Any of the three methods may be used, the choice depending on the character of the fabric. However, in case of dispute method A is recommended. This standard is applicable to the determination of number of threads per unit length in various woven fabrics. Method A. Dissection of fabric, suitable for all fabrics, in particular, complicated weaves. Method B. Counting glass, suitable for fabrics with more than 50 threads per centimetre. Method C. Traversing thread counter, suitable for all woven fabrics. Note. Three methods using parallel line gratings, tapered line gratings and optoelectronic scanning density meter for the determination of number of threads per unit length in woven fabrics have been given in Annex A (Informative) for information. These methods have low measurement accuracy and limitation but can be used to give rapid and rough estimates.2 Normative ReferencesGB 6529 Textiles - Standard Atmospheres for Conditioning and Testing3 Definitions3.1 Number of threads per unit length. warp number and weft number per unit length in woven fabrics under no wrinkle or tension, generally expressed with root/10cm. 3.2 Number of threads in warp direction. number of warp threads per unit length in fabric weft direction.4 PrincipleAny of the following three methods may be used, the choice depending on the character of the fabric. 4.1 Method A. dissect the fabric test pieces with specified dimension, count the number of threads, and convert to the number of threads of 10cm length. 4.2 Method B. Determine the number of threads visible within the aperture of a counting glass, and convert to the number of threads within 10cm length.5 Minimum Measuring Distance5.1 For the method A, take test pieces containing at least 100 threads. 5.2 For narrow fabrics having a width of 10cm or less, count all warp threads including the selvedge ends and express the result as threads per full width.6 Conditioning and Testing AtmosphereThe atmospheres for conditioning and testing shall adopt the standard atmosphere specified in GB 6529, and arbitration test shall adopt Grade 2 standard atmosphere. Routine inspection may be carried out in general atmosphere.7 Test SpecimenThe specimens shall be flat and smooth and free from wrinkle and obvious skew.8 Method A - Dissection of Fabric8.1 Apparatus 8.2 Procedure 8.2.1 Take test specimens slightly larger than the minimum measuring distance at proper position of the specimen after conditioning. 8.2.2 Remove partial thread from the specimen edge, and measure with a steel ruler to make the specimen reach the specified minimum measuring distance 2cm, with an allowable tolerance of 0.5 thread.9 Method B - Counting Glass9.1 Apparatus 9.1.1 Counting glass, the aperture width of which shall be 2±0.005cm or 3±0.005cm at all places. The thickness at the edges of the aperture shall not exceed 0.1cm. 9.2 Procedure 9.2.1 Lay the fabric flat and place the counting glass on the fabric, and select a thread to make it parallel to one of the edges of the aperture of the counting glass, and thereby count the number of threads within the aperture one by one.10 Method C - Traversing Thread Counter10.1 Apparatus 10.1.1 Traversing thread counter, incorporating a low-power microscope, of X5 to X20, mounted so that it can be traversed by means of a screw over a graduated base to meet the minimum measuring distance requirements of Chapter 5.Types with an index line in the microscope or a pointer traversing with and visible through the microscope are equally suitable. 10.2 Procedure Lay the fabric flat and place the thread counter upon it in such a way that when the screw is turned the graduated scale of the thread counter is parallel to the thread of another system, depending on which set of threads is being counted. Count the number of threads within the specified measuring distance.11 Calculation and Expression of Results11.1 Convert the measured number of threads within a certain length to the number of threads within 10cm length. 11.2 Respectively calculate the mean of the number of threads in warp and weft directions, accurate to 0.1 root/10cm. ......Source: Above contents are excerpted from the full-copy PDF -- translated/reviewed by: www.ChineseStandard.net / Wayne Zheng et al.
