Foreword
Wood charcoal is used in crystal silicon, activated carbon, non-ferrous smelting, alloy, and
other industries. This Standard was formulated in order to promote enterprise technical
level and management level.
The test conditions and test procedures specified in the Standard are used to ensure the
accuracy and comparability of test results for each technical indicator of wood charcoal.
This Standard was proposed by the former Ministry of Forestry of the People’s Republic of
China.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of Institute of Chemical Industry of forest
Product, Chinese Academy of Forestry.
Drafting organizations of this Standard. Institute of Chemical Industry of forest Product,
Chinese Academy of Forestry.
The main drafters of this Standard. Deng Xianlun, Gong Jianping, and Chen Junzhen.
National Standard of the People’s Republic of China
Wood charcoal and test method of wood charcoal
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the wood charcoal’s classification, requirements, test methods,
inspection regulations and sign, packing, transportation, and storage methods.
This Standard applies to wood charcoal that is burned by using wood as the raw material.
Wood charcoal is used in crystal silicon, carbon disulfide, activated carbon, non-ferrous
smelting, alloy, and other industries.
2 Definition
The following definitions are used in this Standard.
2.1 Hard broadleaved charcoal
It refers to the wood charcoal that is burned from the mixed woods of broadleaved wood
and birch wood.
2.2 Broadleaved charcoal
It refers to the wood charcoal that is burned from the mixed woods of hard broadleaf and
soft broadleaf.
2.3 Coniferous charcoal
It refers to the wood charcoal that is burned from pine or coniferous wood.
3 Technical requirements
3.1 Appearance. Black, irregular lump, rod-like solid.
3.2 Wood charcoal quality shall meet the requirements of Table 1.

Where. M — The amount of particles less than 10mm, in unit of %;
m4 — The mass of the particles less than 10mm, in unit of kg;
mc — Sample’s mass before sieving, in unit of kg.
4.3.5 Permissible errors
The errors of the two parallel measurement results shall not be greater than 1%.
4.4 Measurement of charcoal head and impurity content
4.4.1 Test Procedures
Carefully pick out the charcoal heads and impurities from the above-sieve substance (i.e.,
greater than 10mm) that has been measured in 2.3.4 of this Standard. Weigh it (accurate
to 0.1kg).
4.4.2 The charcoal head and impurity content are calculated according to Formula (6).

5 Inspection rules
5.1 Charcoal shall be supplied by batch. Each batch of charcoal refers to the same
charcoal species and same quality index. And it shall be inspected by the Technical
Supervision Department of manufacturing organization or purchasing organization. It shall
be attached with technical test report with certain format.
5.2 Sampling rules
5.2.1 In bulk transportation, take 3-5% of the total quantity, equally and at 3 times - the
beginning, middle and last stages of loading and unloading respectively. Mix evenly after
collecting. Then take the reduced overall-sample according to quartering method. When
packaging and transporting, take 3 points from the 2 horizontal planes of 1/4 or 3/4 of
embankment height respectively. Average the whole sampling (sampling point is at least
0.5m from the surface) according to 3% - 5% of the total quantity of packages. After
collection, take the reduced overall-sample according to quartering method.
5.2.2 The overall-sample is divided into 2 samples. Each sample’s mass shall not be less
than 100kg. The first sample is used for inspection. The second overall-sample is reserved
for re-inspection, if the analysis result is unqualified.
5.2.3 When the overall-sample is used for inspection, mix evenly. It is divided into 4
samples. One for analysis sample; and the other 3 samples are used for measuring the
granularity, and charcoal heads and impurities. The charcoal for analysis sample shall be
immediately divided equally. It shall be loaded in 3 clean and dry glass bottles with stopper,
and be labelled immediately. Label content includes. sample name and sample number,
manufacturing organization, charcoal type, batch number, grade, sampling date, and
sampling person’s name.
Then one of the bottles is used for total moisture determination; one bottle is used for
analysis test; and the other one is kept for two months for re-inspection and arbitration
analysis.
5.3 Decision rules
5.3.1 When the inspection result is not in accordance with the requirements of 3.2, it shall
immediately use the parallel overall-sample for re-inspection. When the re-inspection
result is still not in accordance with the requirements of 3.2, the whole batch of the
charcoal is unqualified.
5.3.2 The purchasing organization has the right to carry out the acceptance test for the
industrial charcoal according to the technical conditions, inspection methods, and
inspection rules specified by this Standard.
5.3.3 If the Supplier and Purchaser have objections on the inspection result and need
arbitration, both parties can select the arbitration agency by agreement. The arbitration
test shall be conducted in accordance with the inspection rules and inspection methods
specified by this Standard.
6 Mark, packaging, transportation and storage
6.1 Product packaging shall contain a firm mark, which includes. Name or code of
manufacturing organization, product name, product grade, batch number, net weight, and
standard number.
6.2 Industrial charcoal can be packaged quantitatively with straw bags, jute bags or plastic
bags. The same batch of charcoal shall be with the same specification. And the charcoal
net weight of each package shall be the same.
6.3 The rain, snow, and ice etc. shall be avoided in the transportation. The breakage shall
be avoided in the loading and unloading process.
6.4 Charcoal shall be stored in the rain-proof shelters or ventilated warehouse. It cannot
get contact with strong oxidant. For the sake of safety, the newly-made wood charcoal
shall be packaged, stacked and shipped after spreading out for three days.
