Foreword
This Standard modified and adopted internal standard ISO 780.1997 Packaging –
Pictorial Marking for Handling of Goods; their major differences are as follows.
--- Added the specification dimension of 50mm basing on 3 specifications in the
international standards;
--- In 4.1 marking, added “when printing the markings, the outer edge line and
marking name shall be printed; Chinese name and outer edge line can be omitted
for the exported goods; when painting, the outer edge line and marking name
also can be omitted”;
--- Added the complete graphic for each marking.
This Standard replaced GB/T 191-2000 Packaging – Pictorial Marking for Handling of
Goods.
Compared with GB/T 191-2000, this Standard has the major changes as follows.
--- Canceled the paste position of the making on the package;
--- Added marking graphic column in the Table 1.
This Standard was proposed by and under the jurisdiction of National
Technical Committee for Standardization of Package.

Packaging – Pictorial Marking for Handling of Goods
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the name, graphic symbol, dimension, color and application
method of the pictorial marking for packaging and handling of goods (hereinafter
referred to as marking).
This Standard is applicable to the transportation and package of various goods.
2 Name and Graphic Symbol of Marking
The marking consists of graphic symbol, name and outer edge line; totally 17 types,
see Table 1.
3 Marking Dimension and Color
3.1 Marking dimension
The outer edge of the marking is rectangle; thereof the outer edge of graphic symbol
is a square with 4 types of dimensions, which can refer to Table 2. If the package
dimension is too large or too small, it can be scale up or down.

3.2 Marking color
The marking color is generally black.
If the package color makes the marking unclear, then appropriate contrast color shall
be used on the printing surface; the black marking shall use white as the background
color.
If necessary, the marking can also use other colors; unless otherwise is specified, it
shall avoid using the red, orange or yellow, so that avoid confusing with the marking of
dangerous goods.
4 Marking Application Method
4.1 Marking use
The printing, pasting, hanging, nail attaching, spraying and the like methods can be
used directly. When printing marking, both outer edge line and marking name shall be
printed; the Chinese marking name and outer edge line can be omitted for the exported
goods; when spraying, the outer edge line and making name also can be omitted.
4.2 Marking quantity and position
4.2.1 The number of the same markings used on 1 package shall be determined
according to the package dimension and shape.
4.2.2 The marking shall be labelled on the prominent position; the use the following
markings shall comply with the following provisions.

a) The Marking 1 “fragile goods” shall be labelled on the upper left corner on all
surfaces and sides of the package (see the instructions and examples of Marking
1 in Table 1);
b) The Marking 3 “up” shall be labelled on the same positions as the Marking 1 [see
example a) of Marking 3 in Table 1]. When Marking 1 and Marking 3 are used at
the same time, the Marking 3 shall be closer to the corner of the package [see
example b) of Marking 3 in Table 1];
c) The Marking 7 “center of gravity” shall be labelled as much as possible on the
center of gravity of the 6 surfaces on the package; otherwise it shall be labelled
on at least 2 sides and 2 end-faces of the package (see the instructions and
examples of Marking 7 in Table 1);
d) The Marking 11 “clip here” can only be used on the greppable package; the
marking position shall be on the 2 opposite surfaces of the greppable position;
the marking shall be ensured within the view of the operator;
e) The Marking 16 “lift here” shall be at least labelled on 2 opposite surfaces of the
package (see instructions and examples of Marking 16 in Table 1).
