8 Low-temperature Operation with Hot Water
6.8.1 Low-temperature operation test for instantaneous heat pump water heaters
Under the low-temperature operating conditions specified in Table 1 or Table 2, make the heat
pump water heater operate, until the operating conditions are stable, then, operate for 4 h.
6.8.2 Low-temperature operation test for circulating heat pump water heaters
Connect the water tank in standard configuration of the heat pump water heater or the external
water distribution tank (it is required that the volume of the external distribution water tank is
the same as that of the water tank in the heating water capacity test); under the low-temperature
operating conditions specified in Table 1 or Table 2, start the operation, until the heat pump
water heater reaches the set temperature, then, stop.
6.8.3 Low-temperature operation test for static heat pump water heaters
Connect the water tank (water tank of the maximum capacity) in standard configuration of the
heat pump water heater; under the low-temperature operating conditions specified in Table 1 or
Table 2, start the operation, until the heat pump water heater reaches the set temperature, then,
stop.
6.9 Test under Variable Operating Conditions
When a certain condition in Table 1 or Table 2 is changed, the other conditions shall be tested
in accordance with the flow and temperature conditions of the nominal operating conditions to
determine the heating capacity and the corresponding power consumption. This test shall
include the corresponding operating temperature condition points in Table 1 or Table 2. Draw
the test results into curve graphs or tables, and each curve or table shall include the values of
four measurement points.
6.10 Hot Water Storage Performance
6.10.1 Test conditions
The test for the hot water storage performance shall be carried out under the following
conditions:
a) Ambient temperature is: 20 C 2 C;
b) Inlet water temperature is: 15 C 0.5 C;
c) Laboratory wind velocity during the determination does not exceed 0.5 m/s;
d) For products that can be equipped with external water tanks, all water tank
specifications shall be equipped for testing.
6.10.2 Hot water storage performance of water storage tank
6.10.2.1 Test method for insulation performance
After filling up the water tank of the heat pump water heater, make the outlet water temperature
6.10.2.3 Water storage tank capacity test
Through the downpipe, inject water into the water tank, until water comes out from the upper
water outlet, then, stop water injection; measure the mass of the water tank after the water
injection, subtract the mass of the waterless water tank before the water injection; divide the
result by the density of water at the measured temperature, expressed in L, accurate to 0.1 L.
The measured values shall comply with the requirements of 5.7.3.
NOTE: for water tanks with sewage outlets, when discharging water, discharge all the water from
the sewage outlet; for water tanks without sewage outlets, when discharging water,
discharge water as much as possible from the water outlet.
6.11 Noise Test
6.11.1 Measurement site
The measurement site shall be a full or semi-anechoic chamber on the reflection plane. The
difference between the noise of the heat pump water heater under test and the background noise
shall be above 10 dB(A).
6.11.2 Measuring instruments
The test instruments shall use a sound level meter of Type I or above specified in GB/T 3785.1-
2010, and other test instruments with comparable accuracy.
6.11.3 Installation conditions
The heat pump water heater shall be installed in accordance with the relevant technical
conditions, and both the outdoor unit and the water tank shall be placed on a 5 mm thick rubber
pad (with a shore hardness of 45).
For the packaged unit, place the heat pump water heater in the test site;
For the split-type unit, respectively place the water tank and the outdoor unit of the heat pump
water heater in two adjacent test sites. For the heat pump water heater outdoor unit without a
circulating water pump, the additionally equipped circulating water pump shall be placed
outside the test site.
6.11.4 Operating conditions
When operating at the rated voltage and rated frequency, the operating conditions on the heat
source side shall be close to the nominal heating conditions, with an allowable deviation of 5
C; the hot water temperature on the use side shall reach 55 C, with an allowable deviation of
5 C.
6.11.5 Measurement position
