Foreword
This Standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Standard replaces GB/T 12137-2002, Methods for Leakage Test of Gas Cylinders.
Compared with GB 12137-2002, the major changes of this Standard are as follows.
-- it adds “normative references” (see Article 2);
-- it modifies the specifications of design, manufacture, installation and use of
pressure vessels and filling tubes (see 4.1.4, 4.1.6; 3.1.4, 3.1.6 of edition 2002);
-- it adds the requirement that protective devices shall conform to relevant
specifications (see 4.4);
-- it adds the requirements for gas cylinders to be tested (see Article 5);
-- it adds the options of test media and methods (see 6.1);
-- it adds the work after the completion of test (see 6.5);
-- it adds the requirements for test records (see Article 7).
This Standard was proposed by and shall be under the jurisdiction of the National
Standardization Technical Committee on Gas Cylinders (SAC/TC 31).
The drafting organizations of this Standard. Shanghai Special Equipment Supervision
and Inspection Technology Institute, Ningbo MingXin Chemical Machinery Co., Ltd.,
Shanghai Tiemao Pressure Vessels (Group) Co., Ltd.
The main drafters of this Standard. Yin Airong, Ye Qing, Chen Weiming.
The previous editions of the standard replaced by this Standard are as follows.

Methods of Leakage Test of Gas Cylinders
1 Application Scope
This Standard specifies the requirements for test apparatus and test methods for
leakage test of gas cylinders.
This Standard applies to leakage test of gas cylinders when water-immersion method
or soap bubble method is used.
2 Normative References
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this
document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references,
the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
GB/T 13005, Terminology of Gas Cylinders
GB/T 16163, Classification of Gases Filled in Cylinder
TSG R0004, Supervision Regulation on Safety Technology for Stationary
Pressure Vessel
3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions and those
defined in GB/T 13005 apply.
3.1 Water-immersion test
The test method in which tested gas cylinders filled with a gas of specified pressure
are immersed in a water tank to check their air-tightness.
4 Test Apparatus
4.1 Gas-filling apparatus
4.1.1 The air source pressure shall be greater than 1.1 times of the pressure for the
leakage test of gas cylinders.
4.1.7 The outlets of gas pressurization equipment and gas-filling pipe of gas
compressors, gas storage tanks and other apparatus shall be provided with pressure
gauge. The accuracy of gas pressurization equipment pressure gauges of gas
compressors, gas storage tanks and other apparatus is not lower than grade 2.5; the
connection pipe of gas-filling system and tested gas cylinders shall be provided with
pressure gauge for calibration and pressure gauge for working; pressure gauge for
calibration shall be used to calibrate pressure gauge for working before starting work
each day. The accuracy of pressure gauge is not lower than grade 1.6; the measuring
range is 1.5 times ~ 3.0 times of the test pressure for gas cylinders. The verification
cycle of pressure gauge for calibration is 6 months.
4.2 Test water tank
The test water tank for water-immersion leakage test shall be as specified as follows.
4.3 Inspection liquids
4.3.1 Inspection liquids are used in soap bubble leakage test.
4.4 Safety requirements
4.4.1 The leakage test apparatus shall be provided with reliable safety protection
facilities, which shall be confirmed and approved by the technical director or safety
production director.
5 Requirements for Tested Gas Cylinders
5.1 Before the leakage test of gas cylinders, carry out pressure-tight test first and
then leakage test after passing the pressure-tight test.
5.2 During the periodic inspection of gas cylinders containing combustible gases, the
volume content of combustible gases in gas cylinders shall be less than 0.4%
(excluding test media of filled gases); leakage test can only be carried out after the
requirement is satisfied.
6 Test Methods and Evaluation Criteria
6.1 Options of test media and methods
6.1.1 The leakage test media of the manufacturer of gas cylinders shall be as
specified in 4.1.2; priority shall be given to water-immersion method for leakage test.
6.1.2 The leakage test media and methods for the periodic inspection agency of gas
cylinders are as follows.
6.2 Test conditions
6.2.1 The environmental temperature for the leakage test of gas cylinders shall be
greater than 0°C.
6.2.2 In accordance with the test requirements of different gas cylinders, fill tested
gas cylinders to the pressure for leakage test at a constant, gentle speed.
6.3 Test requirements
6.3.1 Water-immersion method
The requirements for water-immersion test are as follows.
6.4 Evaluation criteria
Under any of the following circumstances, the leakage test of tested gas cylinders is
decided to be a fail.
6.5 Work after test
6.5.1 After the completion of test, release gases gently; excess pressure may be
reserved in cylinders.
7 Requirements for Test Records
Test records shall be taken for the leakage test of gas cylinders; as a minimum, the
records shall include. test gas cylinder number, valve type, test date, test
environmental temperature, test medium, test pressure, dwell time, test gas cylinder
abnormal occurrences, tester signature and so on.
