1 Scope
This document specifies the division and range of grain dust explosion hazardous areas in grain
processing, storage and transportation systems, process system and equipment requirements,
electrical requirements, requirements for buildings and structures, requirements for dust control,
requirements for dust cleaning, requirements for pneumatic conveying, requirements for
explosion control measures and requirements for operation safety management, and describes
the corresponding verification methods.
This document applies to the design, operation and safety management of the grain processing,
storage and transportation systems involving combustible dust explosion hazards.

3 Terms and Definitions
The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 15604, and the following are applicable to this
document.
3.1 grain
A generic term for agricultural products for human consumption.
3.2 grain processing
The process of producing raw grains into finished or semi-finished grains through specific
processes.
3.3 grain storage and transportation
Through grain circulation facilities and equipment, grains are transported and stored in
accordance with specific processes, modes and routes.
3.4 source of dust release
A place or position that can release combustible dust into the atmosphere.
3.5 explosive dust atmosphere
Under atmospheric conditions, after a mixture of combustible dust and gaseous oxidant (mainly
air) is ignited, an environment where combustion can propagate on its own.
3.6 protection for grain dust explosion
Technologies and measures to prevent grain dust combustion and explosion, and reduce losses
when dust combustion and explosion occur.
4 Division and range of Grain Dust Explosion Hazardous Areas
4.1 Dust explosion hazardous areas in grain processing, storage and transportation systems shall
be divided into Zone 20, Zone 21 and Zone 22 in accordance with the frequency of occurrence
and duration of grain dust explosive atmosphere.
4.2 The zone division and range of grain dust explosion hazardous areas shall be determined
based on the process, properties of supplies, location of sources of grain dust release, amount
and possibility of dust release, explosion conditions and dust removal by ventilation, site
structure and layout, etc. An example of zone division is shown in Appendix A.
4.4 During the entire duration of the operation process, enterprises shall keep the documents on
the zone division and description and regularly conduct dynamic assessments of the process’s
hazards and zone division.
5 Process System and Equipment Requirements
5.1 Process Design
5.1.1 The design of grain processing, storage and transportation systems shall follow the
principle of overall fortification. The design documents shall explain the division and range of
grain dust explosion hazardous areas, as well as the measures for protection for grain dust
explosion taken in terms of building structure, process system and equipment, dust control and
electrical aspects.
5.1.4 The process design shall select appropriate processes and equipment in accordance with
the following requirements to reduce the generation of explosive dust atmosphere.
5.1.5 The process design and equipment shall be selected based on the following requirements
to reduce the risk of the existence of non-electrical ignition sources in explosive dust
atmosphere.
5.1.6 At the following locations in the grain conveying and processing process, magnetic
separation or other devices for removing magnetic metal debris shall be installed.
5.2 Mechanical Equipment
5.2.1 General requirements
5.2.1.1 Explosion-proof measures shall be taken for mechanical equipment used in grain dust
explosion hazardous areas.
5.2.2 Conveying equipment
5.2.2.1 Bucket elevators shall meet the following requirements.
5.2.2.2 The spiral shall not be scratched, collided or stuck.
5.2.2.3 The scraper conveyors shall meet the following requirements.
5.2.2.4 Roller belt conveyors and air cushion belt conveyors shall meet the following
requirements.
5.2.3 Measurement equipment
5.2.5 Processing equipment
5.2.5.1 When grain enters high-speed rotating equipment for grinding, crushing, milling,
shelling and other processing, magnetic separation equipment for removing metal impurities
and cleaning equipment for removing inorganic impurities and other impurities shall be
installed in front of the equipment.
5.3 Grain Drying System
5.3.1 The grain drying system shall take appropriate fire prevention and dust explosion
protection measures based on its functions and structural characteristics.
5.3.2 The dryer shall be made of non-combustible materials, and its insulation materials shall
be flame retardant.
5.3.3 The inner surface of the dryer shall be smooth and shall not have any structures, such as.
lug bosses or upper grooves that may accumulate dust and supplies.
5.3.4 The exhaust port, feeding inlet and discharge outlet of the dryer shall be convenient for
cleaning, maintenance and the use of fire extinguishing equipment.
5.3.5 All joints and inspection doors of the dryer shall be tightly sealed to prevent dust leakage.
5.3.6 When the dryer recycles the waste gas, the grain dust in the waste gas shall be filtered out.
5.3.7 The dryer shall be equipped with monitoring devices for hot air temperature and grain
temperature, etc., and be able to implement automatic alarm for over-temperature.
5.3.8 The fire and heat sources of the grain drying system shall be isolated from the operation
area and storage area.
5.3.9 The heat exchanger shall not leak fire. Direct-fired hot air supply systems shall have
measures to prevent sparks from entering the dryer.
6 Electrical requirements
6.1 General Requirements
6.1.1 The design of electrical systems in grain dust explosion hazardous areas shall comply with
the requirements of GB 50058.
6.1.2 The production operations of grain processing, storage and transportation systems shall
be equipped with electrical interlocks that meet the process operation requirements and ensure
safe production, so as to ensure the safety of production operations in the event of a fault.
