Foreword

This Standard equivalently adopted ISO 6320.2000 Animal and Vegetable Fats and Oils – Determination of Refractive Index (English version). This Standard replaced GB/T 5527-1985 Inspection of Vegetable Oils - Methods for Determination of Refractive Index. For ease of use, this Standard has made the following editorial changes to ISO 6320.2000. --- Delete the Foreword of the international standard; --- Change “this International Standard” to “this Standard”; --- Replace the comma "," as the decimal point in the original text with a decimal point "."; --- Number the relevant formulas; --- Replace ISO 661.1989 in the original international standard with GB/T 15687; --- In 9.2, the serial number has been added according to the measurement order to make the measurement procedures clearer. The main technical differences between this Standard and GB/T 5527-1985 are as follows. --- Add normative references; --- Add terms, definitions and principles; --- Add sampling and sample preparation; --- Add precision requirements and test reports. 1 Scope

This Standard specifies a method for the determination of the refractive index of animal and vegetable fats and oils.

2 Normative Reference

The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through reference in this Standard. For dated references, the subsequent amendments (excluding corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this Standard, however, parties who reach an agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable. 3 Terms and Definitions

For the purposes of this Standard, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 Refractive index (of a medium) Ratio of the velocity of light of a definite wavelength in a vacuum to its velocity in the medium. NOTE 1.In practice, the velocity of light in air is used in place of that in a vacuum and, unless otherwise specified, the selected wavelength is the mean wavelength of the sodium D lines (589.6 nm). NOTE 2.The refractive index of a given substance varies with the wavelength of the incident light and with temperature. The notation used n’D, where t is the temperature in degrees Celsius.

4 Principle

By means of a suitable refractometer, the refractive index of a liquid sample is measured at a The refractive index shall be determined on dried and filtered fats and oils. If it is required to check whether the repeatability requirement (11.2) is met, carry out two single determinations in accordance with 9.1 and 9.2. 9.1 Calibration of the instrument Verify the calibration of the refractometer (6.1) by measuring the refractive index of the glass plate (6.3) in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, or by measuring the refractive index of the ethyl laurate (5.1). 9.2 Determination Measure the refractive index of the test sample at one of the following temperatures. a) 20°C for fats and oils that are completely liquid at this temperature; b) 40°C for fats and oils that are completely melted at this temperature but not at 20°C; c) 50°C for fats and oils that are completely melted at this temperature but not at 40°C; d) 60°C for fats and oils that are completely melted at this temperature but not at 50°C; e) 80°C or above for other fats and oils, for example completely hardened fats or waxes. 9.2.1 Maintain the temperature of the prism of the refractometer at the required constant value by circulating through the instrument water from the water bath (6.4). 9.2.2 Monitor the temperature of the water issuing from the refractometer using a suitable precision thermometer. Immediately before the measurement, lower the movable part of the prism to a horizontal position. Wipe the surface of the prism with a soft cloth and then with a piece of cotton wool moistened with a few drops of the solvent (5.2). Allow it to dry. 9.2.3 Carry out the measurement according to the operating instructions for the instrument being used. Read the refractive index to the nearest 0.000 1 as an absolute value, and record the temperature of the prism of the instrument. 9.2.4 Immediately after the measurement, wipe the surface of the prism with a soft cloth and then with a piece of cotton wool moistened with a few drops of the solvent (5.2).