Electrical interlocking shall include one or more of the following.
6.1.3 Electrical circuits and equipment used in or passing through hazardous areas shall be
equipped with short-circuit and grounding protection, and electrical equipment that may be
overloaded shall also be equipped with overload protection.
6.1.4 On-site switch buttons in Zone 21 and Zone 22 that are only used during maintenance,
installation and commissioning may be non-dust explosion-proof products, but they shall be
protected by a sturdy dustproof casing.
6.2 Selection of Electrical Equipment
6.2.1 In grain dust explosion hazardous areas, electrical equipment shall be selected in
accordance with the division of explosion hazardous areas and the characteristics of grain dust.
The selection of electrical equipment shall comply with the requirements of GB 50058.The
selection of explosion-proof type and protection level is shown in Appendix B.
6.3 Electrical Circuits
6.3.1 The selection of cables and wires and the laying of electrical circuits shall comply with
the requirements of GB 50058.
6.4 Lightning Protection, Anti-static and Grounding
6.4.1 The lightning protection and grounding design for grain dust explosion hazardous areas
shall comply with the provisions of GB 50057.
6.4.2 The working grounding, protective grounding, lightning protection grounding and anti-
static grounding devices of electrical engineering may be set up together, and the grounding
resistance value of the dedicated electrostatic grounding body shall be less than 100 Ω.
7 Architecture and Structure
7.1 General Requirements
7.1.1 The load-bearing structure of multi-storied factory buildings where there is a risk of grain
dust explosion shall be reinforced concrete or steel frame structure.
7.1.2 The fire protection design of buildings shall comply with the provisions of GB 50016 and
GB 55037.
7.1.5 When there is a source of dust release within 10 m around the control room or electricity
distribution room, dust prevention measures shall be taken for doors, windows and holes, and
ventilation devices shall be equipped with dust filtering devices.
7.1.6 Offices, lounges and meeting rooms shall not be set up inside, above or in the explosion
venting areas of grain dust explosion hazardous areas.
7.1.7 When constructing a new silos group consisting of multiple silos, each silo shall be
independent and airtight, without any holes connecting them.
7.2 Ground
7.2.1 The ground of the grain dust explosion hazardous areas shall be flat, smooth, and easy to clean.
7.2.2 When using insulating materials as the overall surface layer, anti-static measures shall be taken.
7.3 Door
8 Requirements for Dust Control
8.1 Ventilation
8.1.1 The production area shall use natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation or increase
humidity to reduce the amount of suspended dust in the air.
8.2 Dust Removal System
8.2.1 The dust removal system shall be airtight and designed in accordance with the negative
pressure principle. If a positive pressure design is adopted, there shall be measures, for example,
spark prevention or spark detection and elimination, to prevent ignition sources.
8.2.2 The number, location, air volume of dust collection points, and the form and structure of
dust removal air nets shall be determined based on the configuration and process requirements
of each operating equipment in the grain processing, storage and transportation systems.
8.2.3 Different buildings (structures) and different fire compartments shall not share a dust
removal system. If a dust removal system must be shared due to process, it shall comply with
one of the following requirements.
8.2.4 The dust removal system shall be set up in accordance with the following requirements.
8.2.5 The setting of exhaust inlets shall meet the following requirements to effectively control
and collect dust.
8.2.6 The dust removal air nets shall have no loop wind direction, with smooth transition and
no impact on process operation, and be convenient for maintenance.
8.2.7 The setting of air ducts shall meet the following requirements.
8.2.8 Each air duct branch of the dust removal air nets shall be equipped with a regulating valve
to adjust the air volume and balance the system pressure.
8.2.9 Explosion-proof measures shall be taken to prevent dust explosions from propagating and
diffusing between the dust removal system, and equipment and stock bins. When a dust removal
system is equipped with multiple exhaust inlets in multiple grain (feeding) silos, then, each
exhaust inlet shall be respectively equipped with a stop valve (shut-off valve).
8.2.10 The layout of the dust collectors shall comply with the following principles.
8.2.11 The dust collectors shall meet the following requirements.
8.3 Dust Collection
8.3.1 Enterprises shall select appropriate dust recovery, and treatment measures and methods
based on the nature of the project and dust characteristics.
8.3.2 The dust collection device shall be sealed and made of anti-static non-combustible
materials.
8.3.3 Dust bins (rooms) and waste bins shall be well sealed.
9 Requirements for Accumulated Dust Cleaning
9.1 Accumulated dust shall be regularly cleaned and in a standardized manner, including dust
attached to the ground, walls, equipment, cable trays, pipelines, beams and structural parts,
suspended ceilings and other hidden surfaces, especially accumulated dust in rotating and heat-
generating parts, etc.
9.2 Supplies leaking from or blocked in equipment and chutes shall be promptly cleaned up.
9.3 When cleaning accumulated dust, cleaning tools that do not generate sparks shall be used
and re-entrainment of dust shall not be generated.
9.4 The collected dust shall be separated from metallic impurities before being returned to the
stock bins or grain flow.
